Pre-existing networks are not usually designed to support IP video cameras, so aparallel network for their exclusive use is best when it comes to storage The video storage boom shows no signs of slowing down. The talk is not typically how much storage; but where and how to store. Locally-housed (on-premises) storage continues to be the most cost-effective, along with providing the most control over your data. However, prior to considering the storage, it is important to look at the robustness of the network, as it is a key factor in making the right decision for storage architecture. It is necessary to know if there is enough pipe to take the footage from point A to point B. Storage Requirements For Video Cameras It is more than likely that the existing network was not initially designed with IP video cameras in mind. VOIP phones, perhaps; but not the IP cameras. With 1080P cameras using 2-3Mb and 20MP cameras taking 20-30Mb of network stream, it does not take many video cameras to wreak havoc on the existing network. This is why a parallel network exclusive to the video cameras is generally the best course of action. As you start determining the storage needs, it is critical that scalability is built into the formula. We generally suggest 20% overhead availability. You certainly do not need to purchase the system that way, but just know – in advance - your options to upgrade. Ask how many additional cameras the system in its present state can handle, and how many open drive bays are available, and how many cameras per hard drive added? If the answer in none and none, then you are getting a maxxed-out system with zero scalability. Buyer, beware - as many things beyond your control can change the storage requirements, even after the system has been deployed. Longer Retention Periods For Storage More often than ever, government and business retention regulations have come into play. Anyone selling into the Texas school system knows about SB 507, the law mandating that special education classrooms must record audio and video for a period of 180 days. No special funding was extended to offset this requirement. But Texas schools are not the only ones faced with longer retention mandates. The U.S. Coast Guard has regulations on all commercial vessels requiring six months of retention. Payment Card Industry (PCI) requires 90 days. In Illinois, medical marijuana fields and dispensaries WERE 30 days of retention. Overnight and without warning, this was changed to 90 days, and they had thirty days to comply or face fines. The list goes on and on. With both last minute changes and unforeseen regulations in mind, it is imperative to have storage flexibility. In every situation, the fix could be as easy as adding a hard drive or two – a much better and less costly solution than needing a new server. Keep in mind the analytic capabilities within the stored footage. More and more corporations and organizations are utilizing the video analytics as they do their Business Intelligence software, which requires an even longer period of time in order to view that data. Make it a priority that your server is purpose built to run with the video software of your choosing. There are nuances within each of the major video management software companies that make them write differently to the disks. The system needs to be built to support that particular software for maximum performance per their disk allocations. One size certainly does not fit all! Scalability and durability are key considerations for any video recording server Storage capabilities within the server are important, but bandwidth capabilities are the key. These days, anyone could build a 100+TB server. All you really need is a box and drive bays. But without the ability to process the data to the hard drives and simultaneously send that out to the viewing station or stations, the storage serves little purpose other than driving up cost. The ability of the video server to ingest large amounts of bandwidth is more vital to managing and recording the video than the storage capability of the unit. Durability Of Recording Servers If the video recording system cannot manage 500Mbps throughput, it really has no business being called an enterprise video server; it’s just a server running video. Or an expensive DVR. Case in point, use 125 x 1080P cameras at 15fps an example. Regardless of the retention time, be it one day or thirty, the necessary system bandwidth stays consistent at 414Mbps. For thirty days of storage, it’s roughly 67TB of RAID5 useable storage, or 84TB of total storage. The storage part is easy, just need enough drive bays and hard disks. The major hard disk manufacturers have done their part to make those affordable. Focus on the bandwidth and throughput capabilities within the server. It really is that critical. Lastly, durability needs to come into the equation. The server could very well have an on-site warranty. However, if the unit is crashing every other day, and the integrator needs to roll a truck each time after the service call, then you have cameras that are also not recording every other day alongside of it. In the end, the “included” warranty ends up costing money for labor and possibly the reputation with the customer. This could also result in a liability to the business or the integrator. A few years back, at a major league baseball stadium, a couple was mugged in the parking lot after the game, underneath a video surveillance camera. Unfortunately for them, the recording server was not functioning, thus nothing was recorded. More unfortunately for the park, they were sued under the argument that having the video camera gave the couple the sense of security; although it turned out to be a false sense of security. Having the system consistently running should be the expectation. Consider the warranty more of an insurance policy SHOULD the server have an issue, not WHEN. Building the proper infrastructure regarding to the network and within the video recorder as it relates to bandwidth, scalability, and durability, will ensure success in your video surveillance recording. Not only for today, but for five years from today… and beyond.
How did the overall economy impact the security marketplace in 2015? In as much as security is more and more becoming a necessity, it would be difficult to gauge whether the economy had any direct effect other than at a budget level. With the introduction of 4K technology, video storage with longer retention time has become the need of the hour. Being a manufacturer of IP video storage solutions, BCDVideo has been able to work with security integrators and camera manufacturers from around the world. Perhaps there was some slim-down in scope and size, but we certainly saw an upswing in new project installations. In 2015, we also saw much more scrutiny placed on the quality of the video stream at display level. The end customer is expecting pristine, non-pixelated imagery. The affordable technology within the newest-generation of PC’s and workstations from the CPU and graphics standpoint allow multiple views of high-definition camera activity. Storage Solutions For Different Sectors We are seeing a push to longer retention times of video storage. This is coming through many forums and for numerous environments – state government and educational, correctional, healthcare, and corporate legal, to name a few. In many cases, the longer retention, of a longer part of it, needs to remain on premises in order to secure the data. While cloud certainly will have a significant impact, hybrid cloud will be more of a factor than ever, especially where archival tape had been the standard. Life has been very kind to BCDVideo. We get to work with the best of the best security integrators, video management system (VMS) and camera manufacturers every day. In addition, our relationship with Hewlett Packard is uniquely special. That is how we view our success, having those relationships. The video storage market has been forecasted to be $42.6B by 2020; suffice to say, it’s a good time to be in this market. The use of video analytics has the greatest upside, as it likely is only realizing 5 to 10% of its potential now. It is the business intelligence software of the future. We decided to tackle this issue and finally through engineering and testing, b”uilt a viable solution,” said Tom Larson, Chief Technical Officer, BCDVideo. “We successfully adapted the technology for video.” The HCI-VS system installs at the project site within an hour and is a fully integrated cluster-wide resourceEliminating System Downtime BCDVideo’s new Hyperconverged Infrastructure for Video Surveillance (HCI-VS) Series greatly simplifies the deployment, management, and maintenance of its infrastructure, saving the security integrator training costs, and most importantly, eliminating system downtime. The HCI-VS system installs at the project site within an hour and is a fully integrated cluster-wide resource. Deploying new Virtual Machines (VMs) can be achieved in minutes and everything is managed through a very easy-to-use web interface. The native high availability built into this all-in-one solution utilizes automation and self-healing to eliminate the complexities around deployment and ongoing management. HC3 Self-Healing Machine Intelligence “It goes far beyond building an easy-to-deploy hyperconverged solution on the Dell OEM platform, although flexibility within that technology is an innovator’s dream,” reflected Jeff Burgess, Chief Executive Officer of BCDVideo. “It’s more about making a significant difference in a market that sincerely needs one. Customers need high-availability solutions that don’t cost an arm and a leg and perform as promised. BCDVideo has delivered on both counts.” The HC3 self-healing machine intelligence automatically identifies, mitigates, and corrects infrastructure problems in real-time" “The HC3 self-healing machine intelligence automatically identifies, mitigates, and corrects infrastructure problems in real-time, eliminating the need for infrastructure management componentry. This innovation makes HC3 simple for security integrators to manage and administer,” commented Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder, Scale Computing. “The HCI-VS system, powered by Scale Computing, combines the HC3 self-healing automation with BCDVideo’s leading technology, giving customers a solution built to meet industry wide surveillance requirements while also simplifying the management and maintenance of their infrastructure.” HCI-VS Solution At ISC West The HCI-VS is currently available to ship. BCDVideo announces the hiring of a 15-year security industry veteran Maureen Carlo. In her position of Business Development Manager, Maureen will be responsible for driving BCDVideo’s technology message and product platform to national and local security integrators, as well as Architectural & Engineering (A&E) firms throughout the Eastern United States. Maureen has a diverse industry background, including technology consultation, content development, system integrator, product portfolio manager, and marketing consultant. For the past five years, Maureen was at VIDEOTEC Security, Inc., developing their U.S. brand name recognition, partnerships, and programs. “I’ve known Maureen since her days at Wells Communications and have followed her rock star career ever since,” stated Jeff Burgess, BCDVideo President and CEO. “To have her onboard at BCDVideo is such a major win for the company and having her based in New York ices a cake that needed no icing.” Provide Positive Visibility In 2018, Maureen joined the inaugural steering committee for Security Industry Association’s (SIA) Woman in Security Forum. This group advocates for advancement and building confidence in the workplace through mentorship and sponsorship programs, recruiting efforts for next-generation female professionals and leaders, initiating an ongoing dialog between male and female leaders, and identifying platforms that can provide positive visibility for women. “BCDVideo and I began our story together in 2008 when I was an integrator and Jeff helped me sell their servers. When I pivoted my career to manufacturing, BCDVideo sold my product,” adds Ms. Carlo. “Through these 10 years, we’ve watched each other flourish in the physical security industry, and I’ve admired watching BCDVideo mentor the next generation of security professionals, which our industry craves. Now, our story evolves—and I think we’re going to have some fun in the process!”
Jeff Burgess’ career has spanned nearly 40 years in various segments of the computer industry, getting his start as a company shipper and working his way up to Vice President of Sales seven years later, within that same organization. He founded Burgess Computer Decisions, Inc., (BCD) in 1999, building high-availability servers for Fortune 500 companies. Burgess has been married for 33 years to Joanne, and has three children, one daughter-in-law, and two dogs. How did you come to work in the security industry? A fluke chance meeting in early 2008 led to the inception of BCDVideo via a customer-generated issue at a local GE site introduced me to the security industry. Another case of “good service wins the day”. We had already been established as an organization trained to provide high-availability servers and even higher-availability customer service to Fortune 500 accounts. We simply flipped that model to the security integrators and it was, frankly, nothing they had ever seen before. What is the best professional advice you have received? “First get the deal, then worry about it”. I learned that from Judson Beamsley, then President of Tek-Aids Industries, the company I started with as a shipper. He had just won (from Illinois) a multi-million three-year State of Texas contract on product he did not sell. When questioned on not carrying the product, he replied “we will now!” Sure enough, that manufacturer beat a path to our door. It’s never failed me since. Favorite film Animal House Dogs or cats Dogs What's something few people know about you? I met my best friend, Gary, in high school detention during sophomore year. Eleven years later, he fixed me up with my now-wife on a blind date that neither one of us wanted to go on. Joanne was his fiancé Monique’s sorority sister. We were engaged in six weeks and married in six months. 45 years later, the four of us are still best friends, and live three miles apart. Best (and only!) Roman candle I ever set off down a school hallway!!! What's the most rewarding thing about what you do for a living? At this point in my career, the ability to mentor young people within my company is one of my greatest rewards. We work with a local organization which supports first generation and under-served college-bound students. We sponsor a number of these students as paid interns. Also within my company, we strongly encourage opportunities for both personal and professional growth and development. If no one had given me the opportunity, where would I be? Jeff Burgess particularly enjoys grilling and barbecuing - and appreciates spicy food What are your interests, hobbies and passions outside security? My passion is my wife and our family. I enjoy being with them and we have a special bond. My wife and I play golf and travel the world together, enjoy good food and friends. Or just stay home together. As for hobbies or interests, I really enjoy grilling and barbecuing (there IS a difference). I spent three years in Austin, Texas in the early ‘80’s and was tutored in this fine art. I have a beef brisket published at a spice house website, whose rub I use. Where was your last vacation? Our last vacation was Budapest, Berlin, and Copenhagen. I wrapped work meetings around the first and last stop, and had a wonderful work-free weekend in Berlin. We loved all of these new experiences. That tends to be the norm when we travel. But more excited about our next vacation. Taking a Barcelona-to-Barcelona cruise in mid-July. Never have cruised before and never have totally shut work off for two weeks. Doing both. Joanne has always wanted to cruise and deserves my time after 20 years sharing me with the company - she’s getting both.
