ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), known for its video intelligence and data awareness solutions, has implemented its SecurOS® Soffit pedestrian safety system in Kodiak, Alaska.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF), is situated on Rezanof Drive near Cope Street, marking the premier introduction of the Soffit system in the state.
Addressing Alaska's Unique Safety Challenges
The deployment tackles a specific safety issue faced by the region, particularly the extended periods of darkness during fall.
In Alaska, there's a noticeable rise in pedestrian accidents in September and October due to shorter daylight hours, compounded by the absence of snow that aids in pedestrian visibility. To address this hazard, the Soffit system was chosen for its capability to offer smart and adaptive lighting solutions.
Minimizing Light Pollution

Differing from conventional street lighting, which uniformly lights up an area, the Soffit system employs sophisticated video analytics to detect pedestrians nearing a crosswalk. It activates a dynamic LED lighting sequence that highlights only the pedestrian and their route, thereby enhancing driver awareness while significantly reducing superfluous light pollution. This selective lighting is particularly beneficial in boosting visibility during Alaska’s dim autumn conditions.
