  • Cloud offers unmatched financial and operational advantages over traditional on-premises infrastructure.
  • Key drivers for cloud-based security deployment include financial, operational, and strategic benefits.
  • Cloud transformation enhances delivery of physical security systems to customers effectively.

Editor Introduction

The cloud fundamentally changes how organizations acquire and use technology, offering a powerful mix of financial, operational, and strategic advantages that traditional on-premises infrastructure cannot match. Specific to physical security systems, there are additional advantages transforming how technologies and systems are delivered to customers. We asked our Expert Panel Roundtable: Which factors are driving the deployment of cloud-based systems in physical security?

Advancements in technology, the demands of digital transformation, and changing operational climates all point to the cloud as the future of physical security. Cloud-based systems enhance and expand a user’s security infrastructure, continuously adapting to growing physical threats. Cloud-based systems offer a unified approach to physical security, helping organizations maximize their asset protection while reducing operational costs. Here are some factors driving the deployment of cloud-based systems:

  • Remote management: Cloud-based infrastructure offers a more straightforward, quicker deployment of security services with remote management capabilities from anywhere in the world, optimizing security oversight for teams throughout the business.
  • System scalability: Cloud-based infrastructure enables teams to easily increase or reduce security services according to the organization's current requirements.
  • Increased adaptability: Implementing cloud-based technology not only adapts to existing infrastructure but also facilitates the integration of new, high-end solutions.
  • Reduced costs: Integrating cloud-based physical security systems can reduce the number of devices required and staff needed to maintain services, significantly lowering expenditures.
  • Data analytics: Cloud-based systems offer more data-driven insight into security operations through AI-assisted analytics.

Multiple elements are driving organizations to adopt cloud-based systems for their physical security operations. First, scalability and centralized management are key benefits. Cloud platforms enable organizations to control multiple sites from a central location while performing automatic firmware updates and implementing standardized security protocols across all locations. Second, cost efficiency plays a major role. Cloud systems enable organizations to eliminate their capital expenses for on-site servers and maintenance through subscription-based pricing models. Organizations with restricted IT capabilities find this approach highly attractive. The growing need for remote work and mobile access has created a demand for continuous security system monitoring which cloud platforms deliver effectively. The integration of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence becomes simpler through cloud-based systems. The tools improve threat detection capabilities and automate responses which results in enhanced situational awareness. Cloud-based systems provide organizations with faster incident response capabilities and better resilience through their real-time alert systems and off-site backup and disaster recovery features.

The post-pandemic shift to widespread remote work transformed the ability to manage physical security from a distance from a “nice-to-have” feature into an operational necessity. End-users now require the flexibility to access and configure their systems from anywhere. Simultaneously, as security hardware became IP-based, IT managers emerged as key stakeholders alongside security teams. Accustomed to the scalability and efficiency of migrating other business applications to the cloud, these IT pioneers naturally began demanding the same modern approach for physical security infrastructure. The financial model is an equally powerful driver. Cloud-based systems lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for customers by replacing significant upfront hardware costs with a predictable subscription fee. For system integrators, this shift reduces overhead by eliminating on-site software installation and manual updates. This subscription model also establishes a steady stream of Recurring Monthly Revenue (RMR) for dealers, moving the industry toward a more sustainable, service-oriented framework.

As one might expect, there are numerous factors driving cloud adoption in our industry. Organizations want systems that scale without a substantial upfront investment. They also want systems that can be accessed securely from anywhere without the burden of patching and maintaining on-prem systems. The cloud can deliver that flexibility, often at a lower initial cost. The cloud’s appeal is also about aligning security with modern IT practices. That said, video is heavy, and not every business can or should push everything off-site. Bandwidth, privacy rules, and uptime requirements can make a pure cloud model difficult and costly for many customers. That’s why the trend we are really seeing is hybrid. Keep the real-time analytics and recording at the edge, where speed matters, and use the cloud for what it’s best at: remote access, long-term storage, and managing multiple sites. Ultimately, it’s about giving organizations choice, without forcing them into a one-size-fits-all approach.

Cloud-based systems are not the end-all. They are a means to an end as businesses look for agility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. With cloud solutions, the physical security vendor takes full responsibility for the management of the whole solution. This takes the burden off IT and physical security teams. Organizations have lower upfront expenses and achieve more predictable costs, with the possibility to take an OpEx approach instead of CapEx. Cloud-based systems allow teams to get systems up quickly. Cloud-connected cameras and door controllers or cloud-managed appliances easily connect to a SaaS solution over the Internet. Users can log in to start viewing cameras, manage access control activity, handle incidents, and oversee their security tasks. Implementing a SaaS solution is not only a huge time-saver, but it can help streamline processes and open up new opportunities for IT and physical security to work together.

Several factors have driven the successful deployment of cloud-based video surveillance systems across businesses. Remote access through the cloud unlocks new capabilities for organizations to leverage, allowing teams to view, search, and respond to system events from anywhere. Automatic updates ensure users have the most secure, current version of system software. Analytics and emerging AI tools in a cloud video platform transform surveillance from a reactive security asset into a proactive source of business intelligence. Centralized management, which offers the ability to remotely oversee locations, devices, and system users, is made possible thanks to the cloud, providing a streamlined approach to organizational direction. Finally, a cloud solution offers a flexible, scalable option for businesses, helping meet today’s needs while paving the way for seamless future growth. Thanks to the cloud, organizations can leverage advanced, secure surveillance solutions from wherever they are on the device best suited for the task.

Several key factors are accelerating the adoption of cloud-based systems in physical security. Administrators are seeking convenience and efficiency, preferring not to manage on-premises hardware or software, which often require significant time and resources. Cloud systems offer seamless integration with existing IT tools like Okta or Microsoft Entra, simplifying user management. Additionally, cloud platforms enable a unified approach by combining intrusion, access control, video, and fire detection into a single interface, streamlining operations and ensuring that all data is accessible in one place. This centralization unlocks new capabilities, such as comprehensive analytics across multiple security domains and locations. It also supports advanced applications like AI, which require broad access to diverse system data. Finally, cloud-based solutions deliver continuous innovation, offering immediate access to new features, improved security patches, and rapid updates that keep organizations protected and future-ready.

Editor Summary

Driving the move to cloud-based physical security is a powerful combination of financial, operational, and strategic benefits. Cloud systems offer advantages like eliminating capital expenses for on-site servers, providing remote management and scalability across multiple sites, and simplifying the integration of AI-assisted analytics to enhance threat detection and situational awareness. No wonder cloud systems are growing so rapidly in the physical security market.
