A customized fire detection system from Hochiki Europe has been installed at Willis Aviation Services Limited's maintenance base at Teesside International Airport, establishing a new standard for safety within aviation environments.
The installation covers a vast area of 45,000 m², including hangars, workshops, and office spaces.
Hangars 7 and 8, which accommodate multifunctional facilities, necessitate stringent fire protection given the presence of high-value aircraft and flammable materials.
Innovative Fire Protection System
To address these requirements, Willis Aviation collaborated with local life-safety expert Render Alarms to develop and implement a custom-designed system centered on Hochiki’s sophisticated intelligent detection technology. At the core of this installation lies the Hochiki ESP intelligent fire detection system, noted for its open-protocol flexibility and forward-looking compatibility with the anticipated BS 5839-1 2025 standard.
The office areas benefit from adjustable smoke and heat detectors, providing dependable detection while mitigating false alarms to ensure continuous operations.

Meanwhile, the expansive hangar voids required Hochiki's FIRElink aspirating detection system, which employs laser-based technology for efficient monitoring with heightened sensitivity and reduced maintenance needs.
The installation team from Render Alarms used specialized design software to optimize the aspirating pipe network within the hangar's structural layout, achieving full coverage and regulatory compliance.

Luke Render of Render Alarms, the project’s lead engineer, remarked, "Hochiki's bases are a gamechanger, one base fits all devices. The sensors effortlessly twist-fit onto the bases, which significantly reduced the install and commission time, without compromising quality."
