Many of the companies surveyed by BSIA are showcasing security products to Middle East buyers at Intersec 2016 A study on the development of statistical data on the European security technological and industrial base has shown that the UK’s security sector is in a promising era of growth. Published in June 2015, the study, commissioned by the European Commission DG Migration and Home Affairs, aimed at developing statistical data that would allow to obtain a clearer picture of the technological and industrial base of the security industry in Europe. The research took into account existing statistical data, while also carrying out a company survey in seven Member States (UK, Germany, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy and Poland), with the results extrapolated to compile an assessment of the size, structure and performance of the overall EU security industry sector and market. UK Security Sector’s Growth From these results, the outlook for the UK’s security industry looks very positive. According to the research, UK turnover growth has grown by more than any of the other Member States surveyed, with 35% of UK respondents citing that turnover has increased by more than 25% over the past 5 years. A further 15% of UK respondents reported growth of up to 25% and only 13% stated that they have experienced a decrease in growth. Looking ahead, according to the research, the UK’s security industry can expect growth of 16% over the next 5 years, well above the average growth rate for all respondents of 10%. Perhaps most strikingly, are the figures quoted for the UK’s security industry turnover and employment. The total turnover for all security products and services, as defined by the research, is €25.4 billion (not including defense), and an estimated 352,000 people are employed by the UK’s security industry. "This research demonstrates the economic importance of the UK’s security industry and it is pleasing to see data that supports the notion that the UK’s security industry is growing", says James Kelly, Chief Executive, BSIA Commenting on the results, James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), said: “This research demonstrates the economic importance of the UK’s security industry and it is pleasing to see data that supports the notion that the UK’s security industry is growing. The statistics show that our industry is performing well domestically as well as wider afield in global markets, positioning the UK as a global leader in security products and services. This is something that we should be proud of, the ‘Great British brand’ is in demand and I expect that this will continue to grow as more and more UK companies expand their business overseas.” Indeed, the research also tells a compelling story when it comes to export market share in total sales of security products and services. The UK has the strongest export share in total sales, with approximately 55% of UK respondents admitting to having a degree of export exposure. Interestingly, 15% of UK respondents claimed to have an export share of between 75-100% of total sales. 60% Increase In Overseas Business During 2015 Members of the BSIA’s Export Council – a dedicated forum for BSIA member companies who are focused on extending their business to overseas markets – have also reported an increase in the demand for British security products and services according to research conducted by the Association. 60% of respondents to the annual survey cited a 60% increase in overseas business during 2015, and a further 30% stated that the level of business had remained the same. According to the BSIA’s research, further increases in overseas trade are expected for 2016, with a clear focus on the Middle East as an important market for the UK’s security sector. 40% of respondents identified the Middle East as the single most important target market and 80% of respondents are looking to increase their level of business in this region. The BSIA will be based on stand S1-E46 throughout Intersec.
BSIA’s survey is open to all individuals involved in procurement and management of security products and services The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – the trade body representing the UK’s private security industry – is researching the procurement attitudes of end users. Better Understanding Of End User Needs The BSIA is seeking to understand the factors which influence security procurement and investment through an online survey launched this week. The survey – which is open to all individuals involved in the procurement and management of security products and services – aims to provide the BSIA and its members with a better understanding of the needs of end users. James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA, comments: “This survey will help the security industry to identify the factors that influence the procurement of security products and services. By gaining an understanding of our industry’s clients and their security needs, we can ensure a closer relationship between buyers and suppliers throughout the procurement, implementation and maintenance of security products and services. “We know that end users place a varying degree of importance on security and take differing approaches to procurement. We want to make sure that those responsible for the procurement of security solutions are receiving the goods and services they need, which are fit for purpose now and for the future.” Emerging Trends In Buying Behavior With questions covering a wide range of topics, including the impact of economic recovery on security spending, the survey will ultimately identify emerging trends in buying behavior, and how these relate to perceived security threats facing a number of business sectors, including retail, transport, healthcare and education. The survey will be open for responses until Friday 15th April and the results will help to underpin a campaign to ensure that security buyers are making informed procurement decisions on quality, future proof solutions. “Cheaper is not always best, and often, an unsuitable product or service can be more costly in the long run. The BSIA would urge security buyers to work closely with the security industry and to use the services of reputable security companies to minimize costs in the long term,” concludes James Kelly.
Properties become more vulnerable to opportunistic crime during the winter months As British Summer Time (BST) officially comes to an end this Sunday (25th October) and the nights become longer, the British Security Industry Association reiterates the importance of effective security measures for homeowners and businesses. Securing Properties Properties become more vulnerable to opportunistic crime during the winter months according to the Office for National Statistics’ analysis of seasonality in police recorded property crime, which identifies peaks during the winter quarter for both domestic and business properties. Indeed, according to insurance company Aviva, there is a 5% increase in claims for burglaries in the week the clocks go back alone. However, by simply ensuring that effective security measures are in place, this increased risk can be significantly reduced. “Preparing your properties for the winter months does not have to be a lengthy or expensive process,” explains James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA. “In fact, by simply checking that the security measures you already have in place are still effective can considerably reduce the risk of a break-in.” In the first instance, check that your gates, doors and windows are securely locked at all times and that the locks are in good condition. If locks are not in a good condition, it is a worthwhile investment to replace them as this is significantly cheaper than the damages that a break-in could cause. Adjusting Settings Of Electronic Devices If a property is likely to be vacant for any period of time during the winter months, taking simple steps such as keeping curtains closed but leaving a light on, or asking someone you trust to keep an eye on your property, can significantly deter intruders. “If your property has electronic security measures installed, such as CCTV, it is also important to adjust the settings to match the change in natural lighting,” continues Mr Kelly. “For example, if your CCTV system and lighting are controlled independently, the timer on the lighting needs to be adjusted once British Summer Time ends. If the lighting timer is not adjusted, there may be an unwanted gap created in the footage before the lighting switches on.” “If your property has electronic security measures installed, such as CCTV, it is also important to adjust the settings to match the change in natural lighting,” says James Kelly, Chief Executive, BSIA Those who work alone should also be particularly careful during the winter months, as the risks can be greater during this time of year, especially for those working remotely and frequently outdoors. Craig Swallow, Chairman of the BSIA’s Lone Worker Section, urges lone workers “to request monitoring if they feel at risk – places you might usually feel safe can feel very intimidating in the dark or during poor weather. It’s also important to remain vigilant and to try and stick to routes that are well lit when traveling at night.” Seeking Expert Advice There is a wide variety of security measures available to help protect properties and people during these darker nights. Before choosing a solution, it is important to seek expert advice where necessary, to ensure that the solutions are suitable for your property. “Ultimately, regardless of the solution you decide upon, it is important that you choose a professional security provider who meets the appropriate standards,” concludes Mr Kelly. The BSIA website provides details of member companies that comply with relevant British and European standards.

The apprentices were selected as award winners in recognition of their academic and practical success in the field of electronic security installations. Recognized The Achievements Of Level Two And Level Three Apprentices Awarded by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), the trade body representing the UK’s private security sector, the Apprentice Installer Awards serve to recognize the achievements of Level Two and Level Three apprentices involved in the installation of alarms, CCTV, access control or a combination of these systems, and represent the commitment of security companies and training bodies in providing young talent with the opportunity to succeed in the security industry. I hope to continue my personal development as an engineer with Compass Fire & Security with a view to one day being in a position to apply for more senior roles within the company. My apprenticeship and work placement have been both fulfilling and rewarding and I am very much looking forward to the next phase of my career in this industry.” Demonstrated A Good Knowledge Of IP-Based CCTV Achieving National Winner status is first-year apprentice, 17-year-old Christopher Hunt, who works for King’s Security. Following his father’s footsteps into a career in security, Christopher has earned the respect of his colleagues and mentors in the business due to his self-motivated and positive attitude. He understands the importance of the customer and always presents himself and the business in a good light. He is learning other parts of the business fast and is eager to progress.” Reacting to the news of his win, Christopher said: “I am honored to receive the BSIA’s annual Apprentice Installer Award. It means a lot to be recognized for the hard work I have been doing while doing my apprenticeship with Kings. The scheme has been amazing in helping me develop my practical skills and knowledge within the security sector, allowing me to ultimately develop my long-term career goals to work within the industry. I must say a big thank you to Kings, and particularly to my mentor, Andy Wood, who has helped me along the way with not only my practical skills but also theory and customer service skills, and I hope to serve as a role model for new recruits.” BSIA Support The Development Of Apprenticeships James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA, comments: “We are all well aware that in today’s challenging job market many young people may feel that a long term career is out of their reach. As such, the BSIA and its members fully support the It’s always a pleasure to be able to recognize the outstanding talent displayed by our young apprentices" development of apprenticeships which offer positions to young people who wish to gain practical skills and knowledge in the security industry, allowing them to ultimately develop long-term careers in the sector. “It’s always a pleasure to be able to recognize the outstanding talent displayed by our young apprentices, and I would like to congratulate all four of today’s winners on their achievements. Evidence also detailed PaS Initiative, an approach to improve collaboration between businesses, private security industry & Met police The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has submitted written evidence to the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee in advance of its first evidence session of the new Parliament. The Committee held a session on the financial sustainability of police forces in England and Wales earlier this week in the Houses of Parliament. As police forces across the UK have looked to make efficiency savings, the private security industry has stepped in to provide support, performing several key back-office functions on behalf of various forces across the country, allowing more uniformed officers to return to frontline duties. This has meant that police forces across the UK have been able to make efficiency savings without any detrimental effect on public safety. The Growing Role Of Private Security Companies The growing role of private security companies in delivering essential police support services has received a considerable amount of media attention as the amount of outsourced work has increased. The issue has received a mixed response, with some welcoming the cost-saving opportunities that police and private partnerships can provide, with others claiming that such partnerships will lead to a fully privatised police force. As the trade body representing the UK’s private security industry, the BSIA recognises the importance of frontline police officers remaining public sector employees, but supports the role of the private security sector in providing outsourced services in recognition of the fact that building effective working relationships between the police and private sector plays a huge part in returning officers to the frontline. Effective Police And Private Sector Partnerships Giving evidence at the session in Parliament was Mark Sedwill, Permanent Secretary to the Home Office, Sir Tom Winsor, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary and Alex Marshall, Chief Executive of the College of Policing. "BSIA members have a proven track record in delivering such services, from managing cordons to taking witness statements, and it is important that their contribution is not overlooked", said James Kelly, BSIA Chief Executive Commenting on the evidence session, recently-elected Chair of the Committee, Meg Hillier MP, said: “Policing is an issue which affects all in our communities. It is right the Committee should begin its work by pressing the Home Office on how they are managing the risks of squeezed police budgets, and explore what the Department is doing to work with HMIC and the College of Policing to get a clearer picture of the impact of its funding decisions on the police service.” BSIA Chief Executive, James Kelly, adds: “The private security industry has proved extremely effectively, time and again, that the valuable traditions of frontline policing can be adequately protected through effective police and private sector partnerships. BSIA members have a proven track record in delivering such services, from managing cordons to taking witness statements, and it is important that their contribution is not overlooked.” The Police & Security Initiative In the Association’s first submission of evidence to the Public Accounts Committee, the BSIA introduced the industry to committee members and reinforced the value of the private security industry’s role in delivering community policing, as well as supporting police in responding to natural disasters and the challenges of securing large-scale events. The evidence also detailed the Police & Security Initiative (PaS), a business-led approach to improve collaboration, communication and coordination between businesses, the private security industry and the Met police. This submission comes following the BSIA’s pledge to increase its political engagement activity following the General Election, when the Association published its new Government manifesto.
