The City of Dublin, Ohio, has implemented the SecurOS® Soffit pedestrian safety system to enhance crosswalk safety.
ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), renowned for its video intelligence and data awareness expertise, revealed the installation of this AI-driven system at the Brand Road crossing near Coventry Woods Drive. The initiative was a response to local concerns about pedestrian visibility and vehicle speed at crosswalks.
Enhanced Safety Measures
Following an analysis of traffic patterns, pedestrian volume, and speed metrics, Dublin officials selected the SecurOS® Soffit for its innovative approach to pedestrian safety. Unlike traditional streetlights that continuously illuminate entire areas, the Soffit leverages advanced video analytics to detect pedestrians as they approach crosswalks.
At that point, a dynamic LED lighting system is activated to specifically illuminate the pedestrian's path, increasing visibility while conserving energy and reducing light pollution.
Improving Driver Awareness
Marc Dilsaver, Dublin's Transportation Program Manager, highlighted the system's effectiveness, stating, "The Soffit has exceeded our expectations by providing the right amount of illumination to increase driver awareness of the presence of pedestrians in the crosswalk at night. Greater awareness is leading to more drivers yielding to pedestrians, and that’s the goal."
This strategic illumination encourages drivers to yield, enhancing safety for everyone on the road.
Integration and Data Utilization
The SecurOS® Soffit system also offers valuable data collection capabilities and can be integrated with existing crosswalk safety solutions, such as RRFBs, LED-enhanced signs, and HAWK systems, thereby augmenting traditional safety measures.
