The Admiral Lord Nelson School in Portsmouth has implemented a comprehensive life safety system to ensure the safety of its students and staff across three floors.

The school, with its specialized classrooms and extensive facilities, required a resilient solution capable of upgrading alongside its evolving needs.

SFA Fire & Security's Role

SFA Fire & Security was selected to oversee the project from design to installation, ensuring smooth delivery with single partner accountability. Leveraging 26 years of experience and their expertise in Hochiki products, they developed a robust life safety solution tailored for the school.

The team faced challenges due to the variety of specialized rooms, such as the laboratory kiln room and the sports hall, which required customized solutions to maintain safety without compromising functionality.

Addressing Installation Challenges

The ongoing daily routine posed obstacles, as installation in a live educational environment was unavoidably intrusive. To minimize disruption, SFA scheduled work during the summer holidays and half-term breaks, facilitating rapid onsite progression through pre-stage device addressing.

Additionally, the school's spacious glass-fronted atrium necessitated a different approach; traditional point detection was impractical. As a resolution, Hochiki's FIREbeam Xtra was deployed for its effective coverage and enhanced sensitivity, efficiently managing smoke detection and reducing false alarms.

Tailored Safety Solutions

Hochiki’s ESP protocol provided flexible, seamless integration across teaching blocks for full fire coverageHochiki's ESP open protocol proved to be a flexible and compatible choice, integrating seamlessly across multiple teaching blocks to achieve comprehensive fire coverage. The collaboration of Hochiki's products with an addressable Advanced fire control panel allowed for effective monitoring and maintenance, enabling quick response in emergencies by pinpointing fire locations accurately.

To meet the specialized requirements of each room, SFA strategically employed various heat and multi-sensors. Multi-sensors were installed in science rooms to differentiate between legitimate fire risks and transient false alarms from chemical reactions. Meanwhile, heat sensors in food technology rooms were advantageous for detecting significant temperature changes, indicative of real fires.

Customized Alarm System

Working closely with school management, SFA customized EN54 approved tones and patterns to provide distinct alarms for different situations, such as class changes, lockdowns, and fire emergencies.

This bespoke solution enhances the building's safety protocol, allowing occupants to respond quickly and appropriately, thereby reducing confusion and evacuation times.

Ensuring Future Safety

Naomi Fell, Project Director at SFA, remarked, "We have worked with Hochiki products over many years in various projects and environments and their reliability is top-class. Despite the tight deadlines, Hochiki's ESP open protocol and versatile product range made it easy to integrate into the existing fire system, and easy for the school to operate. It's a system that they can trust and use for years to come. We’re very proud to have been able to future-proof the safety of the school in this way."

This collaboration between Hochiki and SFA ensures the Admiral Lord Nelson School is equipped with a high-quality life safety system that can be adapted as needed, safeguarding its students and staff now and in the future.
