It’s a concept none more relevant than to security professionals and business owners trying to ensure the safety of their organizations. As many security professionals predict, the new HD standard 4K or ‘Ultra HD’ continues to be a hot topic and the next natural step in the industry’s ongoing strive towards better image quality and greater surveillance camera coverage. In the surveillance world, 4K is expected to take its full effect in 2015 and beyond. Image quality is a core consideration and while everyone is talking about 4K, the real challenge is to optimize image quality for the particular task at hand, regardless of how bad it is or what the ambient conditions are. Technology that enhances image quality for advanced video applications will be a key innovation here and an industry driver. However, the advancements in image quality have created bigger pressure on managing the resources to support them. For example, they can have a significant impact on network bandwidth and storage requirements, increasing the need for more effective compression methods. Video surveillance-as-a-service (VSaaS) and cloud computing This is when video surveillance-as-a-service (VSaaS) becomes useful for managing and archiving video footage captured by surveillance cameras onto cloud storage. Video surveillance systems can be a powerful tool in preventing or investigating crime when installed in locations such as shopping centers, parks, banks, airports, and other public transport locations. Rapidly increasing demands for video surveillance systems have been driven by growing safety and security concerns worldwide. According to Transparency Market Research, the video surveillance and VSaaS market is expected to reach a value of $42.81billion by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 19.1% from 2013 to 2019. By system, the IP based video surveillance market is expected to grow rapidly at a CAGR of 24.2% during the forecast period from 2013 to 2019. The hardware market was valued at $9.49billion in 2012 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.3% during the forecast period from 2013 to 2019. It comprises of analog and IP-based video surveillance cameras, recorders and storage, encoders, and monitors. The recorders and storage segment held the largest share of 37% in 2012 of the total hardware market followed by surveillance cameras with a 32% share but is expected to lose share in the coming years due to a growing preference for cloud-based storage (VSaaS). Also, the share of surveillance cameras is expected to increase to around 46% by 2019 owing to the growing popularity of IP-based video surveillance cameras that offer better video quality and have in-built recorders. Rapidly increasing demands for video surveillance systems have been driven by growing safety and security concerns worldwide Cloud computing may well have been the buzzword in IT circles for several years, but a new era is very much upon us. Whether in a public environment, where tenancy on servers is shared with other customers, or in a private environment, where your data and applications are stored in isolation on a system, cloud computing brings three advantages to your network; redundancy, scalability and shifting costs from capital expenditure (CAPEX) to operating expenditure (OPEX). Depending on whether the cloud is hosted or run internally, there may also be the convenience of leaving routine maintenance like upgrades, updates and patches, to a third party. Cloud storage will inevitably grow and grow throughout 2015. A recent survey by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) in conjunction with Axis, questioned nearly 300 UK retailers, encompassing over 20,000 stores, about how they would like to access in-store surveillance footage and whether access from a mobile device would be beneficial. The results showed that majority of UK retailers (82%) wanted to view in-store video remotely – a rise of 6.5% from 2013. This obvious drive for the need to make ‘real time’ decisions based on the footage was reinforced with over 68% of retailers wishing to use a mobile device (eg. smartphone or tablet) to access in-store video. Scalability doesn’t just factor in the need for more cameras, it also enables access to more computing power and storage if, for example, a higher resolution or faster frame rate is needed. In another example, if analytics are needed for customer traffic pattern analysis, the processing capacity is already there and only paid for when required. Better functioning analytics running on the edge are also appropriate for critical infrastructure applications. For instance, the extra computing power could be used to store half a million car number plates and also capture registrations from cars driving past at up to 24 miles per hour. Another interesting aspect of VSaaS is that it offers users the possibility to add additional services to their video surveillance – such as guard force or remote monitoring services. Analytics, business intelligence (BI) and big data Analytics technology is also likely to finally take off within the surveillance industry from 2015 – enormous amounts of structured and unstructured data (big data) essential for gaining valuable insights. With network cameras’ capability to provide higher resolution video and to be connected from everywhere and around-the-clock, security departments are receiving more information from more sources. Therefore, more analytics are needed to help organizations make sense of the tremendous amount of information, such as images and videos. Increasingly intelligent applications are needed to help categorise and interpret the wealth of information, so it can be turned into something useful. The ‘three Vs’ of big data; volume, velocity, and variety, can provide vital information during a crisis by providing the right data at the right time. By starting with more factual data, such as surveillance footage, physical access control data, and cyber activity information and then building useful associations, costs can be reduced by only searching for the most relevant information. This is where IP video transforms the surveillance camera from a forensic tool aimed at solving problems to a proactive tool designed to improve business processes. According to the CRR retail survey, integration with BI applications was the single most important reason for UK retailers to migrate to IP video, with 27% citing it as their main driver. Nearly half of the UK retailers polled also said that people counting (49.2%) and queue management (49.9%) were the two most important non-security network IP applications that most interested them. Video images can be used in conjunction with analytical ‘horsepower’ to analyze retail customer traffic patterns and shopping behavior, as well as gather data to isolate bottlenecks in-store. Mix that up with other structured and unstructured data sources, including transit schedules, lists of promotions, competitor pricing data, social media etc. and a skilled data analyst can tease out patterns and relationships that retailers never knew existed – data that could give a significant competitive advantage. Video compression and bandwidth usage Video compression technologies are aimed at reducing and removing redundant video data so that a digital video file can be effectively sent over a network and stored on portable media. With efficient compression, a significant reduction in file size can be achieved with little or no adverse effect on the visual quality. The video quality, however, can be affected if the file size is reduced further by increasing the compression level for a given compression technique. There are several video compression standards including Motion JPEG, MPEG-4 Part 2 (simply referred to as MPEG-4) and H.264 – the latter being the latest and most efficient video compression standard and already the standard for video surveillance and other industries, such as entertainment. Ultimately, high quality images and videos such as 4K resolution needs to be supported by the right technologies At the same time, the continual improvement in image resolution and light sensitivity for example, also increase the data output from the cameras – imposing higher demands on the efficiency of the video compression. Video surveillance manufacturers need to balance the upsurge in resolution with improvements to H.264 compression algorithms to make sure network bandwidth and storage costs do not spiral out of control. A combined effort of working on noise reduction methods and bit rate reduction should run in parallel with investigation into new video codecs to get the best results. Beyond improvements in current H.264 compression, the future will embrace H.265 technology, which is rapidly gaining interest in the broadcast industry. H.265 can reduce bandwidth and storage demands by up to 50% under the right circumstances, so expect the technology to be introduced into the security industry over the next few years. It’s likely to be initially deployed in high-end, high-resolution cameras, and it’s expected that H.264 and H.265 will co-exist for a while within the industry. Conclusion Ultimately, high quality images and videos such as 4K resolution needs to be supported by the right technologies in order for organizations to get the most out of their data, which can be analyzed and turned into useful insight not only for security purposes, but also for efficiency to gain a competitive advantage. Axis Communications, a provider of network video products, recently hosted two Partner Showcase events in the UK and Sweden. More than 35 of Axis’ technology partners attended both events to showcase their technology innovations. The events provided an opportunity for those within the transport industry to learn about the latest trends and understand how network video and audio technology could help them create a safer and smarter environment for Europe’s commuters. National Railway Statistics Axis and its partners demonstrated how this could be achieved not only through enhanced security, but also by utilising data to derive business intelligence. Latest statistics suggest there were 392 billion passenger-kilometres traveled on national railway networks within Europe in 2015; there has been a 57% increase in rail journeys since 2005 in the UK; as well as 257 million journeys on light rail and tram systems in 2016, the highest figure since records began. As more of us use such means of transport, innovative technology will be crucial to ensure our safety. The Rise Of Machine Learning One of Axis’ technology partners utilising security data for increased intelligence is iCetana, experts in turning vast surveillance infrastructures into effective dynamic live monitoring systems. Axis Communications, a provider of network video, is celebrating its success at The Fraud Awards after winning the ‘Best Collaborative Solution’ category alongside The Metropolitan Police Service. The award recognized the pair’s ongoing commitment to deter and detect crime in retail environments by optimising camera placement and configuration to ensure fit for purpose images for the identification of offenders. Identifying Offenders With CORII The two organizations are working closely together to deliver the Camera Optimization for Retail to Improve Identifications (CORII) project. This aims to identify a single, fit for purpose, optimized camera configuration that will generate images that the police can use to make identifications, either automatically through a facial recognition system or by more traditional means, that lead to arrests, convictions and thus reduces crime. The total cost of crime in retail was £660m in 2016, of which £458m was attributed to theft. The CORII project included a full review of best practices for the capture, identification, storage, sharing and use of intelligence gathered by network camera technology. This facilitated the development of a framework for high street retailers on how to best utilize IP technology to reduce crime. Although not part of the CORII project, Axis’ network cameras, access controllers and video door stations can be easily combined with facial recognition technology to identify real-time security incidents, enabling immediate action to be taken by security and loss prevention staff. The results of this project, due to end in early 2018, will create guidance for CCTV users when designing or changing their systems. We don’t have to wait for new technology; we can prevent and detect more crime today by improving the way we use the technology already available to use. The National Business Crime Centre will publish the framework nationally.” Axis and The Metropolitan Police’s collaboration is promoting surveillance best practice to facilitate the genuine reduction of crime for all retailers, as opposed to merely displacing crime from those that are using sophisticated network camera analytics to stores that aren’t. The focus is to encourage a wider deployment of technology in all stores on UK high streets, leading to the overall reduction of organized retail crime. Axis Communications, the global provider of intelligent surveillance technology, yesterday held the official launch of the new Axis Experience Center in Luton. The event was a chance for Axis’ partners to meet with the senior management team and explore how the new center operates, all the while celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary over a glass of champagne. The center was officially opened by Axis Communications co-founder Martin Gren, along with Bodil Sonesson, the company’s VP of Global Sales. The toast was led by Atul Rajput, Regional Director, Northern Europe. As one of Axis’ first ever employees, Rajput was particularly well placed to thank partners for their collaboration over the last twenty years. Exploring The Axis Experience Center What immediately became apparent was that this was no ordinary showroom. In contrast to open-space demonstration rooms traditionally favored by the security industry, the Experience Center takes end users on a flowing tour where they can experience Axis solutions in a variety of environments simulating real-world problems. The tour typically takes two hours, and is designed for small groups of people to allow in-depth discussion of the difficulties end users are facing. Typical end user problems highlighted by the tour include queue management, people counting and intrusion detection. The solutions are all fully interactive – on passing through a gateway, an audio alert notifies participants that they are trespassing, while three participants standing in a given space can trigger air conditioning and ambient audio. The most immersive part of the experience is the ‘dark room’, which simulates all kinds of challenging lighting conditions including the intense backlight that may be experienced at a building entrance or window. On leaving the room, participants are shown how Axis’ WDR cameras capture extremely detailed images despite the challenging illumination. Other highlights include the networking center, which demonstrates Axis hardware and third-party switches, and the VMS control room, which features a new user interface and can be integrated with intercoms, speakers, and access control systems. Smart Solutions For Businesses And Cities The overriding theme of all areas of the tour is the emphasis on applications, not products. Rather than being directed to a particular product to suit a given vertical market, end users and installers are encouraged to discuss the real-world challenges they face, and explore how Axis solutions could work for them. In this way, enterprises, small-to-medium businesses and Smart City providers can all be catered for. Research shows owners of retail, office and hospitality businesses seek smarter technology to tackle theft and loss A survey of small businesses in the UK has discovered that 84% of retail, office and hospitality owners are looking for video surveillance with high resolution images and intelligent features such as remote monitoring to provide superior security for their premises. 85% also stated that high quality and reliability would be important purchasing considerations when looking to invest in video surveillance. The survey demonstrates a wide consensus amongst small business owners that current surveillance solutions in place are not viable to provide the necessary proof of crime at a time when the cost of shop theft is at an all-time high. It also reveals that new technology is sought to provide the required security level within their business. Video Surveillance Key Challenges Axis Communications, the provider of network video, carried out the survey to establish small business owners’ key challenges regarding video surveillance and how they believe it could be improved. In addition to stating that high quality images and the ability to access footage remotely on a smart phone or other device is desirable, 70% also stated that ease-of-use is also high on the agenda. In light of accessible intelligent technology, 82% of small business owners are considering new video surveillance technology for their premises to provide a more up-to-date solution. The survey also demonstrated challenges currently faced by small business owners in regards to their existing video surveillance solutions. A number of factors were revealed as unsatisfactory within their present set up including poor quality of images and difficulty of use. These small business owners reported facing issues with their current video surveillance including “bad quality of system”, “lack of ability to monitor outside of premises” and providing “limited proof of crime”. This feedback further confirms the desire for more intelligent surveillance solutions to help protect businesses and make staff feel safe. H.265 compression continued to be a popular topic from exhibitors on the second day of IFSEC Video beyond security, compression, HD over analog and integration were on the lips of several exhibitors at IFSEC International 2016. Strangely for a security exhibition, there were plenty of exhibitors talking about non-security applications on the second day of IFSEC International in London. For Axis Communications, Atul Rajput, Regional Director for Northern Europe, said the Internet of Things will have a big impact on security systems. Having been a leader in the IP video space, Axis is now involved in applications such as audio, intercoms and HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) -- all over IP. Looking ahead, in five to 10 years, the Internet of Things will include sensors that can report back information such as environmental data and the interconnectivity in smart homes. “Now we’re involved in access control, horn speakers and retail analytics such as people-counting,” said Rajput. Over at Hanwha Techwin, a press conference highlighted one pioneering application -- using video to monitor a person’s vital signs such as breathing and heart-rate. Such a set-up could, for example, be used to monitor the wellbeing of detainees in police custody. Again today, H.265 compression was mentioned as a popular feature among exhibitors. Hanwha Techwin uses its own Wisestream compression technology in addition to H.265. The company says Wisestream can deliver up to a 50 percent reduction in bandwidth, with this rising to 75 percent if used with H.265. To put it another way, when you combine both with 4K images, the bandwidth required is the same as that for HD video. H.265 Not The Only Compression Standard In Town But not everyone has been carried away by H.265. The folks at Axis use something called Zipstream compression and H.264; the thinking is that most video management systems don’t yet support H.265. Zipstream uses a dynamic frame rate that reduces the rate to its lowest when a scene is static, then increases it when there is movement or activity. Say you reduce your video storage by half, it translates into needing less hardware and less cooling, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the end-user. Another big talking point was HD over analog, or AHD. At Hanwha Techwin, for example, where they have a full range of AHD cameras and NVRs, they say the technology has “taken the market by storm” – especially in the UK, southern Europe and even Nordic countries. It seems existing analog infrastructures, their ease of installation and low cost of implementation account for the high demand for this video technology. Partnerships and integration were also big themes at this year’s show, as Milestone promoted their Open Platform Community Partnerships Lead To Better Security Solutions Partnerships and integration were also big themes at this year’s show. VMS (video management system) supplier Milestone Systems announced what it describes as a “deep level partnership” with access control specialists Nedap. “Milestone always [was] an open platform company because we couldn’t do everything ourselves,” said Kenneth Petersen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer. “We now want to take this to the next level to be an open platform community. Together with our partners, we can offer the best solutions.” Sieger Volkers, Managing Director of Security Management at Nedap, said: “The best of video management and access control will be combined into a solid, seamlessly integrated security solution. We’re committed to developing a deep integration between our access control platform AEOS and [Milestone’s] XProtect, reducing delivery risks and complexity for our mutual partners.” Hardware And Software In Harmony With this approach, Milestone hopes to provide more certainty about different software and hardware working well together, which should make life easier for integrators too, who are just beginning to integrate IP access control and video. A deep partnership, however, does not merely involve working together from a technical perspective but also with commercial operations such as sales and marketing. Milestone also announced a new global partnership with one of its existing partners, Dell OEM Solutions, which helps customers who have their own intellectual property to bring their technology to market. Dell will be able to fully test Milestone’s VMS and can simulate large camera systems, showing customers how their systems will perform before committing to them. Finally, speaking of VMS, AxxonSoft has brought these systems to a whole new level. The company was demonstrating what is said to be the first video transmission to a VMS from an HD-equipped drone. It incorporates a 14MP fisheye lens camera, flies at a height of up to 150 meters and can deliver images wirelessly within a 2km range. It is capable of providing video analytics and face recognition and should be available later this year.

Axis has a new camera that “shakes like a dog” when it rains -- to get rid of the extra moisture. KiwiSecurity, an Austrian company and IFSEC newcomer, uses video analytics to scramble images of faces in live video to ensure privacy.These were two of the surprising things I saw on Day Two of IFSEC. Attendance picked up nicely in the halls of London’s ExCeL -- and the show floor seemed to get bigger as the day wore on (at least according to my weary feet!). There definitely were more things to see than time to see them. Genetec's Integration With KiwiVisionThe video analytics system that scrambles faces on live video shared a little corner of Genetec’s stand. The KiwiVision Privacy Protector capability is just one of several intelligent functions of the product, with which Genetec has developed a close integration. Other functions include the more familiar license plate recognition, queue detection, intrusion detection, etc.Genetec is also looking to help end user customers make sense of the “Wild West” of body-worn cameras, which are facing rapid growth. Genetec offers a solution to incorporate body-worn camera feeds into its video management system (VMS). Managing the video from body-worn cameras is an important -- and so far overlooked -- consideration amid the rapid implementation of the cameras, says Andrew Elvish, Genetec’s Vice President, Marketing and Product Management. Axis And Canon Growth PlanThe Axis Q61-E Series camera has “Sharpdome technology” to provide sharp images in all directions -- it looks more like a globe than a typical dome camera. The compact PTZ camera is suitable for indoor or outdoor applications, in low light and challenging conditions.The “Speed Dry” function removes water drops from the dome glass (using canine-like vibration) -- to supply sharp images in rainy weather. Genetec is also looking to help end user customers make sense of the “Wild West” of body-worn cameras, which are facing rapid growth There was other news from Axis, too, already arguably the biggest newsmaker in the security market in the last year given its planned acquisition by Canon. At a press conference, Axis again emphasized it will be “business as usual” after the acquisition and that Axis will continue to operate separate from the Japanese giant. (In fact, Canon has not yet acquired the needed 90 percent of shares; therefore Axis is still trading on the Swedish stock exchange. However, eventual completion of the transaction is all but a certainty.)If anything, the new owners have accelerated the Axis growth path. Axis announced on the second day of IFSEC its plans to build a new 350,000-square-foot (32,000-square-meter) state-of-the-art headquarters directly adjacent to its current location in Lund, Sweden. Building on the new headquarters will begin in January 2016 with completion expected in 2018. The new nine-floor building will accommodate company growth up to 1,100 employees (some of the existing facilities will be retained.)“The Axis product, innovation and sales structure will remain the same,” says Atul Rajput, Axis regional director, Northern Europe. “We will also gain access to Canon’s knowledge and technology, which will be a foundation for future joint cooperation and benefits. These areas include image technology, manufacturing technology, procurement power, and a strong patent portfolio.”As far as industry trends, Rajput points to a transition from forensic use of video to deterrence and even to real-time detection. New tools like audio analytics, which can mimic the human ear’s abilities to differentiate various sounds, from gun shots to breaking glass, will enable better real-time response. Other trends include “surveillance as a service” -- and, in fact “everything as a service” -- with more functionality migrating to the cloud. Video will also be used increasingly to improve business efficiency (beyond security). Axis will be looking for growth beyond its current focus on video surveillance for security. They have a new camera for broadcast/video conferencing applications. Even beyond cameras, they are looking at temperature alarms to monitor if physical equipment overheats. Axis has already introduced an IP-enabled audio/video door intercom system and a network horn speaker. HID Global Seos “We see a clear requirement for open standards within these countries (EMEA),” says Volker Kunz, HID Global Director of Sales, EMEA Physical Access Control Another big supplier at IFSEC is HID Global, which sees a demand for high security in access control, especially in vertical markets such as utilities, energy, aviation, finance and banking. Throughout the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region, demand is strong among enterprise-class customers, typically the top 100 companies in each country (and many of the top 500). “We see a clear requirement for open standards within these countries,” says Volker Kunz, HID Global Director of Sales, EMEA Physical Access Control. There is also demand for custom keys and other specific formats to increase security levels, varying for each end user.“From an EMEA perspective, especially in the northern part, there is a requirement for a lot of customization, personalising of credentials -- they want us to give them that fully programmed solution,” says Kunz.At IFSEC, HID Global is showing of the Seos “Tap In” functionality, which can be used to tap into applications in a tablet environment, for example. There are already 2,400 apps that support the capability, according to HID Global.Seos is HID Global’s open mobile ID system that can run on various media, whether a mobile device, a card, or whatever, providing companies more options in terms of how they run their access control systems. Using a smartphone as a credential is especially desirable in applications where there is a lot of turnover among users -- such as colleges and universities. Enterprise customers may still require a physical badge/photo ID (therefore less likely to go to smart phone credentialing).“Seos allows us to create a new ecosystem with partners, including the mechanical lock sister companies in Assa Abloy,” says Spencer Marshall, HID Global Regional Sales Manager, Northern Europe. Kunz points to the importance of combining convenience with security -- inconvenient security measures will cause users to bypass them to the detriment of overall security. Axxonsoft Global Expansion AxxonSoft, a VMS vendor, is among the many companies at IFSEC that are supplying a global market but with an eye to addressing the varied needs of each local area. In the last year, AxxonSoft has established more offices around the world, in Morocco and South Africa. By the end of the year, they will open an office in the United Kingdom. They are currently working on a huge city surveillance project in the Emirate of Sharjah. “We are one of the top VMSs used in the the Middle East,” says Yury Akhmetov, AxxonSoft business development director. “We started early doing business there and are very well known. We are so busy with large projects we don’t do the smaller projects.”“Localisation of all the materials is very important,” says Akhmetov. They are starting to develop business in French-speaking countries in northern Africa, and will be looking to localise their offerings in Turkish, Polish, Mandarin, Serbian and Bulgarian. Developing New Markets Large companies like Milestone also have to think local and act local in a global market. Implementing Milestone’s global strategy in the EMEA region involves a local approach for each region -- investment in training, demo facilities, marketing materials, more resources, and native speaking employees. “We understand the market needs of each locale in a very detailed way,” says Thomas Lausten, Milestone’s vice president, EMEA. “We develop each market in response to data we receive from talking to more end users -- what is the essential piece in a VMS for retail, or other verticals?” Milestone adapts to each area’s need with information gleaned by talking to customers, integrators and consultants, and from feedback about where they are succeeding. More R&D enables a fast response to localised needs.However, there are universal needs across multiple localities: “We need to be easy to deploy, and everything needs to be based on scalability,” says Lausten. “We grow with existing partners, who are becoming bigger and bigger.”

Andrew Martin joins Axis Communications as a retail business development manager Axis Communications, the global market leader in network video has made a positive start to the New Year with a key appointment to its northern European senior management team. Andrew Martin, joins Axis as a retail business development manager and will be based in Watford. Following a successful early career with West Yorkshire Police, Andrew has worked in retail security, loss prevention and operations for over 25 years, both in-house and as a consultant, holding senior management posts at Dixons, HMV and Fopp and advising brands such as Apple, Waitrose and Jessops. Prior to joining Axis, he headed up the loss prevention team at Morrisons supermarkets where he was responsible for the identification of loss throughout the entire supply chain, covering 30 sites and overseeing a team of loss prevention managers, specialists and officers. Commenting on his appointment, Andrew said: “I have worked with Axis as an end user, in a consultative role in the past and have always been impressed with both its products and its people. A solution using Axis cameras and Milestone XProtect was developed to reduce shrinkage across the site Automotive servicing business Tractamotors has realised a 60% reduction in losses for the retail arm of its business following the installation of nearly 50 Axis network cameras to its site in Cavan, Ireland. Axis Communications and partner, Encom, developed a feature-rich, state-of–the-art solution that combined Axis network cameras and a Milestone XProtect video surveillance system, to replace its legacy analog system and increase coverage to protect staff, monitor health and safety and reduce shrinkage across the 2½ acre site. Atul Rajput, Axis’ regional director, northern Europe said: “Tractamotors was suffering from patchy coverage from an antiquated analog CCTV system. The site consisted of an administrative area, garage, retail hardware store, trade yard and a small agricultural machinery division. Its location on a busy main road toward Dublin meant that it received a lot of customer traffic as well as frequent supplier deliveries, which all required close surveillance monitoring to reduce incidents of theft and vandalism and to protect staff and customers.” Tractamotors initially investigated an upgrade to its current analog CCTV system but after testing a hybrid digital video recording package, it decided to make the switch from analog to digital. Ciaran Murray, IT manager at Tractamotors, explained: “We looked at other solutions but, in the end, decided that we wanted something truly digital. Encom’s proposal, using Axis network cameras and Milestone XProtect was the perfect solution.” Over 40 AXIS M32 Series fixed dome network cameras were installed in the hardware and retail areas of the business in order to minimize stock loss and reduce incidents of theft. Encom was able to integrate elements of the existing analog system into the new IP solution with the use of Axis video encoders. Tractamotor’s shop floor had lots of aisles, obscured by shelving, with no clear field of view. To overcome this, Axis’ Corridor Format was used in conjunction with the AXIS M3204 Network camera to rotate the video’s aspect ratio to a portrait view. "Encom’s proposal, using Axis network cameras and Milestone XProtect was the perfect solution" Coverage in the store was increased from 25% to 80% with the new Axis cameras and incidents have been reduced by an average of 60% overall. Ciaran continued: “The main priority was to reduce pilfering in the store area and increase camera coverage, as our previous system only protected limited high-risk zones. As we were still fairly satisfied with some of the co-axial cameras, we were pleased that they were able to be incorporated into the overall solution.” Camera count was also increased in other parts of the site to address the health and safety concerns in the tire and refitting areas of the business. Atul explained: “In total, 48 Axis network cameras were installed across the site. All entrances and exits are now closely monitored so that managers can keep an eye on stock deliveries and any unauthorized out-of-hours access – live footage can even be monitored remotely via an iPad.” Ciaran concluded: “We are happy with the system. Stock control is much more robust and the overall security of the site has been tightened up considerably. Axis and Encom will be our first port of call for any future solutions.”
The migration from analogue CCTV to network IP continues to be of huge importance to the retail industry According to the latest annual Centre for Retail Research (CRR) survey into the use of CCTV in retail – commissioned by Axis Communications, the global market leader in network video – over 60% of UK retailers are planning to adopt network IP in the next three years and nearly a third have adopted it already, up from a quarter in 2012. Of the 278 UK retailers that responded, encompassing some 20,350 stores, the data showed that 92.8% currently use CCTV. Of these, 32.1% have already upgraded to network IP technology – representing a 2.5% rise in take up from the previous year’s figures. This trend is even more pronounced across the wider northern European region, with 58.5% (weighted average) of analogue users now planning to switch to network IP – representing a significant increase of 17% on 2012 figures. The survey, now in its fourth year, polled 2,200 retailers, and received 673 respondents from across northern Europe. The results of the survey are being presented today at the Retail Fraud Show in Leicester by Atul Rajput, regional director, northern Europe at Axis Communications and Professor Joshua Bamfield, director at the CRR. Reacting to the results, Atul commented: “The migration from analogue CCTV to network IP continues to be of huge importance to the retail industry with the majority of UK retailers (60.3%) now planning to convert in the next three years, with over three quarters (77.1%) of those owning a retail estate of between 26 and 500 stores. This is therefore likely to be the biggest single factor impacting on retail security as digital surveillance and network video become the standard. Certainly for the UK, I believe that the migration to network IP has become the norm and it is no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ the technology will be adopted. “The survey suggests that customer theft is still the biggest security challenge facing retailers at the moment, as nearly a quarter (24.2%) said that their main reason for using CCTV is to prevent or investigate theft and a huge 80% of respondents cited prevention of internal or external theft and better safety as the main driver for the use of CCTV. “The UK as a whole has embraced the benefits that CCTV can bring and the country’s retailers are no exception. 22% of those surveyed stated that the main benefit of CCTV was to reduce theft with an estimated average fall in loss of 15% - the highest prediction in northern Europe and up on the previous year. Couple this with the fact that 14% of respondents cite ‘quality of image’ as an important driver for the use of network video – a 40% increase on the previous year – and it’s clear to see that the high definition images that network video can offer, are critically important for retailers in driving down theft and improving safety.” The survey also asked respondents about their attitudes toward potential future application systems and networks for digital surveillance, including non-security issues. Over a quarter (27%) cited ‘integration with business intelligence applications’ as the main reason for adopting network IP – the highest in the UK and across northern Europe. "The survey clearly highlights the continued move towards IP-based camera systems across the retail sector" “High street stores are still the origin of most retail transactions but carry the highest overheads, so the need to reduce cost and complexity of in-store surveillance systems and, at the same time, ‘sweat the assets’ further, is vital. This is where network IP really has the advantage as it can be used to improve both service and sales, not just security, to deliver a real return on investment. “The use of cloud-based video systems has shown an increase in interest from UK retailers and so too has the interest around non-security applications. Nearly half (49.9%) of respondents were interested in queue management and people counting (49.2%) as new tools to improve both operational sales and marketing performance. “As well as the rise of non-security applications, big data, cloud and mobile technologies are all trends that are impacting on the retail sector. As network video is an open platform solution and can seamlessly allow integration with these technologies, it can help to maximise the return on in-store video investment by extending its use beyond pure surveillance into a business optimisation tool.” Professor Joshua Bamfield, director at CRR added: “The survey clearly highlights the continued move towards IP-based camera systems across the retail sector, a growing trend that is driven by the need for HD-quality images and the increased adoption and use of business-focussed analytics - two areas where IP systems demonstrate a clear advantage over older technologies. It further suggests that retailers continue to appreciate the added benefits that an IP-based system can deliver which is evident in the high convergence rate each year.” The ‘CCTV in Retail’ survey was commissioned by global market leader in network video, Axis Communications and was run in conjunction with the Centre for Retail Research in Nottingham. Now in its fourth year, it surveyed 2,200 retailers both large and small from a wide variety of sectors and attracted 673 responses from retailers in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The research was carried out by the CRR between July and August 2014 and follows similar Axis-commissioned surveys in 2013, 2012 and 2010.
