Akershus Kollektivterminaler (AKT FKF), the operator for large transportation terminals in the Oslo region, such as the Oslo Bus Terminal and Aker Brygge Ferry Terminal, facilitates over 450,000 passenger journeys each day.

At the Lillestrøm Bus Terminal, a vital transportation hub, comprehensive surveillance for both indoor and outdoor areas is necessary to maintain safety and situational awareness. To address these needs, the terminal upgraded its monitoring capabilities with VIVOTEK's AI-driven security technology.

Challenges in Maintaining Safety

Prior to the implementation of VIVOTEK's solutions, Lillestrøm Bus Terminal experienced typical operational and safety difficulties common to bustling transit centers.

Limited visibility in both indoor and outdoor spaces hindered complete situational awareness

Limited visibility in both indoor and outdoor spaces hindered complete situational awareness, particularly in congested passenger zones and around bus platforms. Blind spots posed safety threats, increasing accident risks during bus departures. Moreover, inefficient incident investigation and high maintenance costs underscored the necessity for a more integrated and scalable surveillance system.

AI-Powered Surveillance Solutions

VIVOTEK enhanced the terminal's safety measures with an AI-powered security system to protect passengers, drivers, and staff while boosting operational efficiency.

The solution offers panoramic indoor monitoring, extensive outdoor coverage, AI-based search capabilities, and improved driver visibility. This security framework supports present operations and is designed for future expansion. The installation was executed by system integrator Nimbus Fiber AS and backed by Vicon Norway AS, VIVOTEK’s valued partner based in Oslo.

Comprehensive Monitoring Capabilities

Equipped with Edge AI analytics, these cameras automatically relay metadata to the NVR

VIVOTEK's deployment includes indoor CC9391-HV AI cameras for wide-ranging visibility and IB9387-EHTV-V3 AI cameras to oversee strategic outdoor spots, such as areas behind buses and nearby stops.

This configuration elevates situational awareness, covering traffic flow and passenger movement. Equipped with Edge AI analytics, these cameras automatically relay metadata to the NVR, while VSS furnishes a unified interface, allowing efficient use without additional software. VIVOTEK Deep Search further facilitates quick incident investigations by enabling operators to swiftly locate people, vehicles, and occurrences.

Enhancing Safety and Reducing Costs

To boost on-site safety, RX9502 Video Receivers have been installed across all 16 bus platforms, supplying drivers with real-time rear-view footage to minimize blind spots and avert accidents.

Replacing traditional PCs with RX9502 units reduces overall costs, system maintenance, and increases system stability, with RTSP streaming ensuring seamless video delivery. Additionally, the system, centered around a VIVOTEK NVR, supports centralized monitoring, scalability, and secure data sharing through a VSS Server environment.

Long-Term Benefits and Future Plans

VIVOTEK's AI solution has delivered significant benefits to Lillestrøm Bus Terminal, including enhanced safety, improved incident response times, and a stable, low-maintenance design. The scalable infrastructure sets the stage for future advancements, with plans to deploy VORTEX Connect for seamless integration and flexible access to additional terminals, ultimately reducing operational costs.

"This project has delivered exactly what we were looking for: improved passenger and driver safety combined with a solution that is scalable and future-proof," said Jafar Altememy, CEO of AKT, and Roy Helge Solvang, Project Manager at AKT, highlighting the alignment with AKT's long-term development plans.
