  • Profile S To T Transition: ONVIF Security Update

ONVIF®, a recognized global initiative for standardizing IP-based physical security products, is set to feature prominently at ISC West 2026.

Taking place from March 25-27 at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas, ONVIF will be located at booth L20.

The organization will present the benefits of open, standardized interoperability and illustrate how its profile specifications enable integrators, consultants, and end-users to create adaptable, vendor-neutral security systems.

Advantages of Open Standards

Open standards play a crucial role in the security sector by facilitating competitive solutions for integrators, allowing end-users to select leading technologies, and enabling manufacturers to prioritize innovation over proprietary integrations.

The ONVIF presence at ISC West underscores the importance of standardized interoperability, showcasing the adoption of seven published profiles across more than 35,000 conformant products. This adoption empowers organizations to select and integrate top-tier security technologies without being constrained by specific vendors.

Facilitating Technological Integration

According to Leo Levit, Chairman of the ONVIF Steering Committee, "Interoperability in the security industry has always been about choice and flexibility." He highlighted that as intelligence extends across edge devices, cloud platforms, and hybrid architectures, the focus is on developing open systems that allow organizations to incorporate diverse technologies and adopt new capabilities as they emerge.

Standards must ensure that security infrastructures can evolve and expand continuously, helping organizations to develop architectures that meet their current and future needs.

Showcasing Interoperability Standards

ONVIF’s booth will highlight interoperability standards for video, metadata/events, and access controlThe ONVIF booth will feature interoperability standards for numerous security functions, including video surveillance, metadata and events, and access control. Video Surveillance with Profile T and Profile G supports standardized streaming, imaging, and edge recording across various cameras and video management systems.

Profile M handles standardized metadata exchange and event processing, incorporating MQTT messaging for effective device-to-platform communication. For access control, Profiles A, C, and D enable standardized interactions with door controllers, credential readers, and integrated security management systems.

Progress in Standards Development

Future ONVIF standards aim to tackle cloud connectivity standardization, permitting cloud-based VMS platforms to cooperate with cloud-based camera services independently of the vendor. Additional initiatives encompass metadata standardization, ensuring seamless integration of AI-generated insights between manufacturers' systems.

Efforts also include developing video authentication standards to confirm content integrity and interoperability standards for IP audio systems.

Enhancing IP Interoperability Solutions

Founded in 2008, ONVIF is a prominent industry forum advocating for the interoperability of IP-based physical security products. It unites a global network of approximately 500 companies specializing in cameras, video management systems, and access control markets, supporting an ecosystem of over 35,000 profile-conformant products.

Collaborating closely with its members, ONVIF continues to expand the range of IP interoperability solutions that its compliant products offer.

Show full press release

ONVIF®, the global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, will exhibit at ISC West 2026 at booth L20 from March 25-27 at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas.

The organization will discuss the value of open, standardized interoperability and highlight how its profile specifications enable integrators, consultants and end users to build flexible, vendor-independent security systems.

Benefits of open standards

Open standards benefit the entire security ecosystem, enabling integrators to deliver more competitive solutions, giving end users the freedom to select best-of-breed technologies, and allowing manufacturers to focus on innovation rather than proprietary integrations.

The ONVIF presence at ISC West emphasises how standardized interoperability, implemented in seven published profiles and adopted across more than 35,000 conformant products, gives organizations freedom of choice in selecting and combining best-of-breed security technologies without vendor lock-in.

Enabling organizations to integrate technologies

"Interoperability in the security industry has always been about choice and flexibility," said Leo Levit, Chairman of the ONVIF Steering Committee.

"With intelligence distributed across edge devices, cloud platforms, and hybrid architectures, the focus is on making systems more open, enabling organizations to integrate diverse technologies and adopt emerging capabilities as they become available. Standards need to ensure security infrastructure can continuously evolve and expand, giving organizations the freedom to build architectures that meet their specific requirements both now and in the future."

The ONVIF booth will highlight interoperability standards across multiple security functions:

  • Video Surveillance – Profile T and Profile G enable standardized streaming, imaging, and edge recording across cameras and video management systems from different manufacturers.
  • Metadata and Events – Profile M provides standardized metadata exchange and event handling, including MQTT messaging capabilities that enable efficient communication between devices and management platforms.
  • Access Control – Profile A, Profile C, and Profile D provide standardized communication for door controllers, credential readers, and integrated security management platforms.

ONVIF standards

The ongoing work on future ONVIF standards addresses standardized cloud connectivity, enabling cloud-based VMS platforms to work with cloud-based camera services regardless of vendor. This work also includes metadata standardization efforts to ensure that AI-generated insights from one manufacturer's camera can be understood and acted upon by another manufacturer's VMS. Other initiatives include the development of standardized video authentication to verify content integrity and address evidentiary concerns, and standards for interoperability with IP audio systems.

The ONVIF standards development process engages manufacturers, integrators, and end users to address these requirements while maintaining the vendor independence that has long been a hallmark of ONVIF. Whether deploying on-premise systems today or planning cloud-based architectures for tomorrow, organizations benefit from security products built on open standards that ensure long-term flexibility and investment protection.

Expanding the IP interoperability solutions

Founded in 2008, ONVIF is a foremost and well-recognized industry forum driving interoperability for IP-based physical security products.  The organization brings together a global network of roughly 500 established companies in the camera, video management system, and access control markets, supporting an ecosystem of more than 35,000 profile‑conformant products.

ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutions ONVIF conformant products can provide.
