Measuring return on investment (ROI) has long presented a challenge to the security marketplace. Investment in security is often viewed as a necessary cost whose benefits cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the value of an event that doesn’t happen (i.e., that has been prevented)? The difficulty of measuring ROI doesn’t diminish customers’ appetite for it, however. Today’s choosy customers are driven more than ever by the bottom line and expect any and all of their investments to show a healthy return. Therefore, we asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: Is it possible to measure return on investment (ROI) in the security market? How?
As the new school term begins, awareness of security at all levels of educational institutions is higher than ever. Technology plays an important role in protecting educational facilities and their students, faculty, staff and visitors. Specific security challenges drive which technologies and other measures are used, and those challenges are evolving, along with the dynamic institutions security is tasked with protecting. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: What are the security challenges for schools and colleges?
Even the most effective technologies usually require some level of human involvement. What new technologies do, generally speaking, is change the nature of a human’s role. Most jobs in today’s world are vastly different than 50 years ago, in many cases because of the changing role of technology. In the physical security world, what specific impact does technology have on the human element of systems? We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: Have recent developments in security systems made manpower more, or less, important to the equation? Explain.

During 2017, we’ve enjoyed stable economic growth for a number of years now; we’re not running into as much resistance for security entrances as we did, say, seven to nine years ago. Hardening Perimeters Against Active Shooters Compared to other security products such as cameras and card readers, security entrances are a big investment and considered somewhat of a luxury: during downturns we’re among the first to hit the “cutting room floor.” Now, however, fueled by much greater C-suite awareness of the risks from unauthorized entry and tailgating, there is more buy-in to the added security and risk mitigation provided by security entrances and we’re experiencing strong growth. Going forward, we continue to see greater integration in our space and expanded capabilities to pull useable data from our entrance products and related access control systems. There is now a much greater emphasis on the danger of active shooter scenarios and much more interest in hardening perimeters, entrances, and lobbies. Companies Who Can't Scale Will Be Left Behind Amidst these trends, we foresee companies that can’t keep up with the pace of technology integration at the entrance and in the lobby losing market share. Other losers will be those in our market who cannot satisfy the needs of enterprise companies on a global basis, and the same can be said for integrator/install companies. Those who cannot scale are going to be left behind, those who can satisfy global, enterprise-level demands with a full product range and excellent sales and service support will continue to win. Hard Work And Investment As for our company, our growth continues to be well ahead of the market as a whole. According to the latest IHS Markit™ report, we enjoy market share leadership in five product categories. At the last two major tradeshows, I hear people referring to us as the “go-to company,” and the clear market leader. We have been diligently and strategically building to this position over the past decade. Where we are today reflects our hard work and our investment in serving companies globally, our ability to scale, producing products in the US, maintaining a full product line, and our unwavering commitment to a stellar sales and service experience.
At 2015 year-end, we are continuing to see a trend toward hardening the perimeter for buildings and property. I believe we are approaching a tipping point with respect to C-suite awareness of the perils of unauthorized entry, often called “piggybacking” or “tailgating” in security vocabulary. Top executives are becoming more aware of the threat and the potential cost of such threats, and they’re motivating their organizations to take action. Role Of Trusted Consultant Early adopter integrators of technology are taking on the role of trusted consultant, and that’s a good thing. We’re seeing more biometrics and more access control integrated with Boon Edam entrances. The same as the sea change of analog to IP, some integrators are starting to understand that by offering physical security entrances as part of the total solution for mitigating risk, they improve their partnership with the end user and increase their revenues significantly. This year, we at Boon Edam continued to gain market share in the optical/Speedlane turnstile verticals. We went from just 5% share 5 years ago to more than 20%. We increased share by a factor of four, and those gains are continuing. With our new Lifeline Series of optical turnstiles, that growth in share will accelerate. Outreach In Enterprise Accounts We have increased our outreach in Enterprise accounts, and we’re now creating demand — 2015 was a great seed planting year, and we’ll continue to do that in 2016 and beyond. We’re finding that we can help the end user’s security team pitch to the C-suite and that’s also pumping up sales growth. Right now, we’re focused on continuing to meet the challenges of 15%-plus annual growth; we’ve made a lot of adjustments and investments to accommodate that level of growth, and we’re navigating these positive challenges successfully. A huge opportunity for us is the major growth in data centers. This is a very attractive market for Boon Edam products, and we’re just scratching the surface. It is challenging to get these decision makers to see that our entrance technology is part of the solution and that their focus on labor (guards, etc.) and possibly other technologies can be supplemented and changed to start with a hardened perimeter. There is a huge, unrealised potential market out there. See the full coverage of 2015/2016 Review and Forecast articles here
Interest in mass notification systems appears to be growing in the security community as a response to active shootings and workplace violence 2014/2015 Boon Edam Review and Forecast: The security industry seems very healthy and continues to experience solid growth. We have observed an increased level of corporate and government expenditures, which allows for expanding security upgrades in general. Looking ahead to 2015, I see interest in mass notification systems appears to be growing in the security community as a response to active shootings, workplace violence, etc. Workplace incidents are getting more coverage in educational sessions and the media. We are investigating how our entrances can be involved in an overall solution. We expect this interest to expand and proliferate into the next decade. When it comes to physical security entrances, customers are demanding a more consistent set of solutions from their providers and they are consolidating their suppliers. They want vendors that provide multiple parts of the whole system and offer an excellent service level on all counts. Vendors that can do this will be clear winners in the long term with large customers. If a manufacturer provides only a subset of entrance solutions; for example, turnstiles, which deter unauthorized entry or traffic control, but that vendor doesn’t also offer security doors that absolutely prevent tailgating or piggybacking, they can only satisfy certain installations or silos within large organizations. We are fortunately able to offer different security entrance products to different silos within the same end user organization. We are thus providing multiple solutions to the various parts of their business. Boon Edam has been able to fully meet those varied needs with our breadth of product range and with our expanding sales team that can better reach the various stakeholders within these customer organizations. For 2015 and beyond, we have continued to react to and expand operations and capabilities of the organization to accommodate the unprecedented growth of revenues and numbers of customers in the last three years. We’re bullish about the continued growth of physical security entrance usage within the security industry and anticipate demand for applications such as ours will continue to grow at a rate faster than the security industry as a whole. Analyze Suspicious Behavior “By adding these doors to our defense-in-depth security strategy, we are providing the best possible protection system for our customers’ mission critical equipment.” In addition to Boon Edam’s Tourlock security revolving doors, RagingWire’s layered security approach features highly trained, 24x7 security staff, biometric scanners, badge readers, intelligent high-definition video cameras that analyze suspicious behavior, anti-tailgate mantraps, a building-within-a-building design, anti-climb perimeter fencing, concrete bollards in front of building entryways, and an anti-ram security gate.
Boon Edam Inc., a provider of security entrances and architectural revolving doors, has announced that as part of a continuous policy to certify products to North American standards, the Speedlane Swing and Open optical turnstiles have been tested and certified to conform with UL standards 325 and 2593, and CSA 22.2 for Canada. UL Standards 325 and 2593, as well as CSA C22.2 (the harmonized standard in Canada) are the prevalent industry standards for ensuring the safe operation of doors, turnstiles, gates and access control equipment in the United States and Canada. While all of Boon Edam’s products currently conform to CE (the European Union standard of safety and operation), the company continues to invest in UL certification for all door and turnstile products sold in the Americas to align with North American standards and ultimately streamline installation for its customers. We know field testing for UL is not always practical for our clients, so we continue to invest in UL certifications as new products are launched" Mitigating Risk With UL Certifications The Lifeline Swing and Open were launched initially in Europe in January 2015 and, after their launch in the Americas in March of the same year, quickly became a top seller due to their modern design, intuitive functionality and energy-saving operation. The Speedlane Swing in particular is currently very popular because it features the slimmest cabinets in the industry (only four inches wide) for a sleek look in downtown lobbies where space is at a premium. “Today’s business climate places a premium on risk mitigation and Boon Edam has always emphasized safety around the globe,” says Mark Borto, CEO of Boon Edam Inc. “We know field testing for UL is not always practical for our clients, so we continue to invest in UL certifications as new products are launched, which is a lengthy and expensive process.” Ensuring Operational Safety “By getting our products certified, we can assure our North American customers that a 3rd-party has rigorously tested our products and confirmed that they operate in a safe and predictable manner at any location.” The Lifeline turnstiles were tested by UL (United Laboratories), which was founded in 1894 and today helps companies demonstrate safety and confirm compliance. Some of the services offered by UL include: inspection, advisory services, education and training, testing, auditing and analytics, certification software solutions, and marketing claim verification.

Boon Edam Inc., global manufacturers of security entrances and architectural revolving doors, is demonstrating a new security portal solution at their ISC West 2018 booth (#8037). The Circlelock Combi will help security executives combat piggybacking and unauthorized entry in existing high security areas that currently have fire-rated swinging doors. Our new mantrap solution is a game changer for security managers who use fire-rated doors to protect their assets or data” Circlelock Combi Security Solution “Our new mantrap solution is a game changer for security managers who use fire-rated doors to protect their assets or data,” said Mark Borto, President and CEO of Boon Edam, Inc. “We designed the Circlelock Combi as a turn-key retrofit option to address the risk of tailgating that exists with swinging doors in facilities - once a swinging door is opened, anyone could slip inside behind an authorized user. But once the Combi is installed with that existing swing door, they still get all the benefits of a fire-rated entry, only now it’s a high security entrance that only lets authorized people enter and doesn’t need manned supervision.” The Circlelock Combi is a cylindrical mantrap portal solution that has a single sliding set of doors on one end and an opening on the other end that is mounted to an existing swing door. This also saves considerable space compared to traditional mantrap vestibules created from walls and two swinging doors. It provides a throughput of five to six people per minute and is ideal for any interior location where the most critical security is required. This could include data centers, government buildings, secure areas in airports, legal or patient record areas, prescription medication dispensaries, executive suites and more. Many facilities use fire-rated swing doors to protect data and assets from destruction by fire Fire-rated Swing Doors Many facilities use fire-rated swing doors to protect data and assets from destruction by fire, but this type of door cannot prevent tailgating or piggybacking. The Circlelock Combi attaches to the existing fire-rated door, converting it immediately into a mantrap solution that prevents piggybacking 24/7. One of the most important benefits of the Circlelock Combi is the enablement of multi-factor authentication – the ability to ensure that only one person, and the right person, is entering. Users can present a credential in front of the portal to open the sliding door and once inside and confirmed to be alone, can present another credential to unlock the swing door. The Combi can also accommodate a wide variety of identity verification technologies (iris scanner, facial reader, pushpad, etc.) in its interior with a customizable floor-to-ceiling post. Facial Scanning Technology Boon Edam will feature the Circlelock Combi solution in their ISC West booth as a two-factor authentication scenario: initial authentication using an AMAG Symmetry card reader to enter the portal, followed by facial scanning technology from StoneLock Pro to open the second door.

A recent report on the pedestrian security entrance market for the 2014-2016 timeframe establishes Boon Edam Inc., a manufacturer of revolving doors and security entrances, as the overall market leader in the Americas (North, Central, and South America). Boon Edam’s winning category covers “Pedestrian Entrance Control Equipment,” which includes all types of security doors, turnstiles, and gates. The report shows the overall pedestrian security entrance market in the Americas grew 14.8% during the period of the study. Boon Edam also made significant gains in revenue share during the same period in other entrance categories, most notably in “Speed Gates” optical turnstiles, where it moved to first place in the market, compared to third place in the prior two-year reporting period. Market Share Highlights IHS Markit, a global information provider, publishes the Pedestrian Entrance Control Equipment Report every two years by conducting detailed phone interviews with manufacturers of security entrances around the world. Below are some of the highlights of their findings in the Americas that involved Boon Edam: For “Pedestrian Entrance Equipment,” the company’s share increased to 27.7% of total revenue share, up 1.8% from the prior two years. This share is more than twice that of the nearest competitor. For the “Security Doors” category, the company had the leading share of 52.9%, up 3.8% from the last report. For “Security Revolving Doors,” the company’s leading share increased 4.8% to 55%. For “Speed Gates” (lobby turnstiles that use barriers and sensors to detect tailgating), Boon Edam moved up 5% from 3rd place in 2014 to now hold the leading market share at 20.3% in 2016. Key Success Factors Boon Edam Inc. attributes its leading performance to a number of factors. Increased security threats have made corporations and government entities around the world more aware of the dangers associated with unauthorized entries or tailgating, and they are taking steps to mitigate those risks, which include deployment of security entry solutions. Boon Edam’s comprehensive range of products and global footprint enable the company to work with very large end users In particular, sales of the Tourlock security revolving door and Circlelock security booth have increased due to their proactive prevention of tailgating or piggybacking without the need for supervision, creating an impressive ROI in a short timeframe. The launch of the Lifeline Series of optical turnstiles in 2014 (“Speed Gates” category in the report) was met with great success; the turnstiles’ sleek styling and functionality arrived in a market hungry for aesthetically appealing designs for lobby pedestrian barriers. Boon Edam Global Footprint Boon Edam’s comprehensive range of products and global footprint enable the company to work with very large end users to design tailored risk mitigation plans that can be deployed in one country or globally. “From 2014 to 2016, we experienced a surge in demand for security entrances from large, global companies, which I attribute to more and more executives really ‘getting it’”, said Mark Borto, CEO of Commercial Operations at Boon Edam Inc. “Going back three or more years, people didn’t know what a security revolving door was and that has changed completely.” “Starting several years ago, we invested heavily in what we call ‘The Boon Edam Experience’—we doubled the size of our sales and technical service organization, started a large, diverse technical training programme, and significantly broadened our marketing efforts. More recently, we added an enterprise sales group. All of this has built repeat business and enabled us to more easily scale up to global-sized customers. As the total market continues to grow globally, we are more prepared than ever to grow with it and continue to gain market share.”
StoneLock, a global provider of designing and manufacturing biometric access control and identity management solutions, and Boon Edam Inc., a global provider of security entrances and architectural revolving doors, are pleased to announce their integrated presence at the 63rd ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits in Dallas, Texas from September 26-28. This convergence of the StoneLock identity assurance solution with the Boon Edam tailgating prevention capabilities delivers exceptional overall security for end users. Secondary Biometric Authentication Meeting the customer’s need for enhanced security and identity verification, StoneLock and Boon Edam collectively deliver a seamless, integrated solution for secondary biometric authentication. Frequently deployed in high-security areas where identity assurance is required, this integration provides an intuitive and user-friendly experience while meeting the requirements of the most stringent security facilities. “When building StoneLock products and solutions, our team does so with the primary goal of improving security and access control functions not only for our products but for those we integrate with as well. We are in the business of creating a more secure world and therefore design our products to compliment others that share this mission,” said Colleen Dunlap, CEO and Co-Founder of StoneLock. “The StoneLock Pro integration with the Boon Edam Circlelock is a brilliant example of a highly successful integration that works together to fulfill this goal while meeting the needs of both the consumer for ease of use and the security practitioner for reliable access control.” "The big upside of today’s biometric tech is that the recognition is super-fast" Multi-Factor Authentication “Our customers appreciate seeing completely integrated solutions that include access control, identity management and piggybacking prevention,” said Mark Borto, CEO and President of Boon Edam Inc. “The big upside of today’s biometric tech is that the recognition is super-fast, making our security turnstiles and doors work better – they keep out the unauthorized users but for everyone else, it’s a smooth, fast journey into secure areas. We are delighted to work together with StoneLock to showcase today’s multi-factor authentication in action while here at ASIS.” ASIS exhibit attendees will have the opportunity to experience the integration of StoneLock Pro with the Boon Edam Circlelock and Turnlock EL first hand on the ASIS exhibitor floor. Boon Edam Turnlock 200 EL The Boon Edam Turnlock 200 EL is a transparent, full height turnstile that combines simple and reliable operations with an attractive and transparent design to suit the aesthetic needs of an indoor environment. Verification of identity for entry is gained through the integration with StoneLock Pro proprietary near infrared (NIR) technology, which measures over 2,000 points of facial reflectivity in less than a second. Boon Edam Circlelock The Boon Edam Circlelock (wall mount option), a half circular portal with a curved sliding door that attaches to an existing wall and swing door, provides a rigorous identity and piggybacking prevention solution when combined with StoneLock Pro. Upon authorization from an external access control system, the Circlelock opens the primary entry door. Once the user has entered the portal, the StereoVision 2 system determines that the user is alone, which prompts the StoneLock biometric identification solution to validate the identity of the user. Boon Edam Inc., a provider of security entrances and architectural revolving doors, announces that a completely new production line for its Lifeline Optical Turnstiles is now operational at the company’s Lillington, NC factory. These are the first turnstiles of the Lifeline Series now officially “Made in the USA.” Until now, the Lifeline Series has been built exclusively in Holland. Today, orders for new Lifeline turnstiles can be filled directly from the USA factory for customers in the Americas. High Demand In The USA “When the Lifeline Series was originally launched in 2014, the demand in the Americas was exceptionally strong,” said Mark Borto, President and CEO of Commercial Operations at Boon Edam, Inc., a subsidiary of the global company. “We had so many inquiries back then it was hard to manage delivery expectations. One of the hardest factors was the long lead time because they were made and shipped from Holland. We knew early on that we needed to build a production line at our USA factory to deliver the product within our customer’s timeframe. Other benefits include being able to directly manage product quality and respond quickly to any need for spare parts.” Planning and design for a new Lifeline turnstile production line started in the summer of 2016. One of each type of the Lifeline turnstiles was ordered from Holland to enable local engineers in Lillington to analyze the construction. Boon Edam’s Supply Chain management was involved in sourcing local materials and vendors to stock inventory and determine which components would be manufactured in-house. Lifeline Optical Turnstiles There are three distinct types of Lifeline optical turnstile: Open (barrier-free and smallest footprint), Slide, and Swing. All three models will now be built in the United States, with some exceptions for custom painted parts. The Lifeline Series is a unique turnstile in the marketplace due to its high-end aesthetic design and distinctive LED cueing feature when users approach for entry. Special lighting indicates where users should hold their RFID card for authorization and running lights indicate the correct lane to pass through. “The response to the Lifeline has been immense,” said Borto, “we are experiencing heavy demand for these turnstiles for Class A office buildings in large cities and the headquarters buildings of Fortune 1000 companies in the USA and around the world. Having them roll off the production line here in Lillington is a huge step in fulfilling demand and delivery expectations for our most successful product launch in over a decade.”

The Turnlock turnstile segment was filmed to show how the components of a turnstile are built and assembled Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, recently announced that its Turnlock 100 full height turnstile will be a featured technology in an upcoming episode of “Machines: How They Work” on the Discovery Science Channel. Machines: How They Work Each 30-minute episode of “Machines: How They Work” specializes in revealing the fascinating hidden workings of our everyday world using incredible photo-realistic CGI to explore everyday objects into their component parts. The show also films in live action at real locations to show how objects are manufactured and operate in their installed environment. Boon Edam Turnlock The episode featuring the Boon Edam Turnlock full height turnstile will air in the United States at 10pm on Thursday, April 28th. The episode seeks to reveal the answers to the following questions about three featured products: How does a frozen yogurt maker convert gallons of liquid into fluffy frozen dessert? How does a turnstile allow authorized people to enter, but stop intruders in their tracks? How can the office chair keep the world’s workforce comfortable? The turnstile segment was filmed in North Carolina at Boon Edam’s Lillington manufacturing plant to show how the components of a turnstile are built and assembled. Turnstiles installed at Cree Research in Research Triangle Park (NC) were filmed to illustrate how turnstiles operate in a real-world environment, and stop intruders from entering a secure area. “What an honor to be selected by Discovery Channel to be featured on this program,” said Mark Borto, Boon Edam CEO. “For many, a turnstile is nothing special, but the way this program explains the manufacture and use of the humble turnstile demonstrates there is a lot more going on than meets the eye.”
NC Rep. Price met with the Boon Edam management team to learn more about the company's access control solutions Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, was honored to receive a specially scheduled visit on Monday, February 1st by U.S. Congressman David E. Price, who represents the 4th District in North Carolina. The Congressman began his visit by meeting with the management team at Boon Edam to learn more about the company and its solutions. CEO Mark Borto shared that strong growth in the security industry had supported double digit annual increases in revenue for Boon Edam in recent years, spurring the company to hire over 100 people in the last four years to keep up with the increased demand for security entrances. When the Congressman asked what our products do, Borto replied, “Boon Edam’s security entrances are used to mitigate risk, to fix ‘the hole’ in buildings created when a secured door is opened and another person tailgates behind the authorized individual. Our security entrances are typically deployed at main entrance lobbies, employee entrances, and higher security interior doors.” Boon Edam Security Entrances In Federal Buildings The Congressman was then given a tour of the 275,000 sq. ft. factory and the product showroom to see first-hand how the products are manufactured and how they operate to stop tailgating. Rep. Price noted that he had seen several types of security entrance products in federal buildings in Washington D.C. Boon Edam’s security entrances are currently deployed in many federal and military facilities around the USA, and many are equipped with two-factor or multi-factor authentication systems to ensure the identity of the user is verified prior to entry. “I enjoyed learning about the innovative work underway at Boon Edam’s Lillington facility,” said Congressman Price. “I am thrilled that Boon Edam’s expansion has created hundreds of jobs in the Fourth District, and I look forward to supporting the company’s ongoing relationship with North Carolina for many years to come.”

Our revolving doors provide measureable ROI by creating comfortable, energy-saving interiors, and our security doors and turnstiles can stop unauthorized entry into secure areas.” “In addition to our distributors in the area, the new sales office and dedicated field service team can apply focused expertise to significantly grow our business in this competitive market. Over 70% of respondents believe they are currently vulnerable to a security breach from tailgating Boon Edam Inc. recently released the results of an internal survey looking at perceptions and trends with respect to the issue of tailgating entry into buildings. The survey was conducted in late 2014. Boon Edam Inc. asked over 3,000 contacts from its database of end users, security consultants and integrators to share their perceptions about the risk of tailgating into their facilities. The survey consisted of eight multiple choice questions with comments available for certain questions. The survey achieved a response rate of approximately 8%, and respondents were primarily from North America. Here Are Some Of The More Interesting Findings From The Survey: Based on media coverage over the past 10 years, a majority of respondents believe security breaches from tailgating have remained constant or are on the rise. Over 70% of respondents believe they are currently vulnerable to a security breach from tailgating. More than 50% of those surveyed believe the cost of a breach caused by tailgating would be from $150,000 up to “too high to measure.” Over 70% of respondents believe a barrier of some type is the most effective way to curtail tailgating, and over 60% reported they use a physical security barrier of some type as well as employee education. Only 15% said they are currently tracking tailgating incidents regularly. The majority of survey respondents appear to take tailgating and its risks very seriously and are deploying a variety of strategies to combat it, but they still consider themselves vulnerable. “Our survey strongly suggests that the current level of security at the majority of facilities is perceived to be inadequate for stopping tailgating altogether,” commented Mark Borto, CEO for Boon Edam. “Since the majority of respondents believe the tailgating threat is real and potentially very expensive, this demonstrates a need clearly not being met. Such a situation means we’ll see investments in tailgating prevention, and/or increasing the overall level of physical security, likely figuring into future budget considerations.”
