  • Middle East conflict raises energy costs and reignites global inflation affecting security budgets.
  • Business investment offsets consumer spending decline, stabilizing labor markets and security market resilience.
  • Expert panel explores economic changes influencing physical security market dynamics and strategies.

Editor Introduction

At mid-year 2026, the broader economy tells a story of resilience under pressure. Conflict in the Middle East has triggered a shock to the energy supply, driving oil prices up and reigniting global inflation. However, a total downturn has been averted. Exceptional, historic levels of business investment and data center construction are providing a firm floor for growth, offsetting cooler consumer spending and keeping labor markets fundamentally stable. But how are changing economics impacting the physical security market? We asked our Expert Panel Roundtable: How do changes in the broader economic climate impact physical security?

Economic conditions often determine whether an organization takes a short-term view of security or a long-term view. During difficult times, businesses tend to focus on meeting baseline security needs. That often leads them to invest in security capabilities like video monitoring or additional security personnel, with less focus on analytics and other more advanced solutions. Strong economic conditions give organisations the flexibility to take a long-term view, allowing them to invest in solutions that do not just meet their immediate needs, but improve their future security posture. For example, investing in advanced analytics capabilities can improve the speed and accuracy of incident detection, helping security personnel respond more effectively. These solutions can often be used for operations and business intelligence purposes as well, providing benefits that exceed the initial investment. Ultimately, businesses should always be planning for the long term, but favorable economic conditions make it easier to do so.

Broader economic conditions continue to shape the physical security industry, especially around pricing and supply chains. One of the biggest challenges right now is volatility caused by the growing demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI infrastructure and data centers. This shift reduced DRAM supply, driving up prices across virtually all hardware and affecting the cost of many security devices. As a result, integrators and end users are trying to move projects forward, place orders earlier, and lock in pricing before costs rise further. Manufacturers are approaching demand forecasts cautiously, recognising that some of the current spike may be temporary due to orders driven by pricing and inflation. While these challenges remain top of mind, the physical security market has historically been more stable than other sectors during periods of uncertainty. Organisations continue investing in security, particularly as crime, operational risk, and business continuity concerns increase.

Economic shifts affect physical security in two ways at once. As economic conditions tighten, risks often increase. Organized retail crime can become more prevalent, while financial pressure may raise the likelihood of insider theft, fraud, and workplace incidents. At the same time, security budgets are frequently among the first areas organizations examine for cost reductions. Upgrades are delayed, aging systems remain in service longer, and capital projects are postponed. This creates a difficult reality: threats are rising just as resources are becoming more limited. Organizations that respond effectively do more than protect their security budgets, they redefine the role of security. By demonstrating how video surveillance, access control, and analytics reduce loss, improve efficiency, support investigations, and provide operational insights, security becomes a contributor to business performance rather than simply a cost center. In an uncertain economy, the most resilient security programs are those that can clearly demonstrate measurable value. When security investments produce business outcomes, they are far more likely to earn continued support and funding.

During economic downturns and upturns, physical security remains a resilient necessity for many companies. The relationship between crime and recessions is complex, but economic downturns can point towards a rise in criminal activity, making surveillance measures important for many businesses to prioritise. However, as physical security evolves, it is critical that the companies providing these systems offer solutions that both strengthen security and also offer an additional business intelligence solution. This can benefit the performance of that company during otherwise difficult economic periods by uncovering actionable intelligence through AI-powered capabilities. With advanced tools in hand, businesses can view what, in the past, was a necessary cost-center instead as a revenue-driving solution.

When the economy tightens, the market splits. Customers with restricted budgets delay full system replacements and look for targeted upgrades instead – solutions that extend what they already have while adding capability. We are seeing more demand for modular, scalable hardware that works within existing environments, not rip-and-replace. If you can show clear ROI, whether that’s reducing false alarms, lowering storage costs, or improving operations, you will win. At the same time, pure cloud solutions can face pushback. Between compliance, bandwidth, and data control concerns, hybrid and on-prem options are often the more practical choice.

Changes in the broader economic climate impact physical security directly because they immediately translate into budget pressure and tougher investment decisions. When organizations are forced to be more cost-cautious, security teams have to prioritise more rigorously: where to spend, what to defer and how to get the biggest risk reduction for the available money. That pressure can actually accelerate modernization. The focus shifts towards solutions that reduce operating cost and improve predictability. Cloud-managed access control is a good example: rather than maintaining on-premises servers and software, organizations can run access control platforms securely using a SaaS model and manage everything remotely. Subscription models also help address CAPEX constraints by spreading cost over time, while still enabling regular upgrades and security improvements. In a tougher economy, Total Cost of Ownership becomes the headline metric. Economic pressures do not remove the human factor — they amplify it. Employees remain a core security variable, and modern access control must support strong policy enforcement without adding friction.

Broader economic shifts directly shape physical security by constraining budgets, altering risk tolerance, and changing threat landscapes. Inflation, tariffs, and reduced demand have forced many organizations to scale back guard staffing, delay security system upgrades, and consolidate facilities, creating coverage gaps at entrances, monitoring stations, and critical infrastructure points. These reductions are often visible to adversaries. For example, retail chains have reported massive increases in organized theft after reducing in-store security presence, while manufacturing plants have experienced break-ins targeting copper and network hardware during a temporary shutdown where physical security posts were left unattended and systems unmonitored. Similarly, healthcare facilities have reported unauthorized physical access incidents linked to reduced staffing and relaxed access control enforcement. Insurers then raise premiums and tighten requirements for both physical and cyber protections, further pressuring organizations to balance cost control with maintaining layered security programs.

There are two macro-economic trends happening in the world right now that I think most people in this industry are underestimating. The first is AI, and I do not mean AI as a product or a feature. I mean it as an economic shift, the same way we talk about electricity or the internet. It changes power consumption, legislation, how organizations are structured. The second is the pull toward regionalization. We are seeing countries and blocs move away from global everything — global standards, global supply chains, global certification — toward their own versions. The possibility of fragmented technological standards becomes more and more real, and that could harm the development of technology. And every manufacturer and integrator ends up rebuilding compliance work they have already done, just for a different region. That is where a shared interoperability standard ceases being a nice-to-have and starts being the only way to keep the industry moving forward without everyone paying twice for the same problem.

Economic conditions have a direct impact on how organizations approach physical security investments. During periods of uncertainty, budget scrutiny increases, and security leaders are expected to justify every expenditure based on measurable business value. That shifts the conversation toward total cost of ownership, lifecycle management, and operational efficiency. For example, solutions with extended product lifecycles and strong reliability can significantly reduce the frequency and cost of technology refreshes. At i-PRO, our seven-year camera warranty helps customers extend refresh cycles by as much as 40 percent, reducing capital expenditures over time. Technologies that minimize recurring licensing fees, such as the VideoInsight VMS, can deliver meaningful savings over the life of the system. Economic pressure also reinforces the importance of open architecture. End users want the flexibility to integrate new capabilities without replacing entire systems. It is important to view security technology as a long-term strategic investment rather than a short-term purchase.

Editor Summary

Amid shifting economic pressures, physical security remains a resilient necessity. Tight budgets force organizations to prioritize baseline needs or delay system upgrades just as criminal risks increase. Security leaders mitigate these challenges by delivering measurable business value using advanced analytics and cloud solutions, transforming traditional cost centers into operational tools. Additionally, supply chain volatility and hardware costs prompt a focus on total cost of ownership and scalable solutions.
