The Security Industry Association (SIA) has named Jim Black – senior director, security architect at Microsoft – and Ryan Kaltenbaugh – senior vice president for sales in North America at LenelS2 – as the 2023 recipients of the Sandy Jones Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes SIA volunteers who have made tireless efforts to expand SIA’s programs and services. SIA will present Black and Kaltenbaugh with the award at The Advance, SIA’s annual membership meeting, which will be held on March 28 during ISC West.

A dedicated member of SIA, Jim Black has served in a wide variety of volunteer capacities over the past 20 years, including most recently as vice chair of SIA’s Identity and Biometric Technology Advisory Board, serving on SIA’s Women in Security Forum Scholarship Program subcommittee, and participating as a charter mentor in SIA’s Talent Inclusion Mentorship Education (TIME) program.

Black has been a trusted resource focused on learning and sharing knowledge throughout his 28 years in the security industry. He currently serves as senior director, security architect on the Security Engineering & Critical Infrastructure team at Microsoft, where he serves as a technology leader supporting the company’s global data center infrastructure.

Black has taught and published articles on a wide variety of security topics

Prior to his time at Microsoft, he served industry pioneering companies in assessing risks, evaluating technology measures, designing mitigations, and engineering security solutions for some of the nation’s most critical facilities.

Black has taught and published articles on a wide variety of security topics and has participated in credential and standards development for ASIS International, the American National Standards Institute, and UL Solutions. He holds the Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP), and Certified Security Consultant (CSC) certifications.

Active member of SIA

Kaltenbaugh is an active member of SIA and member of the SIA Board of Directors who serves as chair of SIA’s Member Engagement and Experience Committee, which creates and evaluates initiatives that increase member participation within SIA and guides the development of member engagement strategies.

Kaltenbaugh developed the concept for National Security Technician Day, an initiative led by the Foundation for Advancing Security Talent and held annually on January 23 to honor security technicians across the United States.

Kaltenbaugh lends his federal security expertise to SIA as the former chair of SIA’s Identity Working Group, a member of SIA’s Government Relations Committee and a regular speaker at events like SIA GovSummit. He is a strong supporter of SIA programs and a regular sponsor of association events.

Leadership roles

Kaltenbaugh has over 20 years of experience in the security industry working for national and global security integrators and technology and software providers. Prior to his role as senior vice president for sales in North America at LenelS2, a carrier company, Kaltenbaugh served as vice president of vertical market solutions, marketing and communications, and federal government solutions at LenelS2.

In addition to his leadership roles, he has extensive experience in business development, disruptive growth strategies, vertical markets, channel development, and management, federal government physical/electronic security, employee engagement, merger and acquisition due diligence and integration, team building, strategic partnership development, and marketing and communications. 

Healthy Buildings Program

Kaltenbaugh continues to be invested in the industry through his extensive participation in associations

Kaltenbaugh is a member of Carrier’s Center of Excellence as a subject matter expert on electronic security for its Healthy Buildings Program launched in 2020.

Advance 2023

The Advance 2023 will take place on Tuesday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. in The Venetian Expo during ISC West. At this special membership meeting, attendees will hear a presentation from special guest speaker Christopher Grniet, global head of security and safety strategy at Visa; review official association business; meet the new SIA board members and participate in SIA elections; recognize volunteer achievements from the past year; and exchange market intelligence for the year ahead.

In addition to presenting the Sandy Jones Volunteer of the Year Award, SIA will honor the 2023 recipients of the SIA Member of the Year Award, Chair’s Award, and Committee Chair of the Year Award.
