Genetec Inc. has announced that the Fort Lee Police Department (FLPD) in New Jersey has upgraded its public safety operations with Genetec™ Security Center.
This modernization includes the integration of video management systems, automatic license plate recognition (ALPR), and Clearance™ digital evidence management tools. Located near the George Washington Bridge, the Fort Lee area experiences significant traffic, resulting in unique public safety challenges. The FLPD has adopted an open, IP-based system to enhance response times and improve collaborative efforts.
IP-based System Implementation
In previous years, FLPD transitioned to a unified Genetec video management system to efficiently manage its network of over 200 cameras distributed across the borough. Leveraging the Federation™ feature in the Genetec Security Center, the department can now incorporate video systems from local schools and municipal parking facilities, enhancing their situational awareness.
To further bolster vehicle-related investigations, the department has adopted ALPR technology. This system allows dispatchers to swiftly retrieve video and ALPR data via an interactive city map, providing crucial intelligence to officers on the ground in real time.

For investigative purposes, detectives can now centralize and manage digital evidence using the Clearance platform. This includes organizing video, interview recordings, and vehicle data into secure case files that can be easily shared with authorized parties.
Broader Operational View
According to Captain Porto, the previous method of acquiring video evidence from witnesses or businesses presented challenges. "Before, requesting video from witnesses or businesses was a challenge. Now, we can email a secure link, and the witness or business can upload the files. It automatically gets logged in the right case file. And since Clearance supports many different video codecs, we can view the video right away," Porto explained.
With this unified system in place, FLPD is poised to continue expanding its public safety initiatives in alignment with its operational priorities and budget constraints. Captain Porto emphasized, "We have a solid platform to keep expanding our city-wide initiatives, empowering our officers, and protecting the community we serve."
