HID Global will share essential, fundamental principles that should be inherent in any solution for enabling mobile driver licenses and other government IDs
HID will discuss critical ID program concerns for provisioning mobile driver licenses on smartphones at the eID conference

HID Global®, a worldwide leader in secure identity solutions, will be discussing critical ID program concerns for provisioning mobile driver licences onto citizens’ smartphones at the eID Conference (Sept 28 -29) in Washington D.C.

The company will highlight important principles that will drive policy discussion and development so that these mobile driver licenses and other mobile government identities will meet the needs of users, issuing agencies, law enforcement, and other stakeholders who rely on secure IDs for a wide range of purposes.

“Smartphones have empowered consumers to do so many things, from gaining secure access into their offices and hotel rooms, making retail purchases and displaying their airline boarding passes, to presenting tickets for events and entering their homes,” said Rob Haslam, Vice President, Government ID Solutions with HID Global. “For the individual, the smartphone is becoming a single all-purpose tool, and many want the option to use the smartphone instead of carrying a physical driver’s license or identification card, even if the physical document is still kept at home.”

HID Global Mobile Access Solutions Powered By Seos

HID Global’s breakthrough Seos® credential technology, on which its mobile driver licence concept is built, powers secure identity solutions and represents a new way of thinking about end-user experiences and their mobile devices. This technology has already enabled organizations, universities and hotel chains to securely provision IDs to mobile phones and other smart devices for accessing offices, hotel rooms, data and cloud apps, along with a growing range of extended applications that will soon include mobile driver licenses and government IDs.

HID Global will draw on its mobile ID experience as it shares with eID attendees the key policy principles that it believes are critical for leveraging the convenience and power of mobile devices to deliver secure, authenticated digital identities to citizens as a new, more convenient way to issue, carry and present driver licenses and other government credentials.

These Key Principles Include:

  • Voluntarily mobile – access to a citizen’s driver license should only be possible by some intended action on the citizen’s part.
  • Interoperable – a mobile driver license solution should be able to work with the major smartphone operating systems, throughout the North American continent.
  • Securemobile driver licenses should be provisioned using a strong standards-based cryptography platform so that citizen’s data only can be viewed by the intended authenticating smartphone.
  • Private – citizens should never be asked to hand over their smartphones and should have the option to release only the information required for a specific transaction. Any deployment of a mobile citizen ID should address the Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs).
  • Remote capable – even in remote areas, a mobile driver license should be securely available to citizens.
  • Always available –when a citizen’s smartphone is inoperable (i.e., because of a dead battery or other issue), it should be possible to securely access a citizen's driver license.

A pioneer in mobile ID, HID Global partnered with Arizona State University to complete the world’s first university pilot of Near Field Communications (NFC)-enabled smartphones carrying mobile IDs in 2011. Followed by successful pilots at Netflix, Vanderbilt University and elsewhere, HID commercially launched HID Mobile Access® powered by Seos in 2015. HID Global and its parent company ASSA ABLOY have since worked with Starwood Hotels to create the world’s first keyless hotel experience. Powered by Seos, Starwood’s new SPG Keyless program allows hotel guests to bypass the front desk and unlock their room doors using their mobile phones at over 150 hotels around the world.
