In today’s global economy, goods are manufactured all over the world and shipped to customers thousands of miles away. Where goods are manufactured thus becomes a mere detail. However, in the case of “Made in China”, the location of a manufacturer has become more high-profile and possibly more urgent. The U.S. government recently banned the use in government installations of video system components from two Chinese manufacturers, presumably because of cybersecurity concerns. A simmering trade war between China and the United States also emphasizes other concerns related to Chinese manufacturing. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: Should "Made in China" be seen as a negative in the video surveillance marketplace? Why or why not?
We are living in the age of Big Data, and businesses are inundated with large volumes of data every day. Success depends on capturing, analyzing and ultimately transforming that data into information and intelligence that can be used to improve the business. So, it is with today's physical access control and video systems, too, which also generate unprecedented levels of data. But how can we make the data useful to end users and how can they realize its full value? We asked this week's Expert Panel Roundtable: Relating to physical security systems, what is the value of data and how can that value be measured?
By definition, an edge device is an entry point to a network. In the physical security industry, edge devices are the cameras, sensors, access controllers, readers and other equipment that provide information to the IP networks that drive today’s systems. In the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing refers to an increasing role of edge devices to process data where it is created instead of sending it across a network to a data center or the cloud. In our market, edge computing takes the form of smarter video cameras and other devices that store and/or process data locally. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: What’s new “on the edge” of security and video surveillance systems?
High-quality products are the building blocks of successful physical security systems. How they are packaged may sometimes be seen as an unimportant detail or an afterthought. But should it be? Effective packaging can serve many functions, from creating a favorable customer impression to ensuring the product isn’t damaged in transit. Packaging can also contribute to ease of installation. On the negative side, excess packaging can be an environmental concern, especially for customers who are sensitive to green factors or to minimizing waste. Finding the exact right technology to solve an end user’s problem is challenging, but the rewards are great when an integrator gets it right. A wide range of available product types, price levels and added features increases the likelihood of identifying a technology to solve any problem. Companies will resort to cooperation in a mutually beneficial and complementary way Dahua 2014/2015 Review and Forecast:The global economy is in recovery, and China’s domestic market keeps its strong momentum. Politically, the terrorist attacks and uncertain factors still exist; and with years of market cultivation, people’s safety awareness continues to grow. Important trends include the popularisation of HD, intelligence, integration and the increasing impact brought on by the Internet and Big Data. The connection between IoT (Internet of Things) and video surveillance continues to develop; applications in smart homes and intelligent traffic are very good examples. What’s worth a mention is the rise of coaxial HD solutions represented by Dahua HDCVI, which provides a new approach to the market, accelerating the development of HD, going hand in hand with IP solutions. Recent acquisition news highlights the importance of software and hardware integration, resource integration, reconsidering the business mode and making proper shifts or adjustment. Companies have to be quite clear about their own advantages and use them well, rather than purely lowering the price, which is a dead end. The bankruptcy wave this year provides examples to the point. Analog is very likely to slump in 2015 while HD/UHD will be the mainstream. UHD (ultra high definition) products are very likely to take the market with their good cost/performance ratio product lineup in first two quarters. The vertical markets varies in a broader way, and intelligent analysis such as BI (Business intelligence) will be actively employed to generate data to support business decision-making. The interaction between cloud computing, Internet of Things, Big Data and the video surveillanceindustry will continue to grow. The competitive focus will shift from hardware to software; companies will resort to cooperation in a mutually beneficial and complementary way. The interaction between cloud computing, Internet of Things, Big Data and the video surveillance industry will continue to grow Manufacturers who are really able to provide reliable solutions and services have the chance to stand out. Meanwhile, the consumer market will be the next sector to boom. A market reshuffle is likely to continue. Companies that respect the voice of the market, create value, and are able to adapt quickly can withstand the challenges, or even emerge as dark horses; while those who lack vision or are not in sync with market trends/demand can hardly succeed. Last year’s business was great for Dahua. The growth in the camera lineup is quite impressive, the IP line enjoys 100 plus percent growth in overseas market. The CVI products gained great market acceptance and have been widely applied in many high-end projects around the world. The storage lineup’s growth was slower because Dahua started its business with DVRs, and its market share is already quite large. As for challenges, Dahua will pay more attention to software development and platform cooperation, further shift from being a product vendor to a solution provider and to create more value rather than focusing on hardware. Otherwise, it will just end in a price war and stuck in a helpless, infinite loop. The market demand is still large, and we have already accumulated valuable experience and gained brand awareness. Moreover, technology development and integration will further impact the industry and stimulate the market. The consumer market, Smart Home for example, is not yet shaped or even defined. Meanwhile, its business mode is in transition, which means there are a lot possibilities and opportunities to be explored and created. GSX 2019 got off to a jaunty start Tuesday. The show was humming with activity much of the day, and most exhibitors said they were pleased with the numbers and types of potential customers visiting their booths. There seemed to be less emphasis on product introductions than at the ISC West show in the spring (although there is much that is on the new side), while the trend toward system sales is continuing. Here's a review of Day 1 from the show floor. Dahua continues to educate market “Traffic-wise, the show is better than last year,” observed Tim Shen, Director of Marketing at Dahua Technology USA, at midday on Tuesday. “We met more people from Latin America,” he added. Shen theorized that Chicago is at the center of a larger territory of customers than last year’s location (Las Vegas).Dahua’s presence at the show makes a statement: “We’re still here" Dahua has faced some negative publicity in the last year since they were banned from procurement by U.S. government customers by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Dahua’s presence at the show makes a statement, says Shen. The statement is “We’re still here.” Shen said only one visitor to the Dahua booth even mentioned the NDAA on the first day of the show, and the visitor was misinformed about the provisions and implications of the law. “There is a lot of misinformation,” he says. “We need to continue to educate the market.” Facial recognition, video metadata, and people counting New at the show is the Dahua Analytics+ line of cameras that feature more in-depth analysis of data such as facial attributes, video metadata, and people counting. For example, the cameras can identify 128 points in a face, with an additional 256 attributes analyzed by the back-end recorder. Analysis can provide information such as age and gender, which can help a retailer analyze the demographics of their customers, for instance. Dahua is also adopting some of its consumer line of products for sale through the commercial channel. These include a flood light camera, a 2-megapixel WiFi camera and a doorbell camera. The products might be used outside of a retail store, for example, to complement Dahua commercial cameras that are used inside the store, says Shen. Dahua previewed a new multi-sensor camera that also includes a speed dome. The multi-sensor component combines eight views, each 2 megapixels, for a total of 16 megapixels. Below the multi-sensor camera is mounted a speed dome that can zoom in on regions of interest in the larger multisensor view. The camera will be launched in the fourth quarter. New areas such as cloud and mobile credentialing have the fastest growth rate, but are starting from a much smaller base, he said, so momentum in those categories will take time.ACRE sees continued rapid growth with no slowdown in the North American market Grillo noticed the first morning of GSX was busy, although there was a bit of a lull at midday. Cybersecurity concerns in access control I caught up with Grillo at the booth promoting RS2, a Munster, Ind., access control company that Acre acquired last May. It is the only Acre company that is exhibiting at GSX. RS2 is one of two access control companies acquired by Acre in the last year — the other was Open Options, Addison, Texas. Grillo said the two acquired companies are complementary, especially in terms of their sales channels and geographic strengths. Although both are national companies, RS2 tends to be stronger in the Midwest, while Open Options sales emphasis is centered in Texas and emanates to the rest of the country. Concerns about vulnerabilities are a growing issue in access control, said Grillo, and more large endusers are conducting penetration testing of systems. The industry should welcome the scrutiny, he added. Cybersecurity also represents an business opportunity in access control, noted Grillo. Concerns about the vulnerabilities of legacy technologies such as 125Khz proximity cards and the Wiegand protocol will likely accelerate the pace of companies upgrading their access control systems There seemed to be less emphasis on product introductions than at the ISC West show in the spring (although there is much that is on the new side) Eagle Eye Networks and cloud-based VMS Ken Francis of Eagle Eye Networks had already realized some new client opportunities during the first day of the show, although he was not optimistic at the outset. In contacting potential clients to meet at the show, he had heard that many were not attending. Among Eagle Eye Networks’ news at the show is full integration of body-cams into their cloud-based video management system. “It’s the most unique thing happening from a video management perspective,” Francis said. Previously, if someone needed a video clip from a body cam, they had to use a separate software system. Five years from now, at least 80 percent of all VMS systems will be cloud-managed" Francis continues to be bullish on the subject of cloud adoption of video management and made a bold prediction: “Five years from now, at least 80 percent of all VMS systems will be cloud-managed.” Eagle Eye Networks is doing its part with “rocket growth” that is reflected in an increase of company employees from 27 to 165 or so. Economies of scale have enabled Eagle Eye Networks to lower subscription prices by up to 45 percent. Genetec's release self-service PIAM system Many of the “new” products at GSX 2019 are slight variations on what was introduced at ISC West last spring. An exception is Genetec’s introduction of ClearID, a self-service physical identity and access management (PIAM) system that enforces security policies while improving the flow of people within the organization. The new system is integrated with the Genetec's Security Center Synergis access control system. PIAM systems have historically been customizable, complex to install and costly, which is why a lot of companies have not used a system. Genetec’s differentiator is that it is an off-the-shelf, out-of-the-box solution for a broader base of customers. “We scanned the market and found a lack of off-the-shelf identity management systems,” said Derek Arcuri, Product Marketing Manager, Genetec. “Targeting the mid-market, we are providing an accessible, ready-to-go cloud-based system that is ‘baked’ for the average company but can be integrated and expanded to include other systems.” The trend toward system sales at the show is continuing ClearID will simplify operation for the security department, which was previously tasked with a lot of administrative work in response to various departments. ClearID “pushes down” the authority to use the system to stakeholders (such as IT and/or facilities directors) and provides a system they can use themselves without involving security. “It empowers stakeholders and employees to work directly through the system rather than going through security,” says Arcuri. “It gives employees access based on stakeholder policies and improves the flow of people through an organization. The security director is relieved of administrative work and can work on ‘real’ security.” I saw some other things today, too, which I will share in a future GSX article... Dahua Technology, a video-centric smart IoT solution provider, has announced the addition of targeted vertical market solutions in the North American market. Vehicle inspection is one area where contemporary technology is rising to address a critical need. Preventing restricted items from entering high-security environments has traditionally been limited to the use of mirrors and police dogs, where blind spots and human error put detection at risk. In order to combat this problem, Dahua Technology offers two models of its Under Vehicle Surveillance System (UVSS). The system can provide license plate capture using a compatible LPC camera. The large field of view (approximately 180°) of the UVSS can capture the entire undercarriage of a vehicle when it’s driving through, which it then generates into an image in less than one second for immediate scrutiny. A portable version (DH-MV-VDM5021E-00) is built for ease of use, and an in-ground version is also available. Both options are well-suited for airports, prisons, and border control. IR License Plate Capture Cameras Both LPC cameras have 1/2.8-in STARVIS CMOS sensors, dual-stream encoding, Ultra Wide Dynamic Range (140 dB) and True Day/Night (ICR)Two high-performing partners to the UVSS are Dahua Technology’s 2MP IR License Plate Capture (LPC) cameras. These cameras capture clear images of license plates from up to two lanes of traffic at once, providing 1080p resolution at 30 fps for users to discern plate numbers. Both LPC cameras have 1/2.8-in STARVIS CMOS sensors, dual-stream encoding, Ultra Wide Dynamic Range (140 dB) and True Day/Night (ICR). Model DHI-ITC237-PW1B-IRZ has a 2.7 mm to 12 mm motorized vari-focal lens and can capture images of license plates from vehicles traveling up to 12 MPH. Another model, DHI-ITC237-PU1B-IR, boasts a 5 mm to 50 mm vari-focal lens and can capture license plate images of vehicles traveling up to 25 MPH. Coupled with a Dahua NVR or Digital Surveillance Software (DSS) Video Management System (VMS), LPC cameras become a complete traffic management or parking solution. Remotely Managing NVRs Dahua Technology’s enterprise-level DSS takes VMS to the next level. The all-in-one platform is preloaded with powerful software to improve system scalability. It lets users remotely manage off-site NVRs and other Dahua devices with real-time monitoring and playback. With a unified Dahua solution, integration worries are eliminated and installation and configuration become simpler. The platform doesn’t require channel licensing, which is hard to find on other VMS systems. EVS For IP Video Surveillance Rounding out the latest additions to the Dahua portfolio is Enterprise Video Storage (EVS). Increasing the scale of storage, the high performance of EVS is ideal for medium-range to high-end IP video surveillance applications that demand flexibility, reliability, and centralized storage management. It is compatible with numerous third-party devices, making it the perfect solution for surveillance systems with or without a VMS. Its open architecture supports multi-user access and is compatible with ONVIF 2.4; it also uses Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) protocol for data transmission. It is available with 24 HDD (DHI-EVS7024S-R) and 16 HDD (DHI-EVS5016S-R) options: the former supports 768 IP camera channels with 1536 Mbps of incoming, recording, or forwarding bandwidth; the latter supports 512 IP camera channels with 1024 Mbps of bandwidth. The excitement of ISC West 2019 continued until the very end – almost. Exhilarated by the first two busy days of the show, attendees and exhibitors seemed to welcome a slower third day. There were no complaints about booth traffic, and still plenty of thoughtful conversations taking place, everyone determined to maximize the value of face time with customers until the last second. Building An IoT Ecosystem In SAST At a show lacking in high-profile new technology announcements, the biggest news is perhaps the possible long-term impact of first-time exhibitor Security and Safety Things (SAST), a Bosch startup. SAST is building a new Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem for the security and safety industry, including an app store, an open and secure camera operating system, a software developer environment, and a portal for integrators. SOCs (system-on-chips inside cameras) are becoming much more capable" Their 1,800-square-foot booth was big for a first-time exhibitor, and the American football theme was well received, as was the substance of the company’s effort to drive innovation in a highly fragmented industry. Seeing actual cameras and apps on display at the ISC West booth is “more real than PowerPoint,” says Hartmut Schaper, CEO of Security and Safety Things (SAST). “For us, seeing is believing,” says Schaper. “It was important for us to show cameras and apps for the first time. People are surprised at how far down the road we are.” “This dynamic will change in the industry,” says Schaper. “SOCs (system-on-chips inside cameras) are becoming much more capable. Soon there will be more processing power on the edge. People will find a way to use the extra processing power.” “Seeing is believing” at the SAST booth at ISC West 2019, where CEO Hartmut Schaper showed several manufacturers’ cameras whose functionality can be expanded using Android apps Developing More Apps Several large manufacturers are already involved in the initiative, but there are some holdouts. “We are having ongoing talks with everyone to convince them to join,” Schaper says. “Some of the bigger ones will come around. We are not a camera manufacturer, and not a threat. We are owned by Bosch but are managed completely separately. There will be more and more apps developed, and momentum will increase.” “A year from now we will have successful customers we can talk about, and more camera manufacturers on board,” he says. “This year we are taxiing on the runway, but next year we will have cleared the tarmac and be climbing.” If the approach succeeds, their first appearance at ISC West will be remembered as historic. Future Of Surveillance Cameras Off the show floor, in a nearby meeting room, chip maker Ambarella demonstrated technologies that will be driving the future of video surveillance cameras, including more intelligence at the edge. “People have been using more traditional video analytics approaches, though most of them have been disappointing,” says Chris Day, Ambarella VP of Marketing and Business Development. “What is ground-breaking now is the use of neural networks and real artificial intelligence, which has increased capabilities 100x. "You will see camera products coming out over the next year that are massively better than before. It’s not just incrementally getting better. Cameras will be coming out later this year with analytics that are absolutely amazing based on [the new chips.]” Larry Anderson, editor-in-chief of SecurityInformed.com, talks about Ambarella HDR and Low Light Solutions with Jerome Gigot, Senior Director of Marketing for Ambarella. (Source: Ambarella) New Systems-on-Chips Ambarella has introduced four new systems-on-chips (SoCs) in the last year, with emphasis on computer vision (video analytics). The newest is the S6LM Camera SoC with 4K imaging technology, unveiled at ISC West. The S6LM includes Ambarella's latest high dynamic range (HDR) and low-light processing technology, highly efficient 4K H.264 and H.265 encoding, multi-streaming, on-chip 360-degree de-warping, cyber-security features, and a quad-core CPU. People shouldn’t forget what a good camera is, and there doesn’t have to be a tradeoff" “With so much focus on AI and computer vision, I’m concerned the industry has taken focus away from low light imaging, wide dynamic range and image quality,” says Day. “You have to see the details in an image. People shouldn’t forget what a good camera is, and there doesn’t have to be a tradeoff, it’s all included in one chip.” From Products To Systems With a new general manager on board (Daniel Gundlach, formerly of Bosch), FLIR Systems Security Division is continuing its transition from a product company to a solutions provider, removing internal silos to clear the path. FLIR offers a strong end-to-end portfolio for Smart Cities applications, including the TruWITNESS line of body worn cameras and newly acquired Aeryon drones. FLIR’s historical strength as the top thermal imaging provider continues, but today they are much more than a thermal imaging company, offering visible day/night cameras, infrared pan-tilt-zoom cameras, video management systems and other technologies to provide a broader platform. FLIR's Saros security cameras combine multiple security technologies, including thermal sensors, high-resolution visible imaging, IR and visible LED illuminators, onboard analytics and two-way audio and digital input/outputs. Products In Critical Infrastructure Applications In addition to Safe Cities, FLIR installs a range of products in critical infrastructure applications, such as oil and gas and electric utilities. Ports also tend to combine traditional security with an emphasis on perimeter protection, a FLIR strength. Existing perimeter protection applications can open opportunities for the broader platform. For example, installing a complete system in an airport that already uses FLIR’s thermal technology represents “low-hanging fruit” for the company, says Fredrik Wallberg, FLIR Director of Marketing – Security and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Ambarella demonstrates its latest imaging technology for video security during ISC West 2019 (Source: Ambarella) Integrated Solutions Bosch's Focus At the Bosch booth, there was an emphasis on integrated solutions and the customer experience. A mock retail store setup demonstrated systems such as overhead cameras for people counting and alarm communication to provide an alert if a refrigerator door is left ajar. A wireless panic button generates a silent alarm, communicates with a 2-way radio, and triggers a camera to focus on the area. An AVIOTEK IP camera alarms if there is a fire, based on observing actual flames rather than smoke. A new Bosch fixed dome camera series offers wireless remote commissioning capabilities that reduce installation and set-up time by up to 75 percent. Set-up only takes three steps: install the mounting bracket, connect the cables, and attach the camera module. Commissioning can be done wirelessly or remotely with no need for ladders or lifts. Dahua Marks Five Years In The States An IR illuminator is attached to each lens module to ensure there is always illumination in the field of view Time flies in the security industry, and it has already been five years since the Dahua brand entered the U.S. market. Today the company offers products through ADI and some 20 distributors, and has more than 30 technical consultants and technical support employees and 50 or 60 sales people in the field (including independent rep firms). “We are growing,” says Tim Shen, Director of Marketing at Dahua Technology USA. “It’s exciting for the company.” At ISC West, Dahua introduced a line of Multi-Flex panoramic cameras with lens modules that can be repositioned along an internal track for 180-, 270- or 360-degree views, providing flexibility for integrators. An IR illuminator is attached to each lens module to ensure there is always illumination in the field of view. Cost savings come from ease of installation (one camera instead of four) and only one VMS license (instead of four). AI And Night Color Cameras Dahua is also emphasising its Night Color cameras that remain in full color mode regardless of how dark it gets. There is no IR illumination or IR cut filter – the camera stays in color mode and displays any visible image in colour with as little as 1 lux of illumination. The 2 megapixel version is on display at ISC West, and a 4 megapixel version will come in the fall. A year ago at ISC West, Dahua emphasised its initiatives in artificial intelligence (AI) in order to position the company as a technology leader. This year, the message was more general – ‘Power Through Technology.’ The range of Dahua technologies includes AI, Night Color, Starlight low-light imaging, fifth-generation HDCVI, and e-POE (Enhanced Power over Ethernet). But we still need a proof of concept that it can do something good for end users. We need time to develop broader applications. The ‘smart retail’ market and education are good places to start.” he says. “AI is for project business,” adds Jennifer Hackenburg, Dahua’s Senior Product Marketing Manager. “Projects that are looking at AI haven’t come to fruition yet; they are still in the pipeline. It’s not for your everyday business. They are implementing it, but not as fast.” Access Control Beyond Doors Access control should extend beyond doors. That’s the message I heard at the ASSA ABLOY booth, which displayed a variety of physical locks and intelligent access systems. An example is traffic cabinets, those metal boxes in public locations that could potentially be accessed to invade an internal network. The company’s ‘security continuum’ message draws attention to the need for the right level of security for the right opening, using existing infrastructure as well as new electronic technologies. “Customers face a combination of non-traditional access control and questions on how they can secure things that are not doors,” says David Corbin, ASSA ABLOY Director of Access Control Accessories. The security message is resonating beyond the traditional security department to involve other stakeholders in an enterprise, including IT directors. There is new awareness of vulnerabilities that have been there forever, such as traffic cabinets that can be opened with a key purchased on eBay.

ONVIF, global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products held its annual membership meeting in early November this year, with an overview of important activities of 2018 and perspective on the year ahead. Attendees heard presentations on the final release of Profile T in 2018, an advancement which represents how ONVIF keeps pace with technological advancements that affect product development and interoperability between IP-based physical security products. Profile T For Advanced Video Streaming In an acknowledgement of its 10th anniversary, ONVIF chairman, Per Björkdahl highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past decade, including an overview of the six ONVIF profiles, with emphasis on the newly released Profile T for advanced video streaming. Collectively, the profiles provide support for the more than 10,000 conformant products that are increasingly included in various bid and specification processes in projects around the world. Björkdahl also cited the continued involvement of ONVIF as part of the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission’s TC79 for international standardization. ONVIF also recognized the contributions of four individuals from various ONVIF technical committees for their work on different profiles and committees. Fredrik Svensson of Axis and Dora Han of Hikvision were recipients of the ONVIF award, which acknowledges individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to ONVIF. As chairman of the Profile T Working Group, Svensson was a leading force in the development and successful final release of the Profile T specification. ISC West in Las Vegas kicked off with a bang on Wednesday, reflecting a healthy physical security industry with an overall upbeat outlook on the future. Driving the optimism is a pending new wave of product innovation, propelled largely by developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. Some of that new wave is evident at ISC West, but much of the talk still centers on what’s to come. Attendees flocked to the first day of the show to check out the newest technologies, and they were rewarded with a wide range of innovations. Tempering the optimism are ongoing concerns about ensuring the cybersecurity of IP-based physical security systems. Cybersecurity Standards For Physical Security At least one news announcement is related to cybersecurity at the show: Johnson Controls is the first company to achieve UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification 2900-2-3 for cybersecurity of life safety and security products and systems for their VideoEdge network video recording platform from American Dynamics. The UL brand ensures that the certification involves a standards-based and scientific approach to evaluating cybersecurity, and that JCI’s certified products meet the requirements. “We were able to be first because we understand issues of cybersecurity, and the UL standard matches very closely to what we have been doing in cybersecurity,” says Will Brown, Senior Engineering Manager, Cyber Protection at Johnson Controls. Tempering the optimism are ongoing concerns about ensuring the cybersecurity of IP-based physical security systems Neil Lakomiak, Director of Business Development and Innovation at Underwriters Laboratories, says relatively few companies have invested sufficiently in cybersecurity, and much of UL’s work in the physical security market is to help manufacturers develop a roadmap to meet cybersecurity goals. “A lot of companies have not invested, but Johnson Controls has,” said Lakomiak. He speculated that it could be some time before another security company achieves the certification; there certainly won’t be a rush of additional companies to do so in the near term, based on the progress he has seen to date, says Lakomiak. “Cybersecurity is a topic that has hit the Board of Directors level,” says Lakomiak. “They are definitely inquiring about it and trying to understand what their posture should be. The leadership teams of companies will be asking a lot of questions.” In terms of cyber-consciousness among the integrator community, Brown estimates about 10 percent are “on board” with the issue. Among the manufacturing community, more than half of the companies are pursuing cybersecurity goals, although the levels of those efforts run a full gamut, says Lakomiak. Vertical markets that are especially cyber-aware are enterprise, government, and critical infrastructure. Financial and retail companies are also coming on board, as well as companies — even small companies — in regulated industries such as utilities Cybersecurity is a topic that has hit the Board of Directors level Cybersecurity In The Cloud Another company emphasizing cybersecurity at ISC West is access control company Isonas. “What’s really new at the show for us is that we are being very transparent about the levels of cybersecurity we are applying to our cloud software platform and our IP network hardware,” says Rob Lydic, Isonas Global Vice President of Sales. “The levels of complexity we are putting into our cybersecurity, including the fact that we host our software on Amazon web services, ensures a really high level of security. We are taking painstaking efforts to subject ourselves to third-party penetration testing to give us the visibility of what is going on with our cybersecurity — are we actually as cybersecure as we believe?” The answer: “They have come back to us to say we have an amazing strategy for cybersecurity; the surface that is attackable is minuscule, and the complex layers underneath really prevent anybody from hacking the product.”We are being very transparent about the levels of cybersecurity we are applying to our cloud software platform" Lydic says he sees higher levels of awareness about cybersecurity at the show, especially among end users. Several other exhibitors agree. Because edge devices have often been targeted in cybersecurity attacks, they are especially an area of concern. “We’re raising that conversation, saying we are a cloud service provider that uses edge devices, and it is core to us to make sure we have a great cybersecurity profile, so the customer can be assured we are doing what we say we are doing and delivering on those promises,” says Lydic. Awareness is filtering through channel: Isonas is seeing many customers who want to have that cybersecurity conversation at the show. “We have had probably 20 or 30 conversations with end users at the show who want to understand what it means to be in the cloud, to understand how the level of communication is encrypted between devices,” says Lydic. Many end users at ISC West want to understand what it means to be in the cloud Ambitions For Growth Successful companies often increase their ISC West booth size as a reflection of their ambition to grow as a company and their success in sales so far. One such company is Paxton Access Inc., which has increased its booth size from a 20x40-foot booth last year to a 30x50-foot space this year. Beyond the show, another reflection of Paxton’s growth is addition of personnel to cover 11 U.S. sales territories that have been newly restructured. New regional sales managers will work with dealers locally. At the show, Paxton is introducing its Net2 Entry Premium monitor, the latest addition to the company’s Net2 Entry line of door entry products. “The show is definitely a great way to promote who we are and what we offer,” says Linda Soriano, Paxton Marketing Communications Coordinator. “It’s great to meet new customers and interact with existing customers, to build new relationships. It’s an opportunity to promote the new things we have going on.” Paxton measures success at ISC West in terms of how many people they interact with at the show. In addition to welcoming booth visitors, the company is signing up attendance at free training through a show promotion. Dahua sponsored a keynote address Wednesday on AI, including a presentation from Intel about AI trends. “AI is the future, but what can we use it for now?” asks Shen. “We need to give a very clear strategy of what we think about AI.” Dahua will bring AI cameras and an AI network video recorder to the U.S. market in the second quarter; in effect, they will be testing the water to see how well the AI concept is embraced here. Other new products from Dahua include multi-image and thermal cameras. In the thermal category, Dahua has developed their own chipset to help bring the price down and provide affordable thermal cameras to the U.S. market. International Standards Inclusion In the webinar’s opening remarks, ONVIF Steering Committee Chairman Per Björkdahl highlighted collective achievements of ONVIF since its founding in 2008, including the continued inclusion of ONVIF in international standards from organizations such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), on its IEC TC 79 standard for video surveillance and physical access control standards. Björkdahl also cited the progress of ONVIF on a system-to-system approach for interoperability between various management systems, work which is happening in tandem with continued development of additional profiles to keep pace with the changes of the industry. More than 57 senior technical experts representing state-of-art IP-based manufacturers from around the world attended the event Dahua Technology, a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of video surveillance products headquartered in Hangzhou, China recently hosted the 13th ONVIF Developers' Plugfest. Participation From Around The World The 13th ONVIF Developer’s Plug-fest was held at Dahua Headquarters in Hangzhou, China from November 11th to 13th. More than 57 senior technical experts representing state-of-art IP-based manufacturers from around the world attended this testing event. As a full member of ONVIF, Dahua was honored to host this important annual event. ONVIF is a non-profit, leading global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products that was founded in 2008. Its members include manufacturers, systems integrators, end users, members of the security media, specifies and other security professionals. The ONVIF standard currently addresses IP video surveillance and access control. The Plugfest consisted of two parts: peer-to-peer testing and user scenario testing. This format enabled manufacturers to test devices for conformance to the ONVIF standard and also provided a chance to simulate a real-world operation environment for testers. For example, the testing included testing interoperability between multiple brands’ devices operating at the same time as one system, working together. Interoperability Testing As a full member of ONVIF, Dahua Technology tested both devices and clients for conformance with Profile S, Profile G and Profile Q. During the three-day testing, the manufacturers present tested their systems’ interoperability with Dahua’s systems. The test results show that both Dahua clients and servers conform to the ONVIF Network Interface Specification Set, version 2.4.2, and also that Dahua front-end and storage devices can support recording control, search, replay, and many other functions with conformance to Profile G. Dahua’s devices are also capable of supporting extended features such as video analytics and OSD in addition to basic features such as video, PTZ, event and live streaming. “At the 13th ONVIF Developers’ Plug-fest, several manufacturers tested devices and clients for conformance to three profiles: Profile S, Profile G and Profile Q. The latest in video surveillance equipment at ISC West this week is reflected by the numbers you hear repeatedly on the show floor, numbers like 4K and H.265. Big players like Panasonic have joined the 4K bandwagon in a big way. Sony introduced a 4K camera with a larger sensor size (1-inch) to increase light sensitivity, displaying the better view alongside a “Brand X” competitor in the Sony booth. “Sharper and smarter” Promoting a theme of “sharper and smarter,” Avigilon is combining higher resolution cameras with video analytics, and introduced the PRO 5K camera providing a 16 megapixel image, along with a 4K (8 megapixel) camera. The cameras ship with “self-learning analytics technology” as standard, and work with Avigilon Control System 5.6 to offer new intelligent motion search and other features. Avigilon also introduced a 7K camera (featuring 30 million pixels), combined with High Definition Stream Management (HDSM); and also added a 6K (24 megapixel) camera. Avigilon’s LightCatcher technology (image processing) combines with larger pixel sizes (using larger CMOS imagers) to increase low-light sensitivity. Full HD solutions Chinese manufacturer Dahua introduced a line of bullet cameras that use H.265 compression, part of a full H.265 solution for the market, including front end and back end; they introduced the H.265 network video recorder (NVR) at last year’s Essen show in Germany. Dahua is demoing a 4K H.265 camera whose bandwidth needs are only slightly higher than an HD camera using H.264. Dahua is also highlighting the Starlight series network camera, offering low-light functionality and adapting to the needs of the individual scene, whether low-light or wide dynamic range. Dahua’s HDCVI Lite series (analog HD) offers better resolution and longer transmission distances, leveraging a new chipset, and provides an “economy” solution with 1080p full HD (the DVR will now cost 30 percent less). Dahua’s Eco-savvy 2.0 camera combines better resolution and lower power consumption. Dahua U.S. office announcement Dahua also announced opening of a U.S. office in Los Angeles to enable them to stay closer to existing customers, and provide end-to-end solutions to vertical markets. “We are expanding beyond distribution (of individual products) to a project-based business in vertical markets,” says Tim Shen, Dahua’s overseas marketing director. Multi-sensor cameras Panoramic, multi-sensor cameras are also more popular than ever. In addition to the new model introduced by Axis on Wednesday, Pelco is showing the view from its four-sensor panoramic camera in its booth, and all four images are stitched together perfectly for a complete, seamless and color-corrected view. Arecont Vision previewed its SurroundVideo G5, a 5 to 20 megapixel four-sensor 180 degree or 360 degree camera, now with remote focus and Arecont Vision’s STELLAR low-light architecture. A new Bosch panoramic indoor camera offers a full 180-degree or 360-degree overview of a particular area with 12 megapixel resolution (one sensor) at 30 frames per second combined with a fish-eye lens. “Pixels need perspective” Signs from Genetec placed around throughout the exhibit hall proclaimed “Pixels need perspective,” thus highlighting Genetec’s role paving the way to use the newer, higher resolution cameras popular this year on the show floor (including 4K, multi-sensor panoramic cameras and higher resolution 360-degree view cameras). Genetec is helping to manage the new cameras’ impact on the network infrastructure, including a new Hardware Acceleration feature on its Security Center Version 5.3, which shifts the “heavy lifting” of image decoding to graphics processors. The approach preserves smooth operation of existing CPU workstations, which are often the last components to be upgraded. Genetec continued to advocate strongly for cloud solutions, including its new CloudLink, an embedded “enabling technology” that allows video and/or access control systems to combine use of the cloud with on-premises equipment, all operating seamlessly together. The new Synergis CloudLink offers such flexibility to Genetec’s access control customers. CloudLink is also part of the company’s video systems and can even be embedded in third-party equipment, including Vivotek cameras (which are already using the technology).

HDCVI 2.0 is the only analog HD solution based on issued patents with a published specification and a rigorous compliance certification methodology.” Future Versions Of HDCVI 2.0 The Alliance is also already looking ahead, and has developed a roadmap for the subsequent versions. When the next-generation HDCVI 3.0 standard is introduced, it will provide for cost-effective 4K surveillance video transmission, while remaining backwards compatible with HDCVI 2.0. The HDCVI 2.0 standard in final preparation has been adopted by a number of semiconductor manufacturers, including California-based Exar, who will feature on the Alliance’s booth, alongside surveillance equipment manufacturing powerhouse Dahua and fast-growing American security brand Gen IV. Highlighting China’s Video Surveillance Giants, this is the second in a series of articles on the growing international presence of China’s top three video surveillance/CCTV companies. Dahua Technology Co., Ltd. is a Chinese video company with roughly 75 percent of its revenue coming from the huge domestic Chinese market. The rest reflects Dahua’s growing international presence in the video surveillance/CCTV market. Dahua's technology breakdown for overseas in 2014 is about 20 percent analog, 50 percent IP, and 30 percent HDCVI, which is a new higher-definition analog system catching on especially in the Southeast Asia and Latin American markets. Dahua standard for HD video transmission: HDCVI Developed in-house by Dahua, HDCVI (High Definition Composite Video Interface) is a standard for HD video transmission over coaxial cable that allows long-distance HD transmission at a lower cost. The technology can render either 1080p or 720p formats to provide megapixel and uncompressed image quality. Dahua introduced the concept of HDCVI about two years ago, and the first products shipped last September (2013). The newer technology, which provides HD quality using existing UTP cabling, is also catching on in Europe, especially Germany, Spain and Italy, where HDCVI provides an easy way to upgrade from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD) using existing infrastructure. Dahua’s HDCVI fiber transceivers, matrixes and converters enable the technology to leverage fiber optic cabling to transmit signals in large-scale and longer distance scenarios. HDCVI has been embraced by the HDcctv Alliance, a non-profit, global consortium that develops and promotes HDcctv standards. HDCVI has been proven reliable and workable and Dahua has completed several HDCVI projects around the world Tim Shen, marketing director, Overseas Business Center, Dahua Technology, says that testing has confirmed the good HD performance and image quality of HDCVI, which provides the benefits of HD but is more affordable than IP solutions. Although the market share is low, HDCVI is growing, says Shen. The industry has definitely noticed the new HD alternative, which Dahua has been promoting for five to seven months as an available, affordable solution for analog HD. “We are showing the options and solutions to the market. Meanwhile, we hold an open attitude to manufacturers to use HDCVI technology,” says Shen. In general, HDCVI's ease of installation makes it preferred in regions of the world that have a less-skilled base of installers, says Shen. The technology also lends itself to small and medium sized applications, especially if the video system does not need to integrate with other systems. It's an easy install in the casino and banking markets, for example. HDCVI has been proven reliable and workable and Dahua has completed several HDCVI projects around the world. Dahua has shipped "more than 1.5 million" HDCVI units to date, says Shen. “We have a clear roadmap of HDCVI and believe the technology will have greater acceptance in the world,” says Shen. Promoting IP surveillance and 4K camera technology On the IP side, Dahua has been involved in many large citywide projects. Dahua is also among the leaders in emergence of new 4K camera technology in the IP market, and is shipping its first 4K units in August (2014). Incorporating 4K into HDCVI is also in the supplier’s technology roadmap. Highlighting the company’s investment in new technologies, Dahua has over 3,000 research and development (R&D) engineers working at its headquarters. The company’s development of HDCVI reflects its commitment to technology leadership. The latest IHS Research market share report places Dahua as number two in the global market, right behind Hikvision, another giant Chinese manufacturer, and ahead of perpetual industry leader Axis. In all, Dahua sells video equipment into 140 countries. Shen says Dahua and the other top Chinese camera manufacturers are working to overcome the lower-quality stereotype of Chinese products. “We are the exception,” he says. “Many of manufacturers are improving a lot.” Dahua has increased its presence at global trade shows, with large exhibits at ISC West 2014 in Las Vegas and IFSEC in London. Shen says the company attended IFSEC because of the large number of European customers visiting the show. Dahua’s higher profile is intended to reflect the Chinese manufacturer’s commitment to support either its OEM or channel partners and to provide better service. Dahua plans to set up a support office in the United States to sustain sales through its OEM/distribution agreements. The facility will include stepped up technical support and a delivery warehouse, says Shen, and it will also support sales of Dahua-branded products in Canada.
