primion Technology AG has designed and implemented new access control systems and access restrictions to several premises on behalf of Rhenus Midgard Wilhelmshaven GmbH & Co. The result is a global solution, which can be extended at any time and which guarantees advanced security at the port terminal.
Rhenus Midgard in Wilhelmshaven is part of the Port Logistics division of Rhenus AG & Co. KG. Rhenus is one of the leading European logistics service providers and is present in all major sea and inland ports in Europe. Rhenus has been supplying coal to power plants via the Niedersachsenbrücke jetty in Wilhelmshaven since 1974.
Due to necessary expansions, the coal terminal is being upgraded and a Niedersachsenbrücke jetty is being built for large, new-generation ships. Cranes and conveyor belts and an on-land coal store are also being built. Owing to the necessary innovations, operating processes are changing and flexibility is the issue.
Port security is of the utmost priority. Production and logistics areas must be fitted with access control systems, and surveillance and control are being managed centrally. A later possible relocation should be able to take place as part of the modification.
In the first phase, entry to the Niedersachsenbrücke jetty was newly regulated, with installation of a sliding gate and a barrier. The robust surveillance and communication technology installed there cannot come to any harm, even from the rough coastal weather, thanks to video cameras and an intercom system. Individual forms of access for employees and visitors, along with primion’s sophisticated visitor administration system, provide for quick clearance without queues.
Rhenus employees have access cards which they present to the LEGIC reader to get access to company premises. Anyone who has to go through the barrier in a car several times a day is issued with a special access card, which is automatically identified via a longrange reader from Deister Electronics GmbH. The barriers open, without the driver having to get out.
From his central control station, the gate keeper can see everything at all times via the different monitors. He can quickly assess a situation and, if necessary, lock access to all premises by pushing a button. The concept of the current and future security facility is based on the use of two fiber glass cables for the simultaneous transmission of speech, video, error messages and control commands. In this way, the gate keeper and security staff can be flexible and independent on location.
Helge Behrend, responsible for operations and port safety, emphasized that the access system can be developed centrally for different premises in one system and can be extended at any time: “With the new access control system, we gain in terms of security for our terminal.”
