ONVIF, a global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, held its annual membership meeting in November, providing ONVIF members with an overview of important activities of 2019 and plans for the year ahead. Attendees heard presentations on the growth of ONVIF, as well as plans for new profile development. ONVIF Chairman Per Björkdahl highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past year, particularly the market’s continued support for the profile concept, with the number of conformant products surpassing 13,000 earlier this year. With six profiles to choose from and additional ones in development, ONVIF profiles have increasingly been included in various bid and specification processes in projects around the world, making it the de-facto interface in the industry. Björkdahl also noted the continued involvement of ONVIF in the International Electrotechnical Commission’s work on international standardization, in addition to new proposals for cloud connectivity and interoperability between multiple systems. Video Enhancement Working Group The overarching goal of ONVIF is to provide to the market a single interface through which every system can operate As is tradition, ONVIF recognized the contributions of multiple individuals from various ONVIF committees. Steve Wolf, who served on several ONVIF committees on behalf of Pelco, received the ONVIF Service Award, which acknowledges individuals who have provided a long-term commitment to the organization. While serving on the Technical Committee, Wolf led the Security Working Group, and was also an active participant in the Video Enhancement Working Group, contributing to a number of improvements in how ONVIF approaches video. Andreas Schneider of Sony received the ONVIF Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to ONVIF over many years in multiple functions. Schneider’s long-term service to the Technical Services Committee has positioned him as a major facilitator of the ONVIF organization, with contributions to multiple ONVIF profiles. Physical access control standards “The overarching goal of ONVIF is to provide to the market a single interface through which every system can operate,” said Björkdahl. “Our honorees have shown significant and long-term commitment to our organization, in turn making this goal a reality one profile at a time. We thank both of our recipients for their innovation, hard work and service.” ONVIF Technical Committee Chairman, Hans Busch of Bosch, spoke to members about the specification development roadmap, which highlights plans for future profile development, as well as the continued alignment to the standardization activities within the IEC TC 79 working groups for video surveillance and physical access control standards. Specifically, Busch covered what specifications are being examined for future profiles, and how they complement and further enhance existing ONVIF profiles. IP-based physical security products ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutionsAs chair of the Technical Services Committee, Sony’s Schneider gave an overview of the committee’s work on new and existing profiles, client and device test tools, updates to the conformance process and tools, and the Developers’ Plugfest. Shi-lin Chan of Axis Communications, who serves as chair of the ONVIF Communication Committee, provided a recap of ONVIF communication efforts in 2019, and discussed ONVIF’s plans for the launch of a Mandarin website later this year. The organization has a global member base of established camera, video management system and access control companies and more than 13,000 profile conformant products. Attendees heard presentations on the final release of Profile T in 2018, an advancement which represents how ONVIF keeps pace with technological advancements that affect product development and interoperability between IP-based physical security products. Profile T For Advanced Video Streaming In an acknowledgement of its 10th anniversary, ONVIF chairman, Per Björkdahl highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past decade, including an overview of the six ONVIF profiles, with emphasis on the newly released Profile T for advanced video streaming. Collectively, the profiles provide support for the more than 10,000 conformant products that are increasingly included in various bid and specification processes in projects around the world. Björkdahl also cited the continued involvement of ONVIF as part of the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission’s TC79 for international standardization. ONVIF also recognized the contributions of four individuals from various ONVIF technical committees for their work on different profiles and committees. Fredrik Svensson of Axis and Dora Han of Hikvision were recipients of the ONVIF award, which acknowledges individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to ONVIF. As chairman of the Profile T Working Group, Svensson was a leading force in the development and successful final release of the Profile T specification. Han received the award for her extensions to the specification, and for supporting the development of other members’ extensions to the specification. 2018 ONVIF Distinguished Service Awards Recipients One of two 2018 ONVIF Distinguished Service Awards was given to Baldvin Gislason Bern of Axis  One of two 2018 ONVIF Distinguished Service Awards was given to Baldvin Gislason Bern of Axis for his role in developing and proofing the evolution concept as chair of the Technical Services Device Test Tool Evolution. Joining him in receiving this award is Dr. Hasan Timucin Ozdemir of Panasonic, who served as chairman from 2009-2018 of the ONVIF Video Enhancement Working Group, which is responsible for formulating and prototyping new features for the ONVIF specification. “All of our honorees have shown their significant and long-term commitment to the organization as a whole, and in turn have directly and positively impacted the work of ONVIF,” said Björkdahl. “The success of our organization would not be possible without the innovative contributions and hard work of our members, and for that, we say thank you.” Defining Video Surveillance And Access Control Standards ONVIF Technical Committee Chairman, Hans Busch of Bosch, spoke to members about the specification development roadmap and its alignment to the standardization activities within the IEC TC 79 working groups for video surveillance and physical access control standards. Attendees heard presentations on the final release of Profile A in 2017 and the ongoing development of Profile T for advanced video streaming, activities which are enabling the growing prevalence of the nearly 9,000 ONVIF conformant products in bid and specification processes in projects around the world. International Standards Inclusion In the webinar’s opening remarks, ONVIF Steering Committee Chairman Per Björkdahl highlighted collective achievements of ONVIF since its founding in 2008, including the continued inclusion of ONVIF in international standards from organizations such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), on its IEC TC 79 standard for video surveillance and physical access control standards. Björkdahl also cited the progress of ONVIF on a system-to-system approach for interoperability between various management systems, work which is happening in tandem with continued development of additional profiles to keep pace with the changes of the industry. Arsenio Vilallonga, former Vice President, Networked Systems, FLIR Systems, Inc. and Nicholas Brochu of Genetec, one of the most active participants in the development of Profile T, were recipients of the 2017 ONVIF Award, which recognizes individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to ONVIF. Sriram Prasad Bhetanabottla of Canon Inc., was recognized with the 2017 ONVIF Distinguished Service Award for his role as an active, contributing core member to the Device Testing activities of the Technical Services Working Group’s and Profile T. “Arsenio, Nicholas and Sriram have made significant contributions to the development of Profile T, our newest release candidate for advanced video streaming, as well as to the ongoing work of ONVIF,” said Björkdahl. “As a member-driven organization, it’s important to recognize members who contribute many hours of service to the work of ONVIF, and contribute to fulfilling our mission. Per Björkdahl announced the recipients of the 2016 ONVIF Award at the annual membership meeting ONVIF, a standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, hosted its annual membership meeting on October 25, 2016, updating members on ONVIF’s accomplishments of 2016 and its outlook for the year ahead. ONVIF member companies heard presentations on the final release of Profile Q in 2016 and the ongoing development of Profile T for video, in addition to learning about the growing prevalence of ONVIF’s more than 7,000 conformant models of products in bid and specification processes in projects around the world. On behalf of ONVIF Steering Committee, Per Björkdahl shared the goals and strategies for the upcoming year ONVIF, the leading global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, hosted its annual membership meeting and elections in late October, providing an update to members on ONVIF activities and accomplishments over the past year. Attendees around the world heard presentations on such activities as the development and publication of two new profiles (release candidates) in 2015, the launch of a false conformance reporting tool on the ONVIF website and the organization’s ongoing membership and growth in conformant products. Attendees in the annual meeting, held via webinar, were welcomed by ONVIF Steering Committee Chairman Per Björkdahl, who discussed how ONVIF had recently reached several milestones as an organization by virtue of its 500 member companies and more than 5,000 ONVIF conformant products available in the physical security market today. ONVIF’s Goals And Strategies For Upcoming Year On behalf of the ONVIF Steering Committee, Björkdahl shared the goals and strategies for the upcoming year, asking member companies for increased involvement in ONVIF’s work and inviting members to share their ONVIF success stories. He also noted the growing acceptance by the industry at large. “ONVIF has made incredible strides since our formation in 2008,” Björkdahl said. “Together, we have developed five profiles, offered education and networking opportunities to thousands of people and have gained broad acceptance within the physical security industry. Technical Services Committee Chair Andreas Schneider of Sony shared the timeline for upcoming profile releases through 2018 and spoke about the 13th Developers’ Plugfest, to be held November 11-13, 2015, in Hangzhou, China. ONVIF Communications Chair Stuart Rawling of Pelco by Schneider Electric closed the meeting with a recap of the ONVIF presence at various trade shows throughout 2015, the forum’s public relations and social media efforts and the findings of an ongoing market awareness survey about ONVIF and its various profiles.
