Kong Inc., recognized for its contributions to cloud API and AI innovation, has introduced new support features during the API Summit 2025 to facilitate enterprise-level adoption and expansion of MCP and agentic AI advancements. Among the notable introductions are the MCP gateway capabilities within the AI Gateway and an MCP-enabled Konnect Developer Portal. These tools are designed to offer a comprehensive and secure environment for the construction, operation, discovery, and management of MCP-based tools and applications that drive contemporary AI agents.
The release of these solutions highlights Kong's dedication to providing the necessary infrastructure and developer tools that allow enterprises to safely accelerate the integration of AI coding assistants, AI workflows, and agentic AI into their operations.
Tremendous Opportunities for Enterprises
Palladino added that the new product features proactively tackle vital infrastructure challenges
Addressing the significant potential that agentic AI holds for businesses, Marco Palladino, CTO and Co-Founder of Kong Inc., remarked, “Agentic AI offers tremendous opportunities for enterprises, but realizing that potential requires the right infrastructure. While MCP has emerged as the backbone for agentic workflows, there are real challenges around security, reliability, and performance.”
Palladino added that the new product features proactively tackle vital infrastructure challenges related to the protocol, aiding organizations in swiftly and securely deploying advanced AI agents into production.
MCP Governance Capabilities
Kong's enhancements in MCP governance through the AI Gateway include:
- Consistent MCP server autogeneration and protection: This feature enables automatic creation of secure MCP servers from Kong-managed APIs, speeding up the market introduction of intelligent AI agents and boosting developer efficiency in building MCP-enabled workflows across enterprises.
- Centralized MCP authentication: Through Kong’s dedicated MCP OAuth 2.1 authentication plugin, users can centrally secure all MCP servers. This setup validates tokens and uniformly applies security policies across servers, paving the way for a compliant and governed era of AI agents.
- Stronger MCP observability and governance: Kong Konnect dashboards allow for data capture related to MCP tools, workflows, and prompts, enabling analysis for cost-efficiency, performance tracking, and enhanced governance. This complements existing LLM analytics capabilities by providing extensive insight into all ongoing agentic workflows.
- Seamless, MCP-enabled access: By transforming Konnect Developer Portals into MCP servers, API discovery and access for AI coding assistants, such as Cursor, become feasible.
- AI Integration Composer and Runner: Users can discover, compose, and map intelligent API endpoints as resources for MCP servers, marking Kong’s initiation into AI-based integration. The AI Integration Runner generates and executes code necessary for these composed tools and integrations, with the assurance of security, reliability, and governance provided by the Kong AI Gateway.
Volcano SDK Introduction
Kong is also launching Volcano, an open-source software development kit (SDK) that aims to streamline and accelerate the development of MCP-driven AI agents. Volcano offers a lightweight, secure platform for developers to build, test, and deploy agentic applications, seamlessly integrating with APIs, MCP servers, and other AI systems regulated through Kong Konnect.
Palladino noted, "None of the existing frameworks for AI agent development have delivered on the ease, security, and simplicity that developers need. Volcano changes that. Combined with the agentic infrastructure that Konnect provides, organizations from builders to Platform teams now have everything they need to start creating advanced AI-powered integrations, workflows, and user experiences."
