You want a security system that can solve your problems today, but you also want to plan for tomorrow. Vanderbilt integrated security systems are designed with the future in mind, making it easy for you to add new functionality, as and when you need it.

The world-renowned Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London treated its first patient in 1852. It currently offers the widest range of paediatric services under one roof in Britain, and pioneers new treatments and drugs through its research body, the Institute of Child Health.

Visitor Management

Great Ormond Street treats over 90,000 patients each year for some of the rarest and most complex conditions. It is a high-pressure environment, with a heavy and constant throughput of staff, patients, and visitors. The hospital was naturally concerned that any new security system should not inconvenience already pressured medical staff, or cause frustration to visitors. It required a system that could cope with this wide variety of users, including a high number of visitors, and yet be so convenient to use that it did not interfere with the day-to-day functioning of this unique medical facility.

In choosing an access control system, the hospital was also looking to the future. Pending modification of the hospitals existing IT systems, it is hoped that visitor ID cards will also be used to facilitate cashless vending throughout the building, enabling patients and visitors to use their ID to purchase, for example, phone calls and refreshments.

Perimeter Protection

"We specified Granta as it is a fantastic system that you know isn't going to fall over in years to come if you need to add additional facilities to it"

"We wanted to secure the perimeter of the building in the face of rising crime in London, and to bring the Trust's security in-line with BSIA standards. Great Ormond Street has not been a particularly dangerous place to work or stay, but there has been growing concern from staff and families about security matters," said David de Wet, Facilities Manager - Security and Transport at Great Ormond Street.

"This is a large system operating in a very busy environment. The security system needed to be easy to use and reliable, yet flexible enough to adapt to the hospital's future requirements," said Paul Roberts, Sales Director with installer Link Integrated Security Systems.

Vanderbilt Cotag Equipment

The Hospital has undergone a major security upgrade using Vanderbilt Cotag equipment to secure some 120 access points throughout the hospital building. Installed by Link Integrated Security Systems of Nottingham, the Granta for Windows V4 system utilizes 120 proximity readers throughout the site providing a secure environment for staff and patients alike.

The system provides an ideal balance between security and convenience. It enables everybody visiting the hospital to be issued with a pass which allows them easy access to zones they are authorized to enter, such as the ward where their child is being treated, while restricting entry to areas they do not need to visit.

Granta For Windows Version 4

Granta for Windows Version 4 includes a CCTV Manager, Visitor Manager, and TCP/IP support functions. Its Visitor Manager capacity allows users to check the status of visitor activities and security badges can be printed to incorporate logos, text, and the visitor's portrait.

"We specified Granta as it is a fantastic system that you know isn't going to fall over in years to come if you need to add additional facilities to it," said David de Wet, Facilities Manager - Security and Transport at Great Ormond Street.
