| Session topics for the September 2013 program will focus on Intelligence Sharing and Cross-Border Policing |
U.S. Representative Candice S. Miller (MI-10) will keynote on September 13th at the US/Canada Border Conference. Rep. Miller serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security and Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security. In April, she released a statement in support of legislation she is cosponsoring HR 1417, the Border Security Results Act of 2013 asking for better metrics for measuring U.S. borders, “Border security should be based on these three questions: What does a secure border look like, how do we get there, and most importantly how do we measure it? “
Rep. Miller has introduced several pieces of legislation for border security and protection. In 2011, she introduced HR 1299, the Secure Border Act of 2012, asking for the Department of Homeland Security to fully staff and invest in securing U.S. land borders and ports of entry. In 2012, she also introduced HR 4251 SMART Port Security Act.

The US/Canada Border Conference speaker line-up released last week includes representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security joining with Canada’s Privy Council Office, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Canada Border Services Agency. All programs will be held at the Cobo Center in Detroit. Speakers will address mutual areas of cooperation and opportunity associated with the shared US/Canada border, and the Beyond the Border Action Plan.
“Border security is an important issue for both the United States and Canada and it is vital we continually work hand-in-hand to keep our nations safe. Together, we must meet the challenge of securing our borders while keeping commerce and passengers flowing expediently which is so vital to both our economies,” Representative Miller said. “Canada is our closest ally, neighbor, friend and biggest trading partner – I look forward to addressing this important conference and the continued collaboration between our two nations.”
Other confirmed keynote speakers include Thomas S. Winkowski, Acting Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Mike Cabana, Deputy Commissioner, Federal Policing, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Alan Bersin, Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; and David Moloney, Senior Advisor, Border Action Plan Implementation, Privy Office, Canada.
