DeterTech and Torchlight Technologies have announced a five-year strategic partnership to advance AmTag, a chemical tagging solution designed to combat the illicit arms trade and prevent the misuse of state-held ammunition.
This partnership builds on a successful pilot program conducted in collaboration with Conflict Armament Research (CAR), the UK Foreign Office (FCDO), and Somalia’s Office of National Security (ONS), making Somalia the first nation to have part of its national ammunition stockpile fully traceable.
Significance of the Somalia Pilot Project
The pilot project in Somalia marked a significant advancement in Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM), highlighting the effectiveness of forensic science in addressing arms division and related corruption, both of which are notoriously challenging issues.

Technological Innovations in AmTag
Developed by DeterTech, Torchlight Technologies, and Conflict Armament Research, AmTag employs a combination of rare earth elements and fluorescent compounds to produce a unique forensic "code" identifiable under UV light.
This solution can integrate seamlessly into existing weapon storage systems or during the manufacturing process. The technology is based on SmartWater, a tool that has effectively combated other forms of crime for three decades and has maintained a 100% conviction rate in contested court cases.

This resulted in the Federal Government of Somalia becoming the first country in the world to render part of its national ammunition stockpile fully traceable.

It can easily be applied within existing weapon stores or as part of the initial manufacturing processes. The underlying technology, SmartWater, has been used for 30 years to tackle other forms of acquisitive crime and retains a 100% conviction rate in contested court cases.
