An aging employee population and the influx of a new generation of workers and customers is driving change in the physical security industry. Millennials – those born in the 1980s and mid-1990s – are especially impacting how the industry operates, the technologies it produces, and the customers it serves. This tech-savvy generation grew up with the Internet at their fingertips. They embrace innovation in all its glory and expect it to play a seamless role in their lives – and work. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: How are millennials changing how security systems are designed, installed and/or operated?
One impact of Chinese companies entering the physical security market has been an erosion in product pricing, creating what has been called the "race to the bottom." However, political forces and cybersecurity concerns have presented new challenges for Chinese companies. Adding cybersecurity increases costs, and the addition of more functionality to edge devices is another trend that has impacted product pricing. We asked this week's Expert Panel Roundtable: Has price erosion ended (or slowed down) in the security market?
Statistically speaking, incidents of terrorism are unlikely to impact most businesses and institutions. However, the mere possibility of worst-case-scenario attacks is enough to keep security professionals awake at night. Compounding the collective anxiety is the minute-by-minute media coverage when an attack does occur. The immediacy of the shared experience of global tragedy impacts us all – including security system decision-makers. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: How is the rise in terrorism impacting the physical security market?
The year ahead holds endless promise for the physical security industry, and much of that future will be determined by which technologies the industry embraces. The menu of possibilities is long – from artificial intelligence to the Internet of Things to the cloud and much more – and each technology trend has the potential to transform the market in its own way. We tapped into the collective expertise of our Expert Panel Roundtable to answer this question: What technology trend will have the biggest impact on the security market in 2019?
Cybersecurity continues to be a major theme in the physical security industry, but effective cybersecurity comes at a cost. Higher cost is contrary to another major trend in the market: lower product pricing, which some have characterized as a ‘race to the bottom’. Chinese manufacturers, whose products tend to have lower prices, have been the target of cybersecurity concerns and even a government ban. So what is the overall impact of cybersecurity on pricing trends in video products? We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: Are cybersecurity concerns slowing down the ‘race to the bottom’ (i.e., the dominance of lower-cost cameras)?
The concept of how security systems can contribute to the broader business goals of a company is not new. It seems we have been talking about benefits of security systems beyond “just” security for more than a decade. Given the expanding role of technologies in the market, including video and access control, at what point is the term “security” too restrictive to accurately describe what our industry does? We asked the Expert Panel Roundtable for their responses to this premise: Is the description “security technology” too narrow given the broader application possibilities of today’s systems? Why?
News mentions
IDIS features twice in the 2021 OSPA security awards, with shortlisting in two key categories: Outstanding Security Equipment Manufacturer and Outstanding In House M anager. Following a highly competitive selection round, the finalists have been praised by the organizers for making a significant impact at the highest level within the industry. “The OSPAs are growing year on year and really have become the ultimate accolade for everyone working in security, whether a buyer or supplier,” says founder of the OSPAs, Professor Martin Gill, describing the 2021 awards as a bumper year. “With such stiff competition, I can honestly say that every finalist is a winner.” High performance surveillance IDIS’s shortlisting as manufacturer of the year recognizes the company’s commitment to delivering affordable, end-to-end video solutions that give end-users and systems integrators everything they need for trouble-free, high performance surveillance. A national center of excellence for children and young people with mental health needs has been secured by a comprehensive security system from IDIS, the largest in country video surveillance manufacturer in South Korea. The £7 million refurbishment of Austen House, a 14-bed forensic hospital in Hampshire run by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, prioritized keeping both staff and patients safe from harm, given their specialized needs. Security systems integrator As the sole specialist National Health Service (NHS) unit of its kind in southern England, its refurbishment means vulnerable young people and their families no longer have to travel hundreds of miles to receive vital support. Video surveillance was key to allow incidents to be investigated and care practices to be monitored and improved. The solution had to cover all social and communal areas with no blind spots, be easy for non-specialist staff to use, and would have to comply with NHS cybersecurity requirements. Specialist security systems integrator ISD Tech selected IDIS technology as the best value and most robust solution, and one that would be the quickest and least disruptive to install. Outdated security setup The enhanced video coverage improves both standards of care and accountability Working with main contractor Kier Construction, ISD Tech and IDIS replaced an outdated security setup with an affordable cybersecure system which is easy to operate and maintain. It allows caregivers a complete overview of all internal and external communal areas at Austen House, including education facilities, music and sensory spaces, a gym and an art studio, as well as higher-risk isolation rooms. The enhanced video coverage improves both standards of care and accountability. It provides a complete record of events at the facility, making it easy for incidents to be investigated and video evidence to be provided, should it be required. Active tampering alarms Almost 100 IDIS 12MP Super Fisheye cameras, plus a mix of 5MP bullet and PTZ cameras, connected to 32-channel NVRs guarantee evidential-standard video coverage with a 360º view of all communal areas, a choice of 6 view modes and the ability to dewarp footage after the event. The 5MP bullet and PTZ cameras provide 24-hour coverage of the multi-use games area, gardens, car parks and perimeter. Built-in IR enables night-time image capture at distances of up to 30m, and the cameras enable intelligent functions such as active tampering alarms, motion detection, auto-tracking, and trip zones. All the IDIS cameras benefit from true DirectIP® plug-and-play set-up, which allowed the ISD Tech engineers to complete their work ahead of schedule. The ‘one-click’ set-up is faster and eliminates the cybersecurity risks associated with manual password entry. Local area networks IDIS Smart Failover protection ensures 24/7 continued recording, even during network instability or drop-out IDIS Smart Failover protection ensures 24/7 continued recording, even during network instability or drop-out. And, crucially, the Trust can link the new system to its local area networks without increasing the risk of hacking, thanks to IDIS’s use of proprietary software, which is inherently cybersecure. “Our upgraded IDIS video solution makes it easy for our clinical teams to review incidents quickly and work with external investigators whenever required,” said Tracey Edwards, Head of Security at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. “It’s not just an important tool for improving patient care, it allows us to maintain full public confidence and accountability.” Supporting clinical care Nicky Stokes, Managing Director of ISD Tech, commented: “We were impressed by the consultative approach of IDIS right from the initial design and planning, through installation to commissioning, and the ongoing support that they provide both to ISD Tech and the Trust. IDIS technology even helped speed up the installation so that we could deliver the project ahead of time.” IDIS Europe Sales Director Jamie Barnfield added: “This is the 4th major project that IDIS has completed for Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, and it is part of one of the biggest refurbishments of its kind ever undertaken in the NHS. Not only is our video tech enhancing safety and security for patients and staff, it also supports clinical care and rehabilitation, which benefits the most vulnerable members of our community.”
Look who’s talking about the top issues in the physical security industry in 2019. Our website’s Expert Panel Roundtable discussions in 2019 reflected some of the most timely and important topics in the industry. The very most-clicked-on Expert Panel Roundtable discussion in 2019 was about the year before – reviewing what caused disruptions in 2018. The second most popular was about 2019, the year ahead. Other hot topics that made the Top-10 list of roundtable discussions included what makes a good security salesperson, the need for greater cybersecurity awareness, and how millennials are changing the industry. Here is a roundup of the Top 10 Expert Panel Roundtable discussions posted in 2019, along with a “sound bite” from each discussion and links back to the full articles. Thanks to everyone who contributed to Expert Panel Roundtable in 2019 (including the quotable panelists named and linked below). 1. What caused the most disruption in 2018 in the physical security space? “The industry is in the midst of a dynamic technology revolution, and we are seeing increased use of security solutions that leverage machine-based learning, artificial intelligence, and robotics. This past year, the market embraced these emerging technologies, with a myriad of solutions now being embedded with these capabilities, including IP cameras, access control systems, security robots, and drones.” – Travis Deyle, Cobalt Robotics 2. What technology trend will have the biggest impact on physical security in 2019? “IoT (Internet of Things) will continue to make us more efficient. We’re already seeing the increased integration of IoT devices into enterprise-level solutions. The rise in city-living is also putting pressure on infrastructure, so it will become increasingly important for the truly smart and safe city to move beyond a vision into reality.” – Jamie Barnfield, IDIS 3. What are the security challenges of hospitals and the healthcare industry? “Preventing security incidents is a priority and a challenge for healthcare directors. Traditionally, the success of a healthcare facility’s safety program has been equated to the number of issues that warranted a response; though, the simple number of emergency responses is not helpful in preventing the same situations from occurring again.” – Julie Brown, Johnson Controls 4. What characteristics do salespeople require in the physical security industry? “To be a good salesperson, you must understand each customer’s needs and help them solve their problems. In physical security, this need is typically some kind of risk mitigation – guarding themselves and their organizations against threats, danger and liability. This makes the conversation more fraught than if you were selling a business product such as lighting, HR software or insurance, since ultimately you are talking about people’s lives and livelihoods.” – Dave Whitis, Boon Edam 5. How does security technology make our schools safer? “IP-based physical security solutions can help deliver safer environments so that students, staff, and faculty can focus on learning. Video surveillance provides a live and recorded visual representation of what’s happening across a school and can readily be called upon to access important information during an investigation. Electronic access control on doors and barriers not only regulates who goes where, but also provides protection for property and assets.” – Terry Schulenberg, Genetec 6. Is greater awareness helping to increase cybersecurity? “On a daily basis, we hear of widely publicized cybersecurity incidents which affect our customer’s businesses, peace of mind, and assets. This new world is one the physical security industry has not been familiar with. What follows these well-publicized events is frustration and confusion, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. Confusion then leads to application of ineffective security tools or, worse, inaction.” – Drew Alexander, STANLEY Security 7. What security markets are likely to embrace AI? “Transportation seems to be the market that could benefit the most from embracing artificial intelligence. As it relates to people tracking, AI could single out deviating behavior, such as someone walking against the flow of rush-hour traffic, and in turn could initiate a real-time response so authorities can determine whether or not intervening is necessary.” – Per Björkdahl, ONVIF 8. How are Millennials changing the security industry? “Over the last few years, we’ve seen the Millennial generation have a profound impact on the security industry, and this is largely due to the fact that those born in this time period have a very knowledgeable and in-depth experience with technology. Millennials are accustomed to smart devices, automation and at-your-fingertips accessibility, which has created new and unfamiliar demands when it comes to security systems and solutions.” – Ron Virden, ACRE 9. What are the mainstream uses for thermal cameras? “Thermal cameras have been the go-to solution for perimeter protection applications for decades. This year, we’re seeing more integrations of thermal cameras with other solutions like radar to improve redundancy, long-range detection and alarm verification for airports and other large sites. Thanks to new technology partnerships and thermal offerings, customers are seeing the value of thermal beyond traditional use cases.” – Fredrik Wallberg, FLIR Systems 10. How do software improvements drive physical security? “Software improvements ultimately drive greater interoperability among technology partners and system integration in physical security solutions. From a surveillance standpoint, software is also increasingly used to enhance system performance and overall longevity by identifying anomalies. For example, to ensure video data is preserved and not lost, customers are using health monitoring software on surveillance hard drives.” – Jessica Burton, Seagate Technology
IDIS has teamed up with integration partner ISD Tech to support the Men’s Shed community group in Church Crookham and Fleet with the donation of a state-of-the-art video monitoring solution. The donation is part of the IDIS ‘Create a Better World” campaign that has run on company’s social media channels since the start of the year to support a global commitment to enhance safety and security for social welfare projects and non-profit community organizations. The system, supplied and installed for free, is protecting a fully equipped new workshop, built with National Lottery funding and opened on the 22nd September 2019. IDIS NVRs, IP bullet cameras and domes with IR capability, now provide 24/7 video coverage of the new facility, inside and out, helping to protect high value power tools and other equipment. “The workshop is in quite a secluded location and it houses high value items, so it needs watching over out-of-hours,” explains Nicky Stokes, MD of ISD Tech. Video solution “We were delighted to provide this IDIS video solution to enable the volunteers who manage the site to receive alerts on their phones, and to view footage, if ever there’s an attempted intrusion or problem with vandalism.” The Church Crookham and Fleet Men’s Shed, is one of more than 520 across the UK helping to reduce isolation, particularly among older men, and supporting them as they contribute their knowledge and practical skills to local good causes – everything from building library shelves for primary schools, to making bird boxes for conservation groups, says Chairman Alan Walker. Research has warned about the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on health and wellbeing “We have 25 regularly active ‘shedders’ meeting twice a week and, as that number grows, we’ll increase the times that our workshop’ is open. Now, instead of just being old blokes tinkering away in isolation, we can have a joke and work together – in many ways it replicates the working environment." For a long time, research has warned about the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on health and wellbeing, with millions of people reporting feeling lonely on a daily basis. Video surveillance equipment Men’s Sheds have emerged as a practical way of tackling the problem, particularly for older men who find it more difficult to build social connections – although the organization welcomes members of all ages and genders. Group members meet to work on projects – fixing things, making things – to share tips and simply to enjoy each other’s company. Alan Walker, says more than 45 projects have already been completed by the group, and thanks to the IDIS video solution, both the ongoing work and the tools can be stored safely out-of-hours while the workshop is unoccupied. IDIS is Korea’s pioneer in-country video surveillance equipment manufacturer and, as it continues to expand in markets globally, the company is committed to supporting community initiatives and charity work, particularly efforts focused on mental health and wellbeing. “We were really pleased to help Men’s Shed with our video technology,” explains Jamie Barnfield, Sales Director, IDIS Europe. "This is a great community group, not only concerned with the wellbeing of their own members but also supporting the wider community around them with the projects they work on.” Surveillance technology James Min, Managing Director, IDIS Europe, noted: “Since IDIS was founded over two decades ago our corporate mission has been to develop technology that makes the world a safer and more secure place. And while we have witnessed giant leaps forward in surveillance technology, our ‘Create a Better World’ campaign is leveraging those innovations to benefit charitable causes that are close to the hearts of local staff as well as close to our facilities around the world.”
IDIS has launched its totally cost-free IDIS Dynamic Privacy Masking (IDPM) solution at IFSEC International (stand IF1110 at London’s ExCel) 2019. IDIS now offers a simple answer to the previously labor-intensive – or prohibitively expensive – problem of de-identification in video footage which is being submitted in response to requests for access under The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or for evidential purposes. Protecting privacy with masking GDPR came into play during a challenging time and some users have stopped reporting smaller losses" Last year, GDPR gave the right to any person captured by a video surveillance camera to access a copy of their personal recorded data. But at the same time, companies are required to protect the identity of other individuals who feature in the recorded video, with anonymisation and masking. The same de-identification also needs to be applied when providing video clips to the police and courts for use as evidence. GDPR-Compliance for incident investigations Jamie Barnfield, Sales Director at IDIS Europe, says that many small to medium companies – for example, retailers and eating-out chains - are struggling to manage their recorded video footage. They are under pressure to provide police with GDPR-compliant video for incident investigations, to respond to freedom of information requests from the public, and to supply footage to insurers assessing claims including as slips, trips and falls. In all of these cases the video needs to be redacted, Barnfield points out. “GDPR came into play during a challenging time and some users have stopped reporting smaller losses and petty crimes because of the increased work involved. For others the alternative has been to resort to expensive video cloaking services that charge by the minute, or to use third-party redaction software not budgeted into the running costs of their surveillance operations,” he said. IDIS Dynamic Privacy Masking (IDPM) Solving this problem, IDPM is now available from the IDIS Partners Portal as a direct download. It allows authorized system users to blur sensitives areas and dynamically de-identify faces, vehicles etc. Crucially, IDPM does this automatically for the duration of the clip, even as the object or person moves around the scene. Users can then quickly save video as clips or project files via the IDIS Clip Player which, crucially, does not rely on transcoding to prevent forgery. The integrity of recorded video is already assured with IDIS Chained Fingerprint technologyAs a result, masking can easily be removed later by the authorized user without affecting the integrity of the footage, if that becomes necessary for a subsequent investigation. Users also have options to set passwords and expiration dates, and to control who can access and play video files. IDIS Chained Fingerprint technology The integrity of recorded video is already assured with IDIS Chained Fingerprint technology, which extracts distinctive features of recorded video data to create fingerprints for each frame and then embeds each fingerprint into the data of the next frame, connecting each frame together with the next like a blockchain. “IDPM now gives users a simple, fast and intuitive tool to provide evidence to the police and courts so that theft, abuse and violence against staff can be investigated and criminals brought to justice. At the same time companies can respond, within the stipulated timeframe, to information requests in line with GDPR without additional costs,” added Barnfield.
Korea’s video surveillance provider, IDIS, will be connecting with installers and integrators at The Security Event (Birmingham NEC, 9-11 April, Stand SE68) to explore new opportunities for project partnerships. The company’s focus on working closely with installers delivering more profitable, advanced video surveillance projects has seen its UK sales grow by 78% over the last year. Easy-To-Source Video Solutions IDIS is focusing on helping accredited, specialist video surveillance integrators to fight back" With major contract wins helping to build its reputation and market share, IDIS is concentrating on reducing TCS (Total Cost to Serve) for installers and giving them easy-to-source video solutions that offer more profitable implementations and predictable revenue streams. As security installers face fierce competition and too often cut profit margins to win projects, IDIS is focusing on helping accredited, specialist video surveillance integrators to fight back. Our approach is to partner with the professional installers, giving them superior technology so they can compete on quality and value and win both installs and maintenance contracts,” says James Min, Managing Director, IDIS Europe. Latest Generation Technology At The Security Event IDIS will focus on its latest generation tech – including its best-selling 12MP Super Fisheye camera, the new budget-beating range of cameras and NVRs, the company’s powerful camera technology comprising 5MP/12MP domes and bullets, the award-winning 8MP IR PTZ 31x zoom and DR-6300 and 8300 series of NVRs, the totally license free yet comprehensive IDIS Center VMS and IDIS Dynamic Privacy Masking and new IDIS Deep Learning Analytics. These innovations give customers impressive results and offers installers a real point of difference above cheap, low-spec systems. IDIS technology is forward and backward compatible, is faster to install and easier to maintain – but at the same time is more powerful and robust. Minimizing Risks With installers competing for the most profitable contracts, a major benefit of IDIS tech is that it minimizes the risk of project over-runs adding to costs. For example, IDIS’s true plug-and-play cameras don’t require engineers to manually program each unit with a password – that essential task happens automatically – resulting in a faster finish, no mistakes and no loopholes in network security. Protection Against Data Loss IDIS cameras now protect against loss of video data due to network instabilityAnother great example is that all IDIS cameras now protect against loss of video data due to network instability, with IDIS’s Smart Failover technology now built-in as standard. This ensures that gaps in recording are automatically restored as soon as the connection is re-established, protecting customers in a way that low-quality kit doesn’t, and making maintenance contracts easier and more predictable for installers. IDIS’s industry-best 7-year Ultimate Warranty further cuts the risk of cost over-runs on maintenance contracts. “We are totally focused on helping our installer partners reduce operational costs while supporting them to compete and win new projects,” explains Jamie Barnfield, Sales Director, IDIS Europe. “We are giving them an advantage at every stage, from providing them with better tech to delivering more convenient training, from helping with lead generation to ensuring smooth project delivery and efficient technical support immediately when it is needed.”
The latest HD video technology from IDIS has been chosen by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust for a comprehensive upgrade across their facilities in Hampshire. In one of the largest projects of its kind, the new system will improve safeguarding at a number of sites for patients requiring specialized mental health care in a secure setting. IDIS’s Korean technology is fully network-tested and approved, which means it is secure enough to be linked to the wider NHS network, at any point in the future, giving further options for centralized monitoring and control. Selecting IP CCTV Solution Southern Health wanted a fully managed system, linking all their sites onto their local LAN without the risk of system hacking Because of the sensitive nature of the care being provided, the vulnerability of patients and the risks to staff, it was essential that the video solution was not only network-secure but could be relied on to capture scenes in close detail in all lighting conditions. Southern Health wanted a fully managed system, linking all their sites onto their local LAN without the risk of system hacking, which is a key NHS consideration in selecting any IP CCTV solution. The IDIS equipment was identified as the best for the project following a full proof-of-concept comparison, with equipment set up on site to demonstrate both picture quality and ease of use. Installation Of Cameras And Recorders It replaces a previously installed IP video system, comprising a mix of equipment from different manufacturers, and in comparison, it offers the benefits of lower cost of ownership due to ease of use, simple installation and maintenance combined with the warranty. The first phase of the upgrade has just been completed by fire and security integrator ISD Tech, with an installation at Ravenswood House, Fareham. This phase comprises almost one hundred 12MP vandal-resistant IR Fisheye cameras as well as full HD IR domes, DirectIP H.265 4K recorders, PoE switches and full-HD monitors. The older system at Ravenswood House had been proving to be difficult to use. Recordings could not be easily archived, and image quality was inconsistent, explains Tracey Edwards, Security Manager of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Identifying And Retrieving Recordings Delays in investigations can result in interrupted care delivery and costly disruption, so need to be minimized as much as possible “We had identified gaps in coverage and our efforts to provide a safe environment were being hampered by footage that was often unclear,” Tracey Edwards says. “The old system was proving too complex to use and it was taking too long for operators to identify and retrieve recordings.” This was a major issue because staff at the site are caring for vulnerable people and, if an incident occurs, it’s vital that they can quickly access recordings that show exactly what happened. Delays in investigations can result in interrupted care delivery and costly disruption, so need to be minimized as much as possible. Motion-Sensor Activated Lighting The advantage of the IDIS 12MP fisheye cameras is that they allow all events to be captured automatically without the need for operators to focus in on an incident. Recordings from the new cameras always provide a complete 360 view of any given area without any blind spots. Just as importantly, the system is easy to use, and the footage can be accessed quickly. The fisheye units offer a choice of 6 de-warping view modes and ensure night-time IR viewing at up to 15 metres. The new system has also overcome a particular loophole at Ravenswood House: in some areas motion-sensor activated lighting was not sensitive to very slow movement, meaning the previous system could not capture images because it had no IR capability. This increased the vulnerability of both patients and staff. IDIS's Smart Failover Technology Overcoming this, the built-in IR capability in the IDIS fisheyes enables the capture of crisp, clear images even in darkness. Crucially, the new solution also features IDIS’s Smart Failover technology which protects against loss of footage due to a wide range of potential fault conditions, including network instability, network failure, storage failure, recorder hardware failure and power supply failure. IDIS and ISD Tech worked particularly closely to ensure the phase one installation went smoothly IDIS and ISD Tech worked particularly closely to ensure the phase one installation went smoothly, says Nicky Stokes, ISD Tech’s Managing Director. “Our engineers had to be very sensitive and careful working on this project because of the nature of the site and the needs of the patients. Everything went smoothly – IDIS equipment really is ‘plug and play’, which makes our job much faster, and we appreciate the high-level support that IDIS always gives.” Seven-Year Warranty With phase one completed, full roll-out of the IDIS technology through Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust sites will continue through 2019. “We are delighted that IDIS technology has been chosen for this important NHS project,” says Jamie Barnfield, Sales Director, IDIS Europe. “We know that our technology will provide outstanding service for years to come. Not only is it backed by our IDIS Ultimate seven-year warranty, our commitment to leading the way in new product development means that it will be forward-flexible and meet all the customer’s future needs.”
Rukey Solutions, which designs and installs integrated security and fire systems for commercial, retail and a range of SME customers, says the focus on video technology from IDIS offers significant benefits in terms of performance, cost and technical support. “We first connected with IDIS at IFSEC four years ago and since then we’ve been consistently impressed with how well their technology performs and how straightforward it is to work with,” explains Rukey’s Managing Director, Darren Morrison. “Becoming an IDIS technology partner gives us a lot of confidence as we compete to deliver even more advanced video solutions for our customers.” Developing New Business An advantage of the specialist partner status, he says, is that IDIS is particularly focused on support when it comes to developing new business with its partners – their measure of success is not when a system is sold, but when a solution is completed, when it is designed and installed efficiently and lives up to the end-user’s expectations. IDIS video technology is also easy to work with to create fully integrated solutions, without the cost or complexity IDIS video technology is also easy to work with to create fully integrated solutions, without the cost or complexity. For example, IDIS’s flagship IDIS Center video management system. This advanced, self-configuring IDIS technology is straightforward to work with and is well proven in demanding sectors such as retail, leisure and commercial settings. Forward Flexible Technology With the IDIS seven-year warranty and the assurance that the technology will be forward-flexible to meet future needs, the cost of ownership is also very attractive for users. Welcoming the partnership agreement, which was signed on IDIS stand C140 at IFSEC 2018, Jamie Barnfield, Sales Director of IDIS Europe, says Rukey Solutions’ customers will benefit from access to both current up-coming innovations. “We are delighted that Rukey Solutions has had such positive customer feedback about our technology,” Barnfield says. “IDIS is continually improving on the performance of our products and our forward path of innovation will help Darren and his team to further succeed in this exciting market.”
IDIS, a global surveillance manufacturer, has launched its IDIS VA in the Box analytics on its stand G700 at this year’s IFSEC International. A powerful tool available for making businesses more competitive, IDIS VA in the Box gives customers access to information needed to make the best business decisions possible. The data generated gives retailers and other end users the opportunity to learn more about their customers, their behaviors, and their needs and demands. Its simple plug-and-play installation makes IDIS VA in the Box perfect for integrators and installers unfamiliar with complicated software-based analytics, requiring little to no maintenance and ensuring a low cost of ownership for end users. IDIS VA In The Box Features People counting allowing customers to count, track, and analyze shoppers. This provides insight into exactly how many people come and go, and the difference between the estimated and actual floating population. The management and administration through people counting is essential for places requiring high-level security, such as airports and other transportation hubs. Expected number of visitors can be predicted by accumulated data and appropriate action can be made in advance. Heatmaps allow retailers to visualize visitor footfall and behavior and highlight where people spend time and what they interact with. This can be utilized to determine the best location where exposure needs to be maximized, such as new product zones or areas with sluggish sales. It can also be used to select the best locations for advertisements and promotional materials. Queue Management that reduces customer waiting times and allows retailers to more effectively manage queues. This feature enhances customer satisfaction by enabling the opening and closing of the appropriate number of counters based on how many customers are in line. Swift team validated IDIS and DirectIP on the IDIS stand at IFSEC IDIS and Swift Fire & Security, one of the UK’s leading independent fire safety and security service providers, recently announced and signed a strategic partnership agreement during IFSEC International, at London’s ExCel. Swift To Increase Profit Margins By Streamlining The Networked Surveillance systems Established in 1982, Swift are highly experienced systems integrators providing installation and maintenance of both fire and security systems across the UK’s largest public and private sector organizations. Swift maintains a large national network of multi-disciplined engineers, proficient in fire life safety systems and in electrical, mechanical and networked security systems that encompass surveillance, intruder, access control, lighting and building management systems. Installing over £1.4M of security systems a month, Swift Fire & Security wanted to increase profit margins by streamlining the networked surveillance systems they offered to just three manufacturers. Swift recognized that some IP manufacturers were delivering poor technical support and regularly had diluted product availability, while some systems were proving difficult and complex to implement and commission. In early 2014, Swift began evaluating a number of network surveillance solutions and one that impressed was DirectIP™ from IDIS. Packaged as an end-to-end solution, comprising a range of cameras, monitors, network video recorders (NVR), network accessories and comprehensive VMS, DirectIP delivered the plug-and-play simplicity of installation and high performance that Swift were looking for. Evaluated IDIS DirectIP The reliability and video data integrity DirectIP offered, together with an intuitive user interface, simple maintenance requirements, low power consumption and a bundled VMS with no annual license fees, also met with the security and low cost of ownership requirements demanded by Swift’s end user customers. Tony Bates, Security Director at Swift Fire & Security, commented, “We carefully evaluated IDIS DirectIP™ against a number of other IP systems and quickly realised that it offered us what we were looking for in terms of functionality, performance and simple plug-and-play installation as well as providing every element required to implement a complete network surveillance solution. “In addition, we were equally impressed with the excellent local technical support, locally warehoused stock, and customer service that the IDIS team could provide. Having made our final decision to make DirectIP one of our network surveillance offerings, it made perfect sense to sign the official partnership agreement here at IFSEC, the home of security solutions.” Jamie Barnfield, Senior Sales Manager at IDIS Europe, added, “We’re thrilled to sign and announce this agreement at IFSEC with the atmosphere and excitement of the show. This year IDIS is presenting its most comprehensive total surveillance solution to date--with DirectIP at the heart of that offering. One of the top security systems integrators in the UK, Swift Fire & Security are also one of the most established and well-respected in the industry. To have the Swift team validate IDIS and DirectIP here on the IDIS stand at IFSEC, is truly a great honor. We’re very much looking forward to supporting and working with the Swift team moving forward.”
