The Aperio off-line locking solution allows free egress via the lock handle when required and the use of the clients preferred Mifare credentials

ASSA ABLOY’s innovative Aperio locking solution has been fitted by local installers HE Simm at a £42million student accommodation complex in the heart of Liverpool.

Vine Court, a BREEAM excellent project on Chatham Street, forms part of the University of Liverpool’s extensive sustainable accommodation programme. Comprising shops, a 250-seat restaurant and 749 en-suite bedrooms, the residences benefit from rainwater harvesting, solar thermal water heating and low energy lighting and heating systems.

Following a tendering process held by Ocon Construction through their M&E contractor HE Simms, ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio™ smart technology proved to be the most cost effective and easy to install security solution to enable a wire-free deployment, without any need to modify the doors.

In phase one, over 980 E900 Aperio Mifare Data-on-Card units have been installed by HE Simm under the careful guidance of contractors, OCON Construction.  All of the Aperio™ off-line escutcheons have been seamlessly integrated into the AGS Access Control System by OEM Partner ACS Ltd.

Darren Clark, Senior Projects Manager at the University of Liverpool said: “The University of Liverpool is undergoing a significant sustainable programme of refurbishment, with circa £250million alone committed to student accommodation to continue to inspire students on a global scale. Vine Court is an important part of this scheme.

“Aperio™ appealed to us because of its innovative design and ability to work as an integral part of the wider AGS security solution - which can encompass hard wired, wireless and fire free access control.  The team worked carefully to ensure the delivery of really high quality residences for students and we believe this phase is only the first step to creating a keyless world for all student accommodation at The University of Liverpool.”

The Aperio™ off-line locking solution allows free egress via the lock handle when required and the use of the clients preferred Mifare credentials.  It was an important additional requirement that the system could be migrated to DESFire at a later time - without changing door hardware.

In a similar manner, The University of Liverpool can also migrate to Aperio™ wireless on-line should they need to take advantage of real time audits and instant updates of access restrictions through the existing access control system.

Sean Eddleston from OCON Construction, who managed work at Vine Court added: “Security at university accommodation must be very carefully considered as students today often carry high value equipment and personal possessions.  Add to that the turnover of people with building specific area access, and finding a security system can prove difficult.  ASSA ABLOY has delivered on all fronts, with Aperio™ leading the way to upgrading the controllability and security level of any premises.”

ASSA ABLOY Aperio™ escutcheons were fitted alongside ASSA ABLOY new UNION keyULTRA™ masterkey system to secure over 1500 doors and cupboards, 2C25 night latch cases added to the security of individual bedrooms.

Tabitha Morton, Sales Director at ASSA ABLOY Access Control concluded: “The key to the success of this first phase works programme for The University of Liverpool is down to the close working partnership of all parties involved, right from specification, through to final inspections and handover. The result is a high quality, stylish solution that stands to set the trend for the future security arrangements of university student accommodation in Liverpool.”
