Hikvision, a supplier of innovative video surveillance products and solutions, has launched a new addition to its Turbo HD 4.0 analog range with PIR technology to give it even more accurate detection. The PIR (Passive Infra-Red) sensor, which has a detection range of 11 metres, senses movement in an area. It has been added to four models (DS-2CExxD8T-PIR(L) series), so it is available in three form factors – bullet, dome and cube. Filtering Our False Alarms The sensor can filter out false alarms by differentiating between the infrared emissions of a human being from the other ‘noise’. So, when an inanimate object moves, there’s no alarm, but when it senses human body movement, an alarm is triggered. In the meantime, the camera generates flashing white light as a warning signal to deter the intruder, while it also provides supplemental light, allowing the camera to capture clearer image of the target in harsh environment. Filtering out false alarms saves on storage space and also means more efficient searching post-event, as there are fewer alarms to look through. The cameras are also equipped with ultra low-light technology, so they can produce clear, high quality images even in low-light scenarios – down to 0.005 lux. Camera Applications These cameras are really useful in applications where cost is a relevant factor, like for private residences and outside smaller retail outlets. Keen Yao, VP at Hikvision International Business Centre, said: “We are pleased to extend our Turbo HD 4.0 range even further to meet more customer needs. This technology comes into its own in perimeter protection, on fire doors in buildings and dynamic fire detection. Continuing to solve real-world challenges and create value for end users in multiple vertical industries, Hikvision demonstrated its advanced technology in three main areas: Edge computing, Cloud services integration, and Industry applications. Edge Computing Edge Computing is a method of optimizing IP cameras, NVRs, and cloud computing systems by performing data processing and analytics at the “edge” of the network – that is, nearest to the source of the data. This relieves the datacenter from concurrency stress by moving huge amounts of processing to edge nodes, improving agility, real-time responsiveness, and system stability. Hikvision’s deep learning products – the DeepinView Series Cameras and DeepinMind Series NVRs – are currently the industry’s best examples of Edge Computing. Powered by high performance GPUs and deep learning algorithms, the DeepinView series cameras provide striking AI technologies. These intelligence-based functions include false alarm filtering, facial detection, people counting and vehicle structured data. The DeepinMind embedded NVRs took inspiration from the human brain to perform astonishingly accurate false alarm filtering and other smart functions. To demonstrate this, the DeepinView Dual-Lens People Counting Cameras counted visitors coming and going at the entrance and exit of Hikvision’s stand at the CPSE exhibit. Also, the Tilt Dual-lens Pedestrian Density Cameras were installed to count pedestrian density there. The DeepinMind embedded NVRs took inspiration from the human brain to perform astonishingly accurate false alarm filtering and other smart functions Cloud Services Integration Integrated data from edge products such as the DeepinView and DeepinMind series are then collected and sent to the cloud to create and update big data storehouses. Moreover, Hikvision established a distributed structure incorporating cloud and edge computing, integrating the advantages of the cloud with the agility of edge computing through unified management of data from each technology. Cloud services enable flexible, on-demand allocation of algorithms and resources, and further provide a variety of open services such as video, big data, and basic security services. Applications of these services meet the needs of a multitude of industries and add significant value to businesses. Industry Applications Hikvision has successfully applied AI technology into many vertical markets. The company showcased its implementation in many industries at the exhibition, including Smart City, Intelligent Traffic, and Integrated Security Solutions. With AI Cloud technology, for instance, the Intelligent Traffic Solution provides efficient services for scores of roadway traffic applications. Hikvision, a supplier of innovative video surveillance products and solutions, has followed up its launch of the world’s first Deep Learning NVRs with a new series of IP cameras. The new “DeepinView” IP Camera Series delivers power and intelligence to boost the value of surveillance system performance across a broad range of security and management applications. Deep Learning Algorithms Hikvision’s deep learning algorithms bear much deeper programming compared against conventional intelligent algorithms, which only operate on the surface level. These algorithms perform feature-learning and provide astonishingly accurate and consistent video content analytics (VCA) performance. When coupled with high-speed GPU processing, Hikvision DeepinView cameras demonstrate faster computing with large amounts of data. Critical analytics – such as false alarm filters, facial recognition, people counting and ANPR – can now be reliably implemented in existing and new surveillance systems with versatile applications, providing a sophisticated level of tracking and alarm activation during incidents or even for pre-incident alerts. These analytics also enable customers to reduce the manpower previously required for searching surveillance footage, as well as improve business management efficiency and commercial ROI. Human Body Detection And Facial Recognition Hikvision deep learning technology enables the DeepinView cameras to detect human bodies while filtering out insignificant objects and movements within a scene where conventional VCA systems trigger false alarms. This is particularly useful for perimeter protection, where users often spend too much time and monetary resources locating significant alarms and relevant information. Critical analytics enable customers to reduce the manpower previously required for searching surveillance footage Facial recognition can be deployed in many security and management scenarios within a variety of applications to alert system operators to the presence of persons of interest. This is achieved by the facial image modeling and similarity calculation woven into the system. This technology is becoming a crucial tool against blacklisted personnel entering casinos, as the identity of an individual can be used to alert security guards to the presence of a known offender, enabling security personnel to deny access in that casino. In this way they can potentially prevent cheating behaviors. The technology works equally well in preventing the admittance of known offenders into venues such as sports stadiums or restaurants. People Counting For transportation hubs, retail stores, sports venues, visitor attractions, and car parks, the gathering and analysis of accurate visitor information can assist businesses to improve their profitability and site management. People Counting video analytics can track the number of people who enter and exit a particular area. It can record foot traffic through a retail store on a daily basis, or monitor the number of people in a venue to ensure that health & safety limits are not breached at any one time, as in a museum for example, where crowds move through on foot. Vehicle Management Traffic monitoring and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ALPR) analytics can be deployed to monitor vehicular traffic movement and enhance the efficiency of traffic management strategies. ALPR can be used to identify vehicles with listed number plates and allow them access to public and private car parks automatically. Hikvision DeepinView deep learning cameras self-learn the license plate information within a scene and recognize a larger amount of number plates than conventional ANPR systems, without the often cumbersome camera positioning adjustments. Hikvision DeepinView deep learning cameras recognizea larger amount of number plates than conventional ANPR systems DeepinView Traffic monitoring analytics, when applied in populous areas and on highways, capture traffic violations such as running red lights, wrong-way driving, illegal parking, and illegal U-turns, contributing to decreased traffic congestion and placing the public and vehicle passengers at lower risk of accidents. Deeper System Functionality “Offering security professionals much deeper system functionality, the new range of Hikvision DeepinView IP cameras combine video data, immense processing power, and Hikvision’s innovative set of intelligent technologies to provide a whole new level of video surveillance performance,” says Keen Yao, VP at Hikvision International Business Centre. “With the DeepinView range, deep learning video analytics will transform standard CCTV systems into intelligent and highly-effective, HD-quality, automated detection and alert systems, to support operators and to deliver more efficient surveillance systems management.” Hikvision has taken the Deep Learning technology and innovated a family of products to maximize its use, including the DeepinView IP Camera Series, DeepinMind NVRs, and the DeepinMind Video Analytics Server. Keen Yao responds to reports around Hikvision's ties to the Chinese state, and its role as the biggest video surveillance equipment manufacturer in the world Hikvision has been in the news in the United Kingdom recently, including a front page news story in The Times. SourceSecurity.com offered Keen Yao, Vice President at Hikvision’s International Business Centre, a chance to set the record straight regarding concerns expressed about hacking of cameras, the company’s ties to the Chinese state, and its role as the biggest video surveillance equipment manufacturer in the world. Hikvision has come a long way in the past few years. Since it was established in 2001, it has become a dominant force in the global video surveillance market, with annual revenues for 2015 standing at around $3.75 billion. Now in 2016, it has a market capitalization of more than $20 billion, employs over 18,000 people and has 40 wholly-owned subsidiaries or shareholdings companies worldwide. In mainland China alone, Hikvision partners with more than 40,000 distributors, system integrators and installers. According to research data from IHS Markit, Hikvision accounted for an almost 20% share of the global video surveillance market in 2015, up from just 4.6% in 2010. And its success is not limited to Asia – the company is ranked number one in the EMEA region with a 12.2% market share, and second in the Americas with 7.3% share. Security Concerns Voiced It is perhaps this spectacular growth that has fueled some of the claims and concerns about the company, most recently in the UK in a front-page article in The Times. While highlighting the company’s success – in the UK it has sold more than a million cameras and recorders installed at sites such as government buildings, airports and sports stadiums – the article questioned whether there is sufficient oversight of the security implications of foreign involvement in critical infrastructure. The concerns were raised in the wake of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s delayed approval of the Hinkley Point nuclear power plant, which is to be financed in part by China. "The recent Times reportincluded many inaccuraciesabout Hikvision and videosurveillance technology ingeneral" The article also questioned the ownership of Hikvision and its links to the government, claiming that the Chinese state holds a “controlling 42% stake” in the company. I asked Yao about their ownership structure: “The ownership structure of Hikvision, like many global, independent, publicly traded companies, is complex, and includes a diverse set of private and public shareholders.” According to Hikvision, 42% of the company’s shares are owned by China Electronics Technology HIK Group (CETHIK) and CETC No. 52 Research Institute; both are part of CETC, a state-owned enterprise. Just over 18% is privately owned by a Hong Kong businessman, 8.5% is owned by the company’s founders and executives, and the remaining 31% is owned by A-shares investors, including international institutional investors such as UBS and JP Morgan. “The recent Times report included many inaccuracies about Hikvision and video surveillance technology in general. Hikvision is a global, independent, publicly traded company. It is not ‘controlled by the Chinese government’,” noted Yao. Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities? The Times article also suggested that the company’s cameras could be hacked by Chinese government agents. Yao said cybersecurity vulnerability is a concern for all manufacturers, including Hikvision, which has “industry-leading cybersecurity best practices.” The company has an established network and information security lab, which is responsible for setting security standards, performing security evaluations and testing, and responding to security issues. It has also partnered with several security data and analytics companies to perform penetration tests and vulnerability assessments of its products. “Hikvision does not provide access to any government for unlawful surveillance through our equipment and is committed to maintaining the highest privacy standards,” said Yao. “We need to move away from outdated Cold War stereotypes and concentrate on solving the serious problems our global society faces today,” said Yao. “The real threat to the law-abiding citizens in the UK and elsewhere is terrorism and criminal activity.” "We need to move away fromoutdated Cold War stereotypesand concentrate on solving theserious problems our globalsociety faces today" R&D Commitment Hikvision’s commitment to technology is apparent in its R&D team of over 7,100 engineers. Hikvision says its significant R&D investment has led to notable advances in video image processing, video and audio codec, video content analysis, streaming media network transmission and control, video and audio data storage, cloud computing, big data, deep learning, video structuralization and others innovations. “Hikvision has achieved a competitive advantage in both technology and cost by establishing a systematic technology and product platform that enhances the product development efficiency,” said Yao. Meanwhile, Hikvision has established partnerships with world technology leaders including Intel. Commenting on the market research findings during IFSEC 2016 in London earlier this year, Cynthia Ho, Vice President at Hikvision said: "We are delighted to see Hikvision's rankings in the CCTV and video surveillance equipment sector increase once again on the previous year’s figures. This is thanks to our team’s hard work and the company’s continuous R&D innovation.” “Hikvision is dedicated to advancing the convergence of technologies, and the development of complete end-to-end security solutions, as was illustrated with the launch of many new product ranges and technologies at IFSEC 2016,” said Ho. Just a sample of these included PanoVu, Turbo HD 3.0 and a high-performance thermal camera range, as well as products with intelligent analytics for use within retail, transportation and building management applications. SMART SOLUTION 2.0 includes enriched Smart features across its entire range of industry-leading IP cameras, Smart NVRs and video management software, together with tailored applications specially designed to meet the individual requirements of key vertical markets, including the retail, banking, hotel and industrial sectors. "As the number of sites multiplies, client requirements and expectations vary more than ever, and IP is increasingly accepted as the de facto standard, a new generation of intelligent video systems is needed to address the critical requirements facing all CCTV systems", says Keen Yao, International Marketing Director of Hikvision. "SMART SOLUTION 2.0 recognizes that users need help to differentiate the real threats from the background noise and ways to efficiently retrieve this information amid the explosion in stored data. SMART SOLUTION 2.0 also recognizes that CCTV surveillance has made the jump from an assurance system to a key driver in many businesses and this convergence of security and productivity is set to accelerate." A New Generation Of Smart Features Hikvision's SMART IP cameras combined intelligence, efficiency, ease-of-use and high performance when they introduced Smart technologies such as Smart Codec, Smart Detection and Smart Control to modern video surveillance. Now, SMART SOLUTION 2.0 enriches the Smart features with Region Entry/Exit, Object Counting/Removal/Exit, Target Cropping and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). Region Entry/Exit detects people, vehicles or other objects entering or exiting from a pre-defined virtual region, triggering an alarm which may also generate further actions. The 'Object' tracking features build upon this to allow users to define an area of interest and count objects entering or leaving, with objects including people and vehicles. In a further refinement, Object Left/Removal can detect and prompt an alarm if an object is left in or removed from a pre-defined region. Rounding out the solution, the on-board ANPR analytics further help to detect and recognize a vehicle's license plate and send ANPR info to a Smart NVR or video management software for access management. It allows users to systematically manage videos and locate each individual vehicle in a given period of time, greatly accelerating post-event investigation. Vast Range Of Advanced IP Cameras From its inception, SMART IP has offered professionally-focused, high-performance cameras and NVRs. In line with the enriched Smart features, SMART SOLUTION 2.0 offers an exceptional range of advanced CCTV equipment to suit any application. Smart and Turbo HD lines were explained at the meeting ‘It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.’ (C. Darwin). This quote was shared by Jiangfeng Zhi, President at Hikvision Europe BV to the audience during the two-day event dedicated to the first European distributors’ meeting held in Lisbon on April 23-24, 2015. Sales Revenue Of 2.82 Billion USD In 2014 Hikvision has always been improving its products, marketing and positioning, seeking to anticipate future trends. This attitude led to a strategy adaptation, thus leading the Chinese company, sales leader in its own country, to expand overseas with excellent results – a sales revenue of 2.82 billion USD in 2014, 13,000 employees, 4800 R&D engineers. Aim At Highly Cooperative Relationship With Clients In the name of transparency and close relationships with partners, six special guests have been given a chance to speak, following the introduction of their respective Hikvision Sales Directors from Italy, North-West Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, UK, Israel and Russia. Each of these distributors shared their story and sense of belonging to the Hikvision family. Keen Yao, International Marketing Director, has frequently highlighted the importance of this event. It’s now clear that, given the strong position of product lines, the company should aim at strengthening a firm, trustworthy and highly cooperative relationship with its clients, that is to say the distributors throughout Europe. Hikvision Global Market Share Reached 11% In 2013 But there’s more, Hikvision does not only rely on the intuition of its managers and skills of distributors, but also focus on research to stay close to the market and customers. The Security & Fire Market Analyst Aaron Dale from IHS Research was invited to the event, and has brought figures and market trends for the forthcoming years. Given the drop in sales of analog cameras, it is now confirmed the growth of second generation HD CCTV devices, such as TVI technology, and the increase in IP cameras’ shipments. In 2013, Hikvision global market share has reached 11%. Dale subsequently touched upon the topic of key vertical markets for Europe. A special attention has to be paid to residential and consumer markets that will eventually involve both traditional video surveillance systems and Home Monitoring/Smart Home Video Surveillance. The Two-Day Event Organized At Xabregas Palace In Lisbon A charming Gala Dinner organized at Xabregas Palace in Lisbon has been the turning point of these two days: an occasion for networking and assisting at the awarding ceremony of distributors who have been invited on stage to receive recognition for their growth performance, technical support to clients or even the long-term relationship with Hikvision. The second day has then been focusing on in-depth presentations on technologies and products. Smart and Turbo HD lines have been thoroughly explained. That’s also because, together with a huge brand awareness activity, the company is aiming at achieving the “product-range awareness”. This strategy will be even more visible on the upcoming security exhibitions, road shows and events.
