News mentions
IDIS will be highlighting the latest advances in deep learning video analytics, with accuracy, at ISC West 2020. Building on its track record of artificial intelligence innovation, IDIS has taken another step forward in neural networks developing what is now one of most accurate AI engines available. Users can easily access a range of advanced AI tools through the latest version of IDIS Deep Learning Analytics (IDLA) technology, either as a service module with the IDIS Solution Suite VMS or via the cost-effective AI in the Box appliance for smaller applications. Korea’s largest video tech manufacturer will be demonstrating the latest AI-driven metadata filtering capabilities, designed to make incident investigation faster and more effective. Incident management This guides first responders to take the most appropriate action and reduces the chance of incidents being missed IDLA makes control room operations more efficient by dramatically reducing false positive alarms and in turn supporting proactive decision making and prompting faster officer intervention during security and life safety events. It can accurately recognize incidents such as intrusion, loitering, and trespassing, all in real-time, and trigger notifications. In practice, this guides first responders to take the most appropriate action and reduces the chance of incidents being missed. IDIS Instant Meta Filtering (IMF) now allows users to exploit the power of metadata to speed up incident investigations. Operators can do this not just through IDLA but also through the totally cost free IDIS Center VMS via the deployment of new IDIS 6000 Series Edge VA (EVA) cameras. IDLA or EVA cameras record metadata even when an analytic rule is not applied. Person Match tool This allows operators to easily collate footage, with IDIS IMF scanning hours of recorded video from multiple streams, to identify relevant data. This makes it easy to search footage to track a person or vehicle, cutting through large volumes of video data to reveal the movements and last-known locations of persons or vehicles of interest. For example, using the Person Match tool the operator simply highlights the video image of a suspected perpetrator and within seconds IMF provides thumbnails of the person it identifies as being the suspect. The operator can then simply click the thumbnails to view the relevant video clips. Reduce investigation time IDIS will be showcasing its line-up of analytics appliances and specialty cameras IDLA combined with IMF promises to deliver significant labor efficiencies and reduce investigations from days or hours to just minutes. For busy security departments, this means less time spent staring at screens and more time engaged with more important and rewarding duties. IDIS will also be focusing its solutions on important vertical markets. For systems integrators there are now major opportunities to help retailers grow combined online/in-store customer experiences and operational efficiency. DC-C4212RX 2MP micro dome camera To serve this fast moving sector, IDIS will be showcasing its line-up of analytics appliances and specialty cameras which now includes new 12MP Panomorph and 5MP Compact Super Fisheyes, giving complete situational awareness of stores and logistics centers. In addition, the new, compact DC-C4212RX 2MP micro dome camera blends discretely with the aesthetics of high-end locations such as jewelery stores and designer boutiques. IDIS will also demonstrate the new reporting capabilities within its popular retail plug-and-play, VA in the Box analytics appliance. These make it easy for store managers to compile and access business intelligence reports across branches, all through the convenience of a web browser. IDIS Solution Suite IDIS Solution Suite is proving particularly popular as a scalable and affordable VMS In the education sector, IDIS has a growing track record of systems installed at schools and colleges where it is helping to create safer, more positive learning environments. IDIS Solution Suite is proving particularly popular as a scalable, affordable VMS that works with a wide range of robust NVRs and cameras suitable for varied lighting conditions and locations all backed by the IDIS Ultimate Warranty. Through August 2019, IDIS, the South Korean video surveillance solutions manufacturer will highlight the applicability of its end-to-end Total Solution to the spectrum of challenges facing campus safety and security professionals in the Americas. Campus Safety Conference IDIS America, the regional headquarters for South Korea’s in-country manufacturer of surveillance technology, kicks off several weeks of focus on the unique challenges and concerns related to campus security in the Americas. Beginning with an appearance at the 2019 Campus Safety conference in Dallas and continuing through August with outreach focusing on the unique suitability of the high-performing, cost-effective IDIS Total Solution to meet the widely varying (and, at times, highly specific) needs of campuses, large and small, in the Americas. “There’s no question there has never been a greater time of challenge or urgency when it comes to campus safety and the protection of our nation’s students, faculty, staff and others,” notes Keith Drummond, Senior Director at IDIS America. “You only have to open a newspaper—or even just talk with the students in your life—to know that challenges to campus safety and security run the gamut from traditionally smaller, more familiar concerns like fights, contraband, and unauthorized movement, to worries about lethal threats like active shooters.“ IDIS Total Solution IDIS promise to meet any surveillance need, of any size or complexity with high performing technology" Keith further states, “When you throw in the inherent complication of maintaining full situational awareness in a dynamic campus and the requirements most schools have to build and maintain security infrastructure—often funded with limited taxpayer, grants, or donor dollars—in the most fiscally responsible way possible, campus safety and security professionals must balance a great deal as part of keeping their charge—and no two campuses are ever alike. That’s where we believe IDIS and it’s adaptable, scalable, and complete end-to-end total solution for both analog and IP surveillance makes the difference.” Drummond also points to the IDIS promise to “meet any surveillance need, of any size or complexity” with high performing technology and a low total cost of ownership as key to the company’s unique value proposition for American campuses. The company’s flagship DirectIP range of IP solutions, award-winning for its true plug and play ease of installation and use, next-generation features, high degree of interoperability, forward- and backward-compatibility guarantees, and long (often longest) industry warranties—all with a cost-free, full featured VMS included and total lack of recurring licensing fees. IDIS has debuted a powerful suite of features to bring critical failover capabilities and peace-of-mind to users of the company’s innovative technology offerings. Bringing together existing, improved, and new failover features, IDIS addresses multiple threats to crucial video surveillance operations with IDIS Critical Failover, a collection of five capabilities that strengthen the fault tolerance of your CCTV infrastructure. “If any part of video surveillance infrastructure fails, it’s critical to first recognize the failure and then initiate appropriate alternative or redundant technologies to minimize loss of data. Full redundancy of every component in your infrastructure is prohibitively expensive and adds unnecessary complication in most cases, and manual recognition and resolution costs precious time and risks gaps in footage,” notes Keith Drummond, Senior Director, IDIS America, “IDIS Critical Failover reduces both of these issues, through a multi-layered collection of capabilities spread across the devices in your infrastructure.” IDIS Critical Failover Features IDIS Critical Failover consists of five parts: Temporary Smart Failover, Smart Failover, Storage Redundancy, NVR Failover, and Dual Power Supply. “If any part of video surveillance infrastructure fails, it’s critical to first recognize the failure and then initiate appropriate alternative or redundant technologies" If you experience a problem with network instability, Temporary Smart Failover starts recording to an internal recording session buffer (of at least 60MB), ensuring there is no break in the data being sent to the NVR. For longer network issues, such as a complete failure of the link between the camera and the NVR, Smart Failover takes over. When the IP camera and NVR become disconnected, the camera instantly begins recording to an internal SD card. It records at the original quality until half of the SD card is filled up and then adjusts the quality to ensure a full 24 hours of footage is captured on just a 32GB card. H.265 cameras add support for SDXC cards, with a theoretical limit of 2TB. Once the network link is restored, all of the data is automatically transferred to the NVR, leaving no incident unrecorded. Storage Redundancy exists inside the NVR (DR-8364D) in the form of native RAID 1 or RAID 5 support. With RAID 1 support, the NVR stores two identical copies of the data, so if one disk fails, the data is retrieved from the second one. RAID 5 stores the data and additional parity data in separate locations, providing the same redundancy, but more efficiently than RAID 1. NVR Failover protects against the failure of the entire NVR, which a standby NVR. Both the primary and standby NVR continuously monitor one another to quickly switch to the functioning NVR during a failure, reducing the risk of data loss and decreasing failover response times. Finally, Native Dual Power Supplies (DR-8364D) provides a redundant power supply in case the first one fails, increasing uptime and reducing the risk of data loss.
IDIS has named Mikal Ranneklev as the company’s regional sales manager for the north central region, further building out its North American sales operation, as the global surveillance powerhouse continues to aggressively expand its regional footprint. IDIS Installations At La Familia Insurance IDIS retail solutions have been well received in the Americas by storefront businesses such as La Familia Insurance, a rapidly expanding insurance provider offering auto, home, renters, and commercial insurance in the state of Texas. Faced with a multi-site security requirement, La Familia needed video surveillance cameras capable of capturing wide angle views both in broad daylight and in pitch black night, as well as the ability to capture multiple views to cover continuous cash-handling throughout the day. IDIS equipped La Familia’s expanding locations with cutting edge surveillance technology; initial installations consisted of 10+ NVRs and 75+ cameras, including more than 10 IDIS 5MP Super Fisheye Cameras. Ahead of the exhibition, IDIS America Senior Director, Keith Drummond, remarked, “All of us at IDIS America are very excited to be returning for our second appearance at NRF PROTECT and to continue the celebration of our 20 years of innovation in the video surveillance industry. Since our debut in the Americas, IDIS has been constantly improving upon our surveillance offerings for the retail industry and we look forward to showcasing our new and innovative solutions in Washington, D.C. this June.”
For all its value in the security market, one has to wonder: How much captured video is actually used for security? Among hours and hours of video, only brief segments here or there are ever actually viewed or used for security applications, such as to review an incident or to provide evidence in court. But what about all that other video, much of it stored for 30 or 90 or 120 days or longer? Does it have to be merely a costly consequence of providing the security benefits of video? Not necessarily, based on what I heard from several exhibitors on the second day of ISC West 2017. Video Surveillance Beyond Security Turns out all that video has many potential uses, and in fact represents a huge opportunity for the video surveillance market to expand its value to business operations beyond security. Information from video can provide valuable insights into business operations. Analyzing it (using new tools highlighted at ISC) can provide metrics to guide business strategy, reveal customer trends, fine-tune business processes, etc. “Video surveillance as a comprehensive ‘value add’ is coming into its own before our eyes,” said Keith Drummond, Senior Director, IDIS America. “More and more people are seeing and experiencing the benefits of video beyond initial security applications. Modern analytics enable business intelligence with real-world impact on the bottom line in the retail vertical and beyond. The potential of video beyond security has never been more apparent.” IDIS And March Networks’ New Surveillance Additions Celebrating 20 years in business, IDIS introduced new additions and enhancements to its total solution at this year’s ISC West. They include a complete lineup of H.265 IP cameras and NVRs, a new 12 megapixel super fisheye camera, new low-light and long-distance solutions, enhancements to PTZ controls, and a new retail analytics/business intelligence suite. A 64-channel NVR delivers enterprise-level performance at an NVR price. More and more people are seeing and experiencing the benefits of video beyond initial security applications Developments in the market may be opening new opportunities, but reaping the benefits of those opportunities must begin with identifying a customer’s need. “On the product development side, we should work backwards,” suggests Dan Cremins, Global Leader of Product Management, March Networks. “As a customer, identify what problems you are trying to solve and work backwards from there.” March Networks announced a strategic relationship to use Oncam’s 360-degree camera technology for applications in the banking and retail verticals. For automated teller machines (ATMs), March Networks is announcing a new camera that is a lens/sensor connected by a cable to an encoder; the small size enables it to be installed even in new smaller ATMs; features include high dynamic range (HDR) and 3 megapixel resolution. Finally, March Network’s new 9000 series NVR uses a Linux operating system, provides double the video throughput (6 Mbps) and offers a choice of 32, 48 or 64 channels. Cloud-based Access Control The impact of new developments on integrators was another theme I heard today at the show. A shift is afoot in the market to cloud-based access control, and integrators and dealers need to be educated to overcome resistance to the changing business models; so says Mitchell Kane, President of Vanderbilt Industries. The fundamental shift is from high-margin “project-based” business to lower-cost installation (with less immediate profit) of hosted solutions, combined with recurring monthly revenue that customers pay for cloud services. Less immediate gratification (i.e., lower commissions) might discourage salesmen from embracing the change, but it is a necessary transition to adapt to the new business climate and to the increasing popularity of cloud systems. There is also some integrator resistance to another big trend – mobile credentials, says Kane. In this case, the concern is that mobile credentials are provided directly from the manufacturer. Integrators are concerned that end-users “being exposed” to manufacturers could result in their being eliminated from the equation, he notes. The scope of integrators’ work is also narrowing in some instances, says Kane. For example, today’s network-based and easy-to-install systems may lead end users to buy the systems direct from a manufacturer and then install the systems themselves (such as by their in-house information technology [IT] department). It is another argument for the value of RMR to help integrators offset revenue losses. The integrator should, in any case, avoid being a barrier to implementation of new technology approaches, says Kane. Vanderbilt ACT365 And Arecont Omni G3 Vanderbilt has a new cloud-based access control system – ACT365 – which has two hardware components, a single device for each door, and a video management system with a Terabyte of storage that supports four IP cameras. The system is hosted in the Azure cloud. There is a strong diagnostics package on the installation page, which ensures simplified installation. Arecont Vision’s SNAPstream Technology can be used to greatly reduce bandwidth and lower storage requirements Making life easier for integrators has been a focus for Arecont Vision. For example, remote focus on its cameras simplifies installation; a technician doesn’t have to stand precariously on a ladder with a laptop to adjust the focus. Now Arecont Vision’s SurroundVideo Omni G3 offers remote motorized positioning of the four individual sensors inside the camera. There are built-in presets providing 180-degree, 360-degree or 270-degree views, and two additional programmable presets. The 12- or 20-megapixel all-in-one omni-directional camera provides easier initial installation and more flexibility for the end user to change camera configurations. For example, a stadium owner could create one preset combination of sensor positions for a sporting event and a second combination for a concert, and then switch back and forth as needed. Arecont SNAPstream Technology Arecont Vision’s SNAPstream Technology can be used to greatly reduce bandwidth and lower storage requirements. Because Arecont Vision cameras have Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, the new SNAPstream can also be deployed to every existing Arecont Vision camera in the field, simply using a firmware upgrade. The company has also cracked the code on cybersecurity; the megapixel cameras do not have operating systems that can be repurposed for use in cyberattacks. Arecont has also repositioned its product line into “good, better and best” categories. Booth traffic held up well on the second day of the show, with one more day to go and plenty left to see.

City’s deployment of Edge360 and powerful IDIS mobile video surveillance solutions helped maximize security during the festival Global surveillance powerhouse IDIS and innovative homeland security solutions provider Edge360 have announced the successful proof of concept of the companies’ mobile Public Safety Video System during the City of Houston’s 2016 Freedom Over Texas Festival. The successful deployment of the system by the City of Houston over the 4th of July weekend further confirms the nation’s fourth largest city’s place as a homeland security innovator, with a demonstrated commitment to public safety and the security of both residents and visitors. Public Safety Video System In partnership with the City of Houston, Edge360 deployed their mobile Public Safety Video System, featuring next-generation surveillance technology from IDIS. A rugged and nimble surveillance tool, the system is purpose-built to assist public safety personnel in the coverage of urban events and incidents, especially those of a traditionally chaotic and changing nature. While traditional surveillance set-ups for major community and large sporting events face common challenges related to their dynamic nature, changes within venues—such as the erection of tents, banners, balloons, portable toilets, and vendors—can limit viewing options and unpredictably alter security landscapes. The Edge360 and IDIS mobile system allows for quick and enhanced surveillance that adapts easily and quickly to altered environments, including from interior perspectives. Additionally, added radio frequency noise, which is common in such situations, can create an environment “hostile” to a traditional video system’s responsiveness, a risk that is successfully mitigated by Edge360’s hybrid and wireless technology innovations. Agile And Powerful Surveillance Innovation The City of Houston’s commitment to latest-generation technology and methods in the service of maximum safety and security was easily matched by Edge360 and IDIS’s commitment to agile, powerful surveillance innovation. “The mobile Public Safety Video System provided by Edge360 and enhanced with IDIS surveillance technology really delivered for the people of Houston this weekend,” noted Jack C. Hanagriff of the Houston Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security. “Houston is one of the country’s most dynamic urban environments and our commitment to the safety and security of our people at all times is second to none. This solution successfully delivered a powerful ‘plug-and-play’ video network capable of cellular or wireless backhaul and one that did not interfere with existing video networks or other wireless devices in use.” “Importantly, this solution did not tax more than typical city resources commonly found in most urban communities, and the remote camera control via web browsers greatly enhanced situational awareness for our decision makers.” Addressing Concerns For Municipal Environments “This solution did not tax more than typical city resources and the remote camera control via web browsers greatly enhanced situational awareness for our decision makers.” Scott Frigaard, Vice President of Edge360, stated, “We’re pleased to see the deployment of Edge360’s powerful mobile Public Safety Video System has so successfully proven the value of our technology in the real world environment of the dynamic 2016 Freedom Over Texas Festival. The Edge360 system, built with IDIS technology, addresses ever more urgent concerns for municipal environments as never before. We look forward to partnering further with both IDIS, the provider of key next-generation technology essential to our offering’s performance and success, and the storied City of Houston for future gatherings and major sporting events, such as the upcoming Super Bowl.” “Sometimes surveillance is about more than the numbers,” added Keith Drummond, Senior Director at IDIS America. “There is nothing more important than the safety of our friends and neighbours in an increasingly chaotic world. IDIS is proud to partner with Edge360, allowing them to leverage our most powerful surveillance technologies to keep the people of Houston safe and secure as they gather together to celebrate as a community. We look forward to future projects and to doing our part to make the world a better place.”
IDIS technology ensures a robust safety and security environment for both patients and staff John W. Antonetti, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon, and Clinique Dallas Plastic Surgery have selected IDIS technology to provide an enhanced, state-of-the-art security experience for patients and staff. IDIS Surveillance Solution IDIS worked with Alarm Integrations, a PSX Inc. security company, to develop and install a surveillance system to enhance staff safety and accountability, increase the practice’s already exceptional quality assurance, and further enhance the physical security of the practice’s patients. Recognizing Dr. Antonetti’s ever increasing status as a world-class plastic surgeon and in expectation that high demand for the quality of care he and the practice provide, IDIS and Alarm Integrations crafted a solution that is easy to maintain and easily scaled up for future expansions without difficulty, unexpected cost, or security disruptions. “IDIS’s latest-generation solutions and forward-thinking approach aligned perfectly with Dr. Antonetti’s own reputation for modern, forward-thinking approaches to care,” noted Keith Drummond, Senior Director of Sales for IDIS America. “The selection of an IDIS security solution offers yet another differentiator for one of the Dallas-area’s most respected plastic surgery practices.” Modern Security Approach Dr. Antonetti agreed, “Delivering the best in forward-thinking and intuitive care is central to our practice and we expect the same from those we work with. IDIS is the definition of a modern, next-generation security and surveillance company and has enhanced our safety and security as a result.”With IDIS’s quick installation and seamless integration, the practice is already seeing benefits, including increased patient security and peace of mind, greater accountability and quality control in patient care, lower cost of ownership, and reduced requirements for system maintenance (and associated downtime).
Coming into ISC West, many in the industry had expected a renewed push toward use of mobile credentials (contained on smartphones, for example) instead of cards for access control. HID Global didn’t disappoint. A highlight of the second day of the show was a press conference in which HID Global announced new elements of its initiative to lead the industry into use of mobile credentials. Uses Of Smart Phone Credentials For Identity Management HID already provides SEOS mobile credentials, and the company foresees continuing movement into areas such as use of smart phones to store secure citizen IDs, cloud-based user authentication, and involvement in the coming Internet of Things (IoT). HID wants to lead the next phase of the mobility journey, while educating the market on the convenience and value of mobile credentialing. Key to the success of mobile credentials is to balance the need for convenience and the need for security, and to provide a smooth upgrade path. The company wants to build on innovation, to expand applications and use cases for mobile, to leverage and expand partnerships, and to develop and implement a solution with connected products and complemented by services. In short, they seek to deliver end-to-end trust. HID Mobile Access Solution The HID Mobile Access Solution provides security with the convenience of using a smartphone as an access credential, with cloud-based management services powered by SEOS. Announced at the press conference were support for Android Wear and Apple Watch devices, and software development kits (SDKs) for third party integration. Also announced was a new strategic partnership between HID Global and NXP’s SmartMX-based secure element devices. Through the collaboration, NXP and HID Global aim to enable the use of wearable devices to open electronic locks at commercial buildings, hotels and workplaces in the future. Additionally, NXP and HID Global are cooperating on a broad range of opportunities to expand the adoption of secure access to more applications and use cases. HID’s goID platform enables secure IDs to be loaded directly over-the-air onto a smartphone. Government IDs around the world will be transitioning to smart phones in some cases. Mobile Security System Management And Data Access There are other roles for smartphones highlighted at ISC West, too. More and more manufacturers are introducing mobile apps that provide end users access to the data from their various systems - whether video, access control, intrusion or whatever - using a smartphone. For example, access control company Galaxy Control introduced two apps at ISC West, each available for Apple iOS or Android formats. One app, called PersonPoint, allows authorized users to activate and de-activate cardholders remotely, with the added benefit of viewing e-mail activity reports. DoorPoint is the other app, which allows users to remotely lock, unlock and pulse doors, view door status and view activity report data. In an emergency situation, the app also allows security personnel to activate and reset crisis modes if necessary and to view current crisis mode status. Hands-Free Identification Galaxy Control also announced a new integration with SRI Identity; an iris recognition biometrics provides dependable, hands-free and touchless identification at a low price point. The biometric system interfaces with Galaxy like any other reader, while providing higher security. SRI Identity’s IOM (Identity on the Move) Access Control Tablet is a viable option to replace card readers in new or existing access systems, and provides advantages over traditional readers. Arecont Vision announced it MegaVideo Flex tethered camera line, providinga variety of resolution options, including 1.2MP, 1080p, 3MP, or 5MP Growing Popularity Of Analog HD There was video to see on the second day of the show, too, and not all of it was IP. More cameras with analog HD are now being used, and, as of ISC West, the various analog HD (1080p) formats - AHD, HD-CVI, HD-TVI - can now be combined into a single system. Advantages of analog HD include lower costs, no compression or latency and the ability to use existing infrastructures of coax cabling - just replace the cameras and the DVRs. The technology is already popular around the world, and manufacturers expect it to increase in the United States. Korean company Nextchip is at ISC West to help spread the word about AHD and to educate the market on the technology’s capabilities. Nextchip has been coming to ISC for eight years; they make the chips that go into cameras that use AHD technology - they say it is the defacto standard based on their having the largest market share. Nextchip sells to various camera manufacturers; a combination image processor and transmission chip inside the camera interfaces of a matching receiver chip installed in an analog HD DVR. More than 60 percent of the company’s business is in China - they have a branch in Shenzhen. The overall message: IP video may be popular, but there are alternatives (including AHD) that might be ideal for some systems. On the IP video side, Arecont Vision announced its MegaVideo Flex tethered camera line, providing a variety of resolution options, including 1.2MP, 1080p, 3MP, or 5MP. The H.264 remote focus true day/night indoor/outdoor cameras consist of a low-profile camera sensor attached to the main unit using a USB cable up to 40 feet long. There are also optional IR LEDs available for night viewing. Applications include ATMs; there are many new uses for the versatile cameras. IDIS’s Proactive Exhibiting Approach To ISC West Booth traffic held up well on the second day of the show, but at least one exhibitor vowed not to depend on the show being busy in order for his booth to be busy. Keith Drummond, Senior Director of Sales of IP video manufacturer IDIS, says his sales team focused on setting up appointments, including some with end users, in advance of the show. The result is that the IDIS booth had more traffic on the first day of the show this year than for the entire show last year; and the second day appeared to be about 50 percent higher than that, Drummond commented. Since IDIS’ Direct IP technology was introduced to the U.S. market a year ago, the company has made a lot of progress - there are now repeat customers (in addition to future customers). IDIS facilitated introductions between their dealer channel and end users at their booth during ISC West. IDIS has implemented H.265 throughout its systems; they’re ahead of the curve compared to the rest of the industry that has not embraced the new standard as fast. “End-to-end can embrace technology and get it to market faster, and less costly,” says Drummond. Components “know” each other, and performance and functionality are native throughout, which reduces the burden on integrators. IDIS also has a new 64-channel NVR, and is featuring new pan-tilt-zoom capabilities called “rubber band control” and “slingshot control.” With the former, left-clicking on a mouse makes it easy to follow a target, accurately and rapidly, with the target remaining centered in the frame. The “slingshot” control involves clicking and magnifying a spot on a video screen to automatically direct the PTZ to view that location. In general, the features provide smoother and more effective control of PTZs.
Global video surveillance powerhouse IDIS has unveiled a new Full HD 30x Optical Zoom PTZ Camera, a highest-tech surveillance camera featuring game changing Smart UX Controls. These intuitive “slingshot” and “rubber band” style controls deliver exceptional accuracy and ease of use to users, creating an experience unlike any other available on the market. The IDIS 30x PTZ Camera also supports ONVIF and is compatible with a wide range of recording platforms, including DirectIP™ NVRs and the IDIS Solution Suite enterprise-level VMS. IDIS Smart UX Controls “The IDIS Smart UX Controls featured on the new 30x PTZ Camera provide operators with an advanced yet intuitive user interface when compared to conventional PTZ controls,” noted Keith Drummond, Senior Director of Sales for IDIS America. “The smooth and seamless ‘slingshot’ and ‘rubber band’ PTZ controls allow users to easily follow moving objects in real time with ground breaking accuracy by panning images at different speeds and in different directions literally without lifting a finger. “With simple click-and-drag actions, operators can quickly focus on and track specific objects with absolutely no need for multiple clicks to change direction. The quick and simple operation of IDIS Smart UX Controls enables pinpoint accuracy in any given environment, delivering a critical advantage in security environments.” IDIS Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) Technology The IDIS 30x PTZ Camera also provides superb imaging quality. The 30x optical zoom allows users to capture high-quality, detailed images from great distances, and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) functionality provides clear images even under backlit conditions. Day and night ICR delivers a clear subject image from broad daylight to the darkest night. The 30x PTZ Camera also features IDIS digital image stabilization (DIS) technology, reducing the jarring effects from vibrations during recording.
IDIS was a new name in the security market in 2015, and we asked the company to comment on interesting trends in the market at year-end. Here is that discussion. SourceSecurity.com: How did the economy affect the industry in 2015? Keith Drummond, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, IDIS America: The surveillance market had been quite resilient as it relates to the overall economy over the 15 years I have been in the industry, and 2015 has been no different. It seems that regardless of the economic gains or losses over any given period of time, our industry continues to grow at a good to great clip. The demand for surveillance is always there, and the request for the end users and channels are always the same – great technology at a fair total cost, that allows them to run their business more efficiently, effectively and safely. SourceSecurity.com: How was the overall video surveillance market in 2015? Dr. Peter Kim, Senior Director, IDIS Co. Ltd.: 2015 saw the rise of more powerful, integrated, end-to-end offerings that simplify the customer experience at every step in the video surveillance lifecycle. We saw a number of mergers—some expected, others not—that clearly showed a new focus on companies adding and shoring up capabilities, and enhancing the completeness of their offerings to the market. We also saw some notable partnerships, as well. So many aspects of our business (such as cameras, recording, and video management software) are, by definition, interrelated. It’s a natural progression to grow one’s business by completing one’s offering. 2015 also saw expectations normalize regarding the rise and adoption of IP technology, allowing all of us in the industry to appreciate anew how the technology is remaking the industry slowly but surely. There’s a lot of innovation continuing to go on in the IP space, and it’s rolling out in a way that is allowing for credible evaluation and adoption of the best the industry has to offer in a smart way. At the same time, 2015 saw a growing interest in HD over coaxial cable, with the image quality over coaxial catching up sufficiently to make full-HD over coaxial an increasingly valid choice for those seeking to leverage existing installations. HD over coaxial cable is an area that might not be getting a lot of attention, but will be a real space to watch in 2016 SourceSecurity.com: Let’s look ahead to 2016: What notable trends do you see playing out in the new year and what will be their impact? Kim: With all the appropriate focus on the excitement of IP technologies, UHD, and the chasing of groundbreaking specifications at every turn, HD over coaxial cable is an area that might not be getting a lot of attention, but will be a real space to watch in 2016. HD over coax has been gaining momentum for a bit in the most budget-conscious segments; however, the game is getting more interesting because the technology is getting better at higher-MP-than-FHD (2MP) — though we may see tradeoffs in either distance or frame rates, meaning now you can potentially achieve things over coaxial cable that was previously only afforded by IP technologies. When HD-SDI came out, it overpromised somewhat and, in reality, had very little impact on our industry. However, many of the factors that made HD-SDI underwhelming, such as distance limitations, have been resolved with latest generation analog HD technologies, with HD-TVI creating additional and credible pathways to HD quality for many. Now you can potentiallyachieve things over coaxialcable that was previouslyonly afforded by IPtechnologies Don’t get me wrong; IP is the industry’s future, and will enable and implement many exciting things. Still, there is a lot of analog and existing coaxial cable out there, and as HD over analog technology has caught up to its early promise, there’s a lot of fast adoption for HD over Coax technologies such as HD-TVI. This will make it an increasingly important part of the mix in the near term, and a definite trend worth keeping an eye out for. The over-designing and over-engineering of solutions will also be worth watching in 2016. We’re at a key point in the evolution of our industry where the pace of technological change and possibility is as exciting as it has ever been, and designing solutions beyond customer requirements is a natural risk as technology matures. Ultimately, it’s always about a balanced approach that will best benefit the customer, which in many cases may be a mix-and-match of innovation and the leveraging of existing technologies. It’s very possible that the market won’t be as receptive to over-designed systems that are ultimately too expensive or hard to maintain and replace versus platforms that work seamlessly across technology and provide varied pathways to customers to achieve their security and surveillance goals in affordable ways. SourceSecurity.com: Who will be the “winners” and who will be the “losers”? Kim: It’s really all about relationships moving forward for our industry, both internally and externally. The winners moving forward will be those who recognize and craft a direct and strategic internal relationship between the real-time needs of end-users and their internal R&D/product development. This means moving beyond chasing theoretically impressive specs and capabilities just to have them and instead delivering powerful analytics, third-party integrations, and the kind of technical compatibility and ease of use that increase value, not complication, alongside legitimate technical innovation. Business intelligence is a specific focal point, as it focuses on the implication and trends of analyzed data, beyond a simple quest for accuracy. Things like facial recognition, license plate recognition, and similar technologies are opening up opportunities and funding from departments other than the traditional security/asset protection department. Technologies like facial recognition and license plate recognition are opening up new opportunities and sources of funding The same is true with external relationships: those who continue to craft strategic relationships and partnerships will extend the value and power of their offerings to customers, be most responsive to the market, and clear “winners” as a result. Ultimately, everyone wins when solutions offer the greatest ability to mix and match, scale, and grow simply and flexibly with requirements, without driving up costs prohibitively. SourceSecurity.com: Could you please comment briefly on your company’s successes and challenges in 2015 and looking ahead to 2016. Drummond: 2015 was clearly an exciting year for IDIS, as it was the year our brand business completed its global rollout with the launch of IDIS America at ISC West in April. It was a process that included the opening of a new regional headquarters, warehouse, and training and demonstration space near Dallas, Texas, and the build out of an impressive team of technical and sales talent to cover the Americas. Technically, the launch of IDIS’s powerful new Fish Eye camera (DC-Y1513) and the development of an industry leading next-generation DirectIP™ NVR for 2016 (with support for H.265 and UHD/4K) were real highlights, showing off IDIS’s strong suits, market-responsive innovation and product engineering. We also announced several partnerships and successful integrations this year, which serve the many needs of our industry in specific and needed ways. One only needs to opena newspaper or turn onthe news to know themandate for increasedsecurity never sleeps The challenge we’re most excited about heading into 2016 is the continued building of the already strong market recognition for the IDIS brand business, continuing to link the exceptional reputation and industry regard we’ve cultivated as a top OEM/ODM for nearly two decades to our powerful, current branded offering. SourceSecurity.com: What unrealized potential or other opportunities face our market at year-end and looking ahead to 2016? Kim: It’s always a good time to be in the security market, because of the critical importance our industry plays in keeping people, assets, and information safe and secure. The industry and the work we do are meaningful and needed. All economic considerations aside, one only needs to open a newspaper or turn on the news to know that the mandate for increased security, including through enhanced technologies that allow for smarter, more expansive, and less expensive security solutions, never sleeps. In terms of potential and opportunity for surveillance providers, mission critical infrastructure planning and protection will continue to be a growing requirement and one where high quality surveillance solutions can play an essential part. From a technological standpoint, security and surveillance manufacturing continues to hold near unlimited promise. We are on the verge of an explosion in chip computation power, most assuredly, and how that will exactly manifest in terms of our industry is not yet fully known, but it is clearly exciting. In terms of available and potential technology, we are very much in the right moment in history. In 2016, it will be even more true that “imagination is our only limitation,” and we will have a tremendous opportunity before us to continue to figure out how to leverage next generation technology in ways that are powerful, practically useful, and, of course, affordable.
