ShotSpotter, Inc., global provider of security solutions that help law enforcement officials identify, locate and deter gun violence and active shooter incidents, has announced an updated version of ShotSpotter Missions – an AI-driven crime forecasting and patrol management software tool. Acquired from HunchLab in late 2018, today’s product release represents ShotSpotter’s first set of enhancements as it extends its penetration into this emerging category. ShotSpotter Missions The new enhancement to ShotSpotter Missions enables current and future ShotSpotter gunshot detection customers to regularly and accurately update crime and gunfire forecasts so that law enforcement agencies can better plan patrol missions. Updates are scheduled to happen every 24 hours as gunfire events unfold and as patrol shifts consistently monitor ShotSpotter coverage areas across their city. Agencies can then filter the data by date, time, area, and patrol or special task force units ShotSpotter Missions also includes a new report to help command staff better understand their patrol resources engagement. The new report shows which officers executed missions, and when, where, and what tactics the officers used during each mission. The report also includes the total available missions, total mission sessions, total minutes in mission, and number of officers on a shift. Agencies can then filter the data by date, time, area, and patrol or special task force units and then print or download into Excel. Crime prevention software “This first new release of ShotSpotter Missions since our acquisition of HunchLab is incredibly exciting and is just the beginning,” said Ralph A. ShotSpotter, Inc., the provider of gunshot detection solutions that help law enforcement officials identify, locate and deter gun violence, announces a new technology innovation unit – ShotSpotter Labs – to expand the company’s current efforts supporting innovative uses of its technology to help protect wildlife and the environment. ShotSpotter Labs is launching with an initial focus on helping combat rhino poaching in South Africa. Later this year, the unit intends to explore other applications for global wildlife protection such as combatting illegal blast fishing in Malaysia with underwater sensors. Multiple Poacher Apprehensions In 2014, ShotSpotter began a pilot of its gunshot detection technology in the Intensified Protection Zone of Kruger National Park in South Africa, home to 60% of the last remaining rhinos. Given the vast expanse of the park, most poaching incidents went undetected with carcasses found days or weeks after the fact. With the introduction of ShotSpotter to detect, locate and alert park rangers to gunfire incidents in under 60 seconds, there have been multiple poacher apprehensions within the coverage area since its debut. The UAVs will provide a video stream to rangers so that they can track the poachers. ShotSpotter has had to adapt its sensors and software for use in the sprawling expanse of Kruger National Park with no electricity available to power sensors. Improve Response Times Earlier this year, ShotSpotter announced an agreement with Verizon to bring the ShotSpotter solution to cities across the country by leveraging Verizon’s Light Sensory Network, an IoT platform deployed on street lights. ShotSpotter Flex helps law enforcement agencies by quickly directing police to the location of gunfire incidents. The SaaS-based system sends alerts within 60 seconds of gunshot detection to dispatch centers and to patrol officers on their mobile computers and smartphones. The alerts improve response times to crime scenes to better aid victims and identify witnesses, as well as help police locate key evidence to identify and prosecute suspects.
To expand the national conversation around the ongoing threat of gun violence to schools across the country, ShotSpotter, Inc. released newly compiled data tracking gunfire in and around public K-12 school communities within ShotSpotter coverage areas during 2017. The data revealed more than 4,800 gunfire incidents occurred during school hours within a one-half mile radius of public K-12 schools and within the coverage area. There are 2,320 public K-12 schools and over 1,079,700 students within ShotSpotter coverage areas in 77 cities in the United States. The ShotSpotter study tracked and analyzed data on the number of gunfire incidents that occurred at or near those schools across the time period from 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM local time, Monday – Friday, including summer and holidays. The study yielded the following results: 4,856 incidents in total were detected, averaging 93.4 incidents per week or 13.3 incidents per weekday across the 2,320 schools The 100 schools with the most gunshot incidents averaged about 23 weekday incidents in 2017 The highest round count incident was on April 10, 2017 (Monday) at 10:36 AM involving 29 rounds With more law enforcement agencies using ShotSpotter, many communities are now prioritising expansion to school areas as part of their gun violence reduction strategies"ShotSpotter Gunfire Detection Expansion For FUSD “We believe persistent gun violence around schools has become a terrifying reality for many cities and a variety of research shows that being exposed to any regular gunfire activity causes trauma in children, which can lead to negative long-term health and psychological issues including PTSD,” said Ralph Clark, President and CEO of ShotSpotter. “According to the Baltimore Sun, nearly one-third of children exposed to violence experience PTSD, very similar to what soldiers’ experience after fighting on the front lines in a war zone. Many medium and large-sized cities where ShotSpotter is deployed across the U.S. saw a measurable reduction in gunfire ranging from 6 to 34 percent for 2017 vs 2016, including: (in alphabetical order) Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Riviera Beach, FL; San Francisco, CA; Savannah, GA; Washington D.C., and Worcester, MA. The single busiest day of reported gunfire was June 22, 2017 in a midwest city with 75 incidents Reduced Gunfire Incidents The ShotSpotter 2017 National Gunfire Index report is based on data from U.S. cities that used ShotSpotter during the same time period year-over-year in 2016 and 2017. Overall, the western region of the U.S. saw the most significant decrease in gunfire activity. The single busiest day of reported gunfire was June 22, 2017 in a midwest city with 75 incidents – down significantly from the busiest day of gunfire in 2016 that topped out with 339 incidents on October 23, 2016. The ShotSpotter National Gunfire Index found the busiest hour for gunfire in 2017 for any one city was on November 6 from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with 35 gunfire incidents. The ShotSpotter National Gunfire Index also revealed that incidents with single rounds were on the rise during 2017 and a trend towards a longer ‘weekend’ with increased activity on Mondays, as well as the traditional spike in gunfire seen during the period of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Other Key Findings Include: Gunfire by night of the week – a longer ‘weekend’ period emerges: The total number of incidents per day reported by ShotSpotter rose 10% on Monday compared to 2% Tuesday through Friday. Monday edged out Thursday to become the fourth busiest night after (in order of total gunfire incidents reported) Saturday, Friday, and Sunday Average number of rounds per reported incident was mostly steady, except for the West and Caribbean where total incidents remain the highest, but dropped considerably year over year. Northeast 3.3 rounds per incident (2016, 3.3) Midwest 3.5 rounds per incident (2016, 3.6) South 3.7 rounds per incident (2016, 3.7) West 3.9 rounds per incident (2016, 4.4) Caribbean (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands) 4.7 rounds per incident (2016, 6.3) Cities in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico are not counted in gunfire rate calculations or comparisons because of long-term power outages at the end of 2017 caused by Hurricane Maria. Data from these cities are counted in other calculations, such as the number of rounds per incident, percent gunfire by hour of day, etc., and is derived from the coverage period of January 1 to September 5, 2017. Gunfire incidents peak between 10PM-12 midnight – the number of gunfire incidents by hour of day peaks at 10PM-11PM followed by 11PM-12 midnight and starts declining at midnight.
