Tortoise Media is to launch the fifth iteration of its Global AI Index, the first comprehensive ranking to reveal which countries are pioneering the global AI race, and why.

Through a combination of absolute and relative indicators, respectively measuring countries’ total AI capacity (scale) and their AI capacity relative to their population and economy size (intensity), the index’s latest update comes at a crucial time for the future of the technology and its impact on societies and economies.

New indicators

This year, the index expands its geographical scope to 83 countries (an increase from 62 in 2023), with new indicators and improved data organized across three pillars: Implementation, Innovation, and Investment. Together, the pillars cover talent, infrastructure, operating environment, research, development, commercial ecosystem, and government strategy.

Alexi Mostrous, editor at Tortoise Media, said: “The world of artificial intelligence is spinning fast. In the last 12 months, new large-scale AI models have been released and integrated into dozens of industries. Governments have introduced unprecedented levels of regulation. In this fast-changing atmosphere, this year's Global AI Index from Tortoise cuts through the noise and shows who's winning in AI, who's losing, and why.”
