The new line of extra-large X-ray flat panel detectors is designed to streamline the inspection of defense systems and essential components in complex production settings by offering extensive imaging capabilities, rapid data acquisition, and superior high-energy imaging performance.
Increasing Demand for Non-Destructive Testing
As defense manufacturers increase output for systems and components such as drones, ammunition, and turbine blades, the necessity for non-destructive testing (NDT) becomes apparent. The X-Panel XL series addresses these needs by providing large-area imaging and high frame rates, facilitating enhanced inspection processes and efficiency.

Historically, achieving 100% quality assurance has been cumbersome due to throughput limitations. However, recent advancements in X-ray imaging now allow for the inspection of significantly more extensive volumes of critical components.

Detection Technology, along with the German Fraunhofer IIS research institute, has demonstrated the advantages of large-area detector technology. Using Fraunhofer's PolyCT technology, multiple objects can be scanned simultaneously with the X-Panel 43108a detector providing the large imaging area needed for efficient multi-object CT acquisition.
Innovations in Industrial Computed Tomography
Michael Salamon, Group Manager at High-Energy X-ray Systems, Fraunhofer IIS, elaborated on these innovations: "We placed our PolyCT rotation stage in front of DT’s X-Panel 43108a detector to scan five objects simultaneously. We achieved excellent CT results in the shortest possible time while maximizing the throughput of our high-energy CT system. Combined with downstream automated evaluation routines, this is a real game-changer for industrial CT."

The X-Panel XL series includes the existing X-Panel 43108a and the recently introduced X-Panel 4386a detector solutions.

They also feature high-speed 10G Ethernet connectivity and frame rates up to 90 fps, which are essential for demanding industrial computed tomography (CT) and digital radiography (DR) applications requiring high throughput and reliable image quality.

The X-Panel XL series complies with relevant industry, safety, and environmental standards, simplifying system integration and certification processes.
EU-origin deliveries are projected to commence in the latter half of 2026. Detection Technology will exhibit the X-Panel XL series and the Fraunhofer IIS's PolyCT system concept at the European Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (ECNDT) 2026, scheduled for June 15–19 in Verona, Italy, at stand numbers 140–141.
