Baroness Henig was awarded a CBE for services to policing in 2000 The Security Institute has started 2016 by announcing a new President. Succeeding Lord Alex Carlile at the head of the organization from the 2016 AGM in April is former Security Industry Authority Chair, Baroness Ruth Henig. While at the SIA Baroness Henig was instrumental in overseeing a regulatory overhaul and the introduction of a new and modern, fit-for-purpose regulatory regime. Previous high profile roles Baroness Henig has held in the security sector include Chair of the Association of Police Authorities from 1997 to 2005, after which she became the Association's President. She was also a member of the National Criminal Justice Board from 2003 to 2005. Baroness Henig was awarded a CBE for services to policing in 2000. Announcing the appointment, Security Institute Chairman Garry Evanson said "We are delighted that we have been able to invite an industry heavyweight to be our President moving ahead into what I'm certain will be future steady growth across all areas of Institute activity. Baroness Henig, through her work with the SIA, has been instrumental in shaping the security sector and her vast experience and wise counsel comes at a welcome time for the Institute as it focuses on new horizons".
As Patron, Lord Carlile can remain an important figure whilst stepping back from the front line of involvement Lord Alex Carlile has been announced as the new Patron of the Security Institute when his tenure as President comes to an end at April's AGM of the organization. 8 Year Presidency Announcing the change of role, Institute Chairman Garry Evanson explained "Lord Carlile told me some time ago that he felt it was time for someone else to step into the breach as our President after 8 years in the role. I have to say that I can understand that wish after the hard work he has put into this organization throughout his tenure" Evanson went on "Neither party wished to break entirely the strong bond Lord Alex feels for the Security Institute and the role of Patron will allow him to remain an important figure in our ongoing development while stepping back from the front line of involvement. I want to thank Lord Alex for his hard work in furthering the aims of this professional body at a time when we expanded our activities significantly. The Board and membership are extremely grateful for his contribution to the Institute's success."
Rubens and White will be working closely alongside Garry Evanson and David Thorp to help them achieve their goals David Rubens CSyP and Michael White have been appointed board members of the Security Institute. Security Institute Chairman Garry Evanson CSyP said, "We have some demanding targets for this year and there's a lot to be achieved so I'm delighted to be welcoming two experienced and capable individuals onto the team. They will be working closely alongside me and David Thorp, our Managing Director, to help us achieve our goals." Previous Roles & Responsibilities Rubens has been involved in the UK security sector since 1992, being one of the original security trainers in the earliest days of the Westminster Council Door Supervisor training program. He ran his own consultancy from 1992-2013, under the names of Meido Consultants and David Rubens Associates, and was from December 2013 until recently MD of InfraSafe Security International, the international division of InfraSafe, a major US security technology company. He has also been involved in the academic side of security and risk management, completing his MSc at Scarman Center, Leicester University in 2006. He has consequently taught on a range of security related programmes at Leicester, Cranfield and the University of Portsmouth, where he studied for his Professional Doctorate, writing his thesis on strategic management of hyper-complex crisis events. Commenting on his appointment Rubens said, "I am really looking forward to returning to the board having served in the past. The Institute continues to be a leading voice in the promotion of the sector and the desire to increase the professionalisation of security practitioners. As someone who has experienced and benefitted from the academic side of security and risk management this is something I believe passionately in." Following careers in defense electronics and local government White joined the security industry in 2000 working on the South Coast managing a portfolio of accounts that included security provision to public sector, private sector and military locations. In 2003 he moved to London and has worked across multiple industry sectors that include shopping centers, diplomatic buildings, the financial sector, blue chip businesses and elements of the UK critical national infrastructure. He now works for himself as an independent security, risk management and training consultant. White recently completed his permitted term as the Chairman of the International Professional Security Association (IPSA) and is also a member of ASIS UK, The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals and the Institute of Leadership and Management. Commenting on his appointment White said, "I have been a very active member of the Events Committee at the Security Institute for a couple of years and have represented them on the Security Regulatory Alliance. I know board members and staff at HQ very well so feel I will quickly be able to become an effective part of the team."
The presentations were made by Institute Chairman Garry Evanson CSyP, FSyI Recently The Security Institute (SyI) recognized the contribution of two companies and two individuals who have supported the Institute over the last few years by hosting a presentation at Westminster Abbey. The presentations were made by Institute Chairman Garry Evanson CSyP, FSyI. Firstly, SyI recognized Insafe International for their continued support to a number of Institute events including sponsorship of the Annual Remembrance Event. The award was received by Alan Bullock MSyI. Secondly, Securigroup were formally thanked for organizing and sponsoring Scottish member events, including arranging speakers and organizing the conference facilities. The award was received by Russel Kerr MSyI. The Institute also recognized two individuals for their tireless support of SyI over the last few years. Tony Aston FSyI Gave Unending Commitment To Validation Board As Chairman of the Validation Board Working Group, Tony Aston FSyI has given unending commitment to the Validation Board, which is instrumental in awarding categories of membership and ensuring the process remains robust. Finally, for his continued support to the Institute CPD scheme and for helping to ensure that our system is fit for purpose, Peter Finch CSyP, FSyI was similarly recognized for his hard work in raising the standards expected of members by encouraging continuous development. Andrew Nicholls, Deputy Chairman said "The Institute is a volunteer organization which is dependent on the support of members who contribute towards its activities. It also relies on organizations to help sponsor our various events.” Institute Recognizes Special Work Contributed To Its Success By Its Members "It is therefore important that the Institute is able to recognize the special work contributed to its success by its members and supporters. It should also be able to recognize some exceptional act or achievement by Security Professionals who are not necessarily members.” "A large number of our members contribute in some way to the work of the Institute, as do a number of suppliers, so this scheme is designed to acknowledge people who have gone the extra mile and made a really special contribution towards the success of the Institute. We are an organization that exists for our members and we also need to acknowledge the generous support of our sponsors". Any member of the Institute are able to nominate an individual or organization for a 'Certificate of Appreciation'.
