The award recognizes John Davies contribution to promoting UK export initiatives within the security sector John Davies, Managing Director of integrated security manufacturer TDSi, has been awarded the 2016 Chairman's Award for Contribution to Exporting during the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon, which was held at the London Hilton, Park Lane. The award recognizes his contribution to promoting UK export initiatives within the security sector, as Chairman of the BSIA Export Council. Commenting on the award following its presentation, John said, “I am highly honored to receive this special award from the BSIA. As the head of the Export Council my task is to ensure the British security industry understands the benefits and opportunities in engaging with markets around the world. With the current political situation in the UK surrounding Brexit, it has never been more important for businesses here to understand and work with markets internationally.” Continued Support To Export Council The award recognizes John’s long standing support and service with the Export Council. Daren Wood, Membership & Export Services Manager for the BSIA commented, “John Davies has been a driving force and keen supporter of the BSIA's Export Council, serving twice as its Chairman. First elected Vice Chair of the Export Council in 2008, John has worked very closely with the Association to provide advice and guidance to other security companies who were less experienced exporters.” Daren continued, “John then became Chairman of the Export Council in 2010, becoming a strong figurehead for the industry. Around the same time, he served on the UKTI DSO's Security Sector Advisory Group, assisting the Government in identifying security export opportunities. John started his second tenure as Chairman of the Export Council in 2015 and continues to be a strong voice for exporting in the industry. He now serves concurrently on the Home Office's Security Resilience & Growth Partnership as an authoritative voice on exporting in the security sector.” UK Security Industry Prospects John believes the UK security industry has a vital role to play in markets as far afield as North America and Asia, “What has struck me having worked with the BSIA (and TDSi on a commercial level), is how well respected UK providers and products are around the world. For instance, TDSi produces all its products in the UK, but we have a very healthy sales pipeline into China, which fully recognizes the quality and insight that features so heavily in our offering. Although China has a huge manufacturing base of its own, customers there are extremely shrewd and like to buy the best solutions on the market, with a huge respect for UK suppliers.” TDSi has a strong presence in many security markets around the world. For example, John has lead the company to considerable commercial success in the People’s Republic of China, including a deal signed last year for a five-year strategic co-operation agreement with China Rail Chen Bang Technology Ltd. This will see TDSi's technology used on rail and metro projects throughout China and will eventually include 20,000 stations on the China Railway network. "In my role at the BSIA I am very keen to ensure British security businesses fully understand the opportunities on offer", commented John Davies TDSi’s sales in China and Asia increased by 33% last year and the company has a strong presence in markets such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. The company also has on-going growth in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria, and is keenly looking to expand in other African territories. The company’s French office, which is based near Paris, also provides access to the considerable French-speaking regions of North Africa and the Middle East, as well as being a hub within Europe. The company is also looking to expand its technical and commercial expertise further into the North American market in the near future. Steady Expansion John added, “The British and European markets are steadily expanding, but there is huge scope in many other markets around the world. In my role at the BSIA I am very keen to ensure British security businesses fully understand the opportunities on offer and don’t let perceived language and cultural barriers get in the way of the exciting sales opportunities on offer.” John concluded, “The UK has some of the best scientific and technological minds in the world, with a great reputation for quality and innovation. It’s a privilege to chair the Export Council and I am passionate about its aims, so I am very humbled to receive this award from my peers.”

BSIA plays a pivotal role forging productive links between UK security companies and overseas buyers With the 18th edition of Intersec Dubai a little over a month away, BSIA members are gearing up for what promises to be one of the industry’s biggest trade shows to date. As the trade association representing the UK's private security industry, the British Security Industry Association, through its dedicated Export Council, continues to play a pivotal role forging productive links between UK security companies and overseas buyers including, most critically, in the Middle East. Intersec is pivotal to this process, with the BSIA - which is attending for the 18th year – having a number of members on hand across the three-day show to offer valuable face-to-face advice, and guidance, on the latest products and services that British security businesses have to offer. Annual "State Of The Nation" Survey Underlining the importance of the Middle East region to member companies, the BSIA’s Export Council – a dedicated forum for BSIA member companies who are focused on extending their business to overseas markets – has again conducted its annual ‘State of the Nation’ survey which considers global export trends. This year’s survey revealed that there continues to be a high demand for British security products and services, with 60% of respondents citing an increase in overseas business during 2015, and a further 30% stating that the level of business had remained the same. Further increases in overseas trade are expected for 2016, with a clear focus on the Middle East as an important market for the UK’s security sector. Almost half of all respondents identified the Middle East as the single most important target market and 80% of respondents are looking to increase their level of business in this important region during 2016. Daren Wood, Membership and Export Services Manager at the BSIA, comments: “The UK enjoys a positive international reputation when it comes to the provision of security products and services, in part due to the innovation which has become synonymous with the UK’s security industry. “Over half of the respondents to this year’s survey attended Intersec Dubai in 2015, which reflects the clear importance that this region has for UK security exporters and the pivotal role that Intersec plays in helping UK businesses to forge productive trade links with buyers in the Middle East” adds Daren. Looking forward to this year’s show - which takes place between the 17th and 19th January - a number of BSIA member companies will be showcasing their latest products, taking advantage of the show’s international audience which attracted over 27,000 visitors last year. BSIA members exhibiting at Intersec this year include: Remsdaq – Stand S2-F25 At this year’s show, Remsdaq will be launching the EntroPad® reader range; a highly secure read/write smart card reader solution supporting iCLASS, Mifare, NFC and Felica technologies. Keypads and contactless readers must be easily installed within the width of a door frame or mullion. They must also project and confirm an uncompromised commitment to quality and style. To meet this emerging demand for innovative technology and contemporary design, Storm have created an integrated keypad and contactless reader, uniquely exploiting use of light and form. When installed, the new S60 keypad/reader projects an atmospheric halo of light onto surrounding surfaces, producing an exciting signature effect for landmark buildings. Intersec will be a first showing of the new Storm-AXS S60 keypad and is not to be missed. "Exhibiting at Intersec showcases our solutions to the Middle East market and beyond”, says Clym Brown, Marketing Director at Texecom Peter Jarvis, Senior Executive VP, comments: “Dubai is a location that features many of the world’s contemporary landmark buildings. The survey has enabled to build an accurate picture of emerging trends experienced by UK security exporters Security exporters from the British Security Industry Association’s Export Council have reported a further increase in the demand for British security products and services in 2015 from overseas buyers. In an annual survey conducted by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), members of the Association’s Export Council – a dedicated forum for BSIA member companies who are focused on extending their business to overseas markets – report their experiences of exporting in the past 12 months and their expectations for the coming year. In this year’s survey – which was launched during UKTI’s Export Week - respondents revealed that there continues to be a high demand for British security products and services, with 60% citing an increase in overseas business during 2015, and a further 30% stating that the level of business had remained the same. Further Increases In Overseas Trade Are Expected Further increases in overseas trade are expected for 2016, with a clear focus on the Middle East as an important market for the UK’s security sector. 40% of respondents identified the Middle East as the single most important target market and 80% of respondents are looking to increase their level of business in this region. Over half of respondents attended Intersec Dubai in 2015, which reflects the clear importance that this region has for UK security exporters. “This annual survey has enabled us to build an accurate picture of emerging trends experienced by UK security exporters operating on a global scale,” comments Daren Wood, Membership and Export Services Manager at the BSIA. Daren continues: “The level of overseas business for our Export Council members continues to increase year on year and in an increasingly global marketplace, we expect more and more UK-based companies to turn to overseas markets in the future.” Overseas Distributors - An Important Target Interestingly, 2015’s survey shows that for 40% of respondents, overseas distributors are the most important target vertical market, compared to previous years were critical national infrastructure, utilities and government have ranked highly. Daren adds: “The UK enjoys a positive international reputation when it comes to the provision of security products and services, in part due to the innovation which has become synonymous with the UK’s security industry. “Despite this, there are still several barriers that UK security exporters are facing. For over half of the respondents, the most significant challenges relate to cost or price pressures and the continued burden of local certification costs. The existence of third-party certification schemes in many European countries continues to be a significant barrier - particularly for members of our Security Equipment Manufacturers section – in that there is a requirement for products to be tested to different standards depending on which country they are to be sold in, which is both time consuming and expensive.” However, the outlook for 2016 remains positive; 100% of respondents expect their company’s export business to increase over the coming 12 months. Anecdotally, members of the Export Council cited that they expect the introduction of more IP based schemes and a healthy demand for integration and home automation. “BSIA members will continue to capitalize on the demand for British products by growing their presence at key international trade shows, such as Intersec Dubai, Security Essen and IFSEC SE Asia. To support members to attend overseas trade shows, the BSIA organises UK Pavilions at several key trade events, thus forging productive trade links between UK security companies and overseas buyers from around the world.” Concludes Daren.
Exhibiting as part of a UK Pavilion can make expanding into overseas markets a much less stressful experience For the 80% of UK security companies wishing to increase their business in the Middle East this year, the Intersec Dubai exhibition represents an unmissable opportunity to showcase the latest products and services to over 25,000 buyers from more than 100 countries. With 2015’s show billed as the most successful ever – attracting a record number of visitors and exhibitors – stand space is fast running out for 2016’s event, which takes place between 17th and 19th January 2016. UK Pavilion At Intersec As a UKTI Accredited Trade Organization, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is once again hosting the show’s UK Pavilion for security, fire and policing, where a small number of stands remain available for British companies. With the logistics of booth construction and provision of services largely handled by the BSIA, we were able to concentrate on the promotional and sales activities required to make our trade show presence as productive as it could be.” Meanwhile, experienced exporters also benefit from the high profile of the UK pavilion. John Davies, Managing Director of TDSi and Chairman of the BSIA’s Export Council, comments: “Being an experienced exporter, TDSi still chooses to be part of the UK Pavilions at the international exhibitions it attends. BSIA will lead the way in facilitating UK security companies' attendance at overseas trade shows The British Security Industry Association has successfully achieved UKTI Accredited Trade Organization status and will lead the way in facilitating UK security companies' attendance at overseas trade shows. BSIA Will Take The Lead In Taking UK Companies To Overseas Shows As an Approved Trade Organization (ATO) for the security sector, the Association will take the lead in taking UK companies to overseas shows, while assisting companies with their Tradeshow Access Program (TAP) applications, which means that exhibitors can receive up to £2500 in funding (providing they meet UKTI’s criteria) to offset their exhibition costs. As an ATO, the BSIA will also provide management services for those organizations exhibiting in the UK pavilion offering shipping services and an onsite point of contact to assist with any issues they might have. The Association will partake in the Trade Access Program (TAP) and offer additional services and support to British businesses wishing to explore new opportunities in overseas markets. The status will formalise this role and is an endorsement of the activities already undertaken by the Association's dedicated Export Council, a forum of companies focused on expanding their business abroad. Help Exporters To Access The Government Funds The BSIA's ATO status will also help exporters to access the government funds that are available to companies who choose to exhibit on TAP supported pavilions organized by the Association. It is UKTI’s current strategy to increase interest in the high growth emerging markets while still recognizing the importance of elsewhere. Daren Wood, Membership and Export Services Manager at the BSIA, coordinated the accreditation process and comments: "The BSIA has already organized pavilions at IFSEC Southeast Asia and Intersec Dubai, and as an ATO we expect to be able to offer the same services and support for other exhibitions as identified by EC members. "As well as raising the profile of the Association and UK Plc, TAP Accreditation provides the BSIA with the continued opportunity to provide valuable input with government at policy level, which will prove beneficial for our members." BSIA’s Export Council celebrated its 20th anniversary with security exporters from across the UK Security exporters from across the UK gathered together with key industry stakeholders at IFSEC International to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the British Security Industry Association’s Export Council. Established in 1994, the Export Council serves as a dedicated forum for relationships between the UK's security industry and overseas buyers to be founded and cultivated, and acts as an invaluable port of call for overseas-based contacts interested in developing a relationship with a UK company as a partner, customer or distributor. Celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the Export Council took place on the BSIA’s stand (D1500) at IFSEC International, and featured brief presentations from current Export Council Chairman, Greg Stuttle of GJD Manufacturing Ltd, as well as founding member of the Export Council, Julie Kenny CBE DL of Pyronix, and UKTI DSO’s Senior Security Advisor and Head of Business Strategy, Simon Everest. Speaking at the event, Greg Stuttle welcomed the support of key stakeholders, including BSIA members and UKTI: “Exporting has become very important to our business and for all those involved in exporting. We get incredible support from stakeholders, the BSIA and UKTI.” Reflecting on the progress made by the Export Council over the past 20 years, Julie Kenny CBE DL added: “In the last 20 years we have worked together with the BSIA and UKTI to grow exporting within the industry. At the time [of the formation of the Export Council] we did not export more than 5% of our annual turnover, and that number has now exceeded 40%. For some members, this figure is as high as 70%” "We work closely with the BSIA and exhibitions around the world, and our relationship continues to grow from strength to strength supporting companies to grow their exports all over the world" Commenting on the prosperous relationship between UKTI and the BSIA, Simon Everest said: “We work closely with the BSIA and exhibitions around the world, and our relationship continues to grow from strength to strength supporting companies to grow their exports all over the world.” Visitors to the stand for the celebration included Commercial Officers from British Embassies around the world, as well as companies new to exporting, seeking advice and guidance on getting started. Daren Wood, Membership and Export Services Manager at the BSIA, comments: “For BSIA members, exporting became increasingly important throughout the economic downturn, and now that the country enters a period of growth, we expect more and more of our members to be exploring opportunities abroad.” “UK security suppliers enjoy a favourable reputation in overseas markets for their experience and track record in supplying quality security products and services, and the Export Council continues to help businesses capitalize on this through facilitating contacts with overseas buyers and the organization of UK pavilions at trade shows including Intersec Dubai, Security Essen and of course, IFSEC’s overseas counterparts.” “For two decades, the help and assistance offered by the Association’s Export Council has enabled UK security exporters to grow their business on a global scale, and we were proud to celebrate this achievement yesterday.”
