Tuskegee University has unveiled a comprehensive, multi-year plan to enhance campus security through a collaboration with Honeywell's advanced AI-enabled smart access technology.
As one of the nation's prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tuskegee University is focused on intensifying safety measures for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The project will utilize Honeywell’s advanced commercial security solutions to implement centralized access control and real-time monitoring systems. These measures aim to improve incident response times and simplify security operations, demonstrating Tuskegee University's commitment to campus safety.
Meeting Rising Security Demands
In response to the increasing demand for enhanced security in educational institutions across the country, Tuskegee University is taking steps to improve campus safety. This initiative is expected to set a benchmark for on-campus security measures nationwide.
The university will integrate several of Honeywell’s Building Automation solutions to achieve these goals. Key components of the implementation include:
LenelS2’s OnGuard Access Control System
This system will manage all access points throughout the campus, allowing for comprehensive monitoring and control of entry. It will provide security administrators the capability to regulate sensors and door locks, facilitating secure entry to classrooms. The acquisition of LenelS2 in 2024 has expanded Honeywell’s Building Automation portfolio, offering a robust foundation for this upgrade.
Wireless Dorm Locking System
This solution will provide secure and convenient access for students to their dormitories. Utilizing mobile credentials, students can enter their living spaces using their smartphones or smartwatches, eliminating the need for traditional plastic cards. Once inside, students can digitally lock their doors from within for added security.
AI-Enabled Video Monitoring
A network of over 1,500 security cameras will be installed across the campus by early 2026, providing real-time anomaly detection and enhanced situational awareness. This system is designed to facilitate faster response times and improve overall campus safety.

Tuskegee University will utilize Honeywell’s state-of-the-art commercial security solutions to deploy centralized access control and real-time monitoring tools, helping improve incident response times and reduce operational complexity for security teams.
Mounting pressure to enhance security
As higher education institutions nationwide face mounting pressure to enhance security and adapt to new technologies, these upgrades aim to position the University as a leader in on-campus safety.
Tuskegee University will leverage several of Honeywell’s Building Automation solutions. Key features include:
LenelS2’s OnGuard access control system
It will serve as the centralized security platform that manages all access campuswide. The system will help facilitate and monitor authorized access.
It will also provide control over sensors and door locks, allowing administrators to, for example, unlock doors before class and secure them during class to help restrict unauthorized entry while protecting occupants. LenelS2 is one of the newest additions to Honeywell’s Building Automation portfolio following its acquisition in 2024.
Wireless dorm locking system
It will enable secure, flexible access for students to their dorm rooms and living spaces. Students will enter living areas with mobile credentials via a smartphone or watch, eliminating the need for plastic cards, which can be easily misplaced. Once students enter their dorm room, they will be able to digitally lock the door from anywhere inside.
AI-enabled video monitoring
It is anticipated to provide campus real-time anomaly detection, enhanced situational awareness and faster response by using more than 1,500 security cameras that will be deployed on campus by early 2026.
