Detection Technology, a pioneer in X-ray detector solutions, addresses increasing inspection and quality assurance requirements in the defense industry with its proven and expanded X-Panel XL series of extra-large X-ray flat panel detectors. The series combines large-area imaging, high-speed acquisition, and high-energy imaging performance to support efficient inspection of defense systems and critical components in demanding production environments. Safety-critical assemblies Demand for non-destructive testing (NDT) is increasing as manufacturers scale production of defense systems and components, including drones, missiles, ammunition, aircraft structures, propulsion systems, turbine blades, and other safety-critical assemblies. The X-Panel XL series addresses these requirements with large-area imaging, high frame rates, and single-glass a-Si TFT technology that support efficient inspection workflows and increased system throughput. "Across the defense industry, production volumes are increasing while quality requirements remain uncompromising. Manufacturers are looking for inspection solutions that can scale with production without sacrificing reliability," said Juha Talasmäki, Vice President, Business Development at Detection Technology. Scanning of multiple objects "Historically, 100% quality assurance has often been time-consuming due to inspection throughput limitations. Advances in X-ray imaging now enable efficient inspection of significantly larger volumes of critical components. For example, five 155 mm artillery shells can be seamlessly inspected in a single scan." The throughput benefits of large-area detector technology have also been demonstrated in collaboration with the German Fraunhofer IIS, one of the world’s pioneer applied research organizations. Fraunhofer's PolyCT technology enables simultaneous scanning of multiple objects, while Detection Technology's X-Panel 43108a provides the large imaging area required for efficient multi-object CT acquisition. Industrial computed tomography Michael Salamon, Group Manager, High-Energy X-ray Systems, Fraunhofer IIS, commented: "We placed our PolyCT rotation stage in front of DT’s X-Panel 43108a detector to scan five objects simultaneously. We achieved excellent CT results in the shortest possible time while maximizing the throughput of our high-energy CT system. Combined with downstream automated evaluation routines, this is a real game-changer for industrial CT." The X-Panel XL series includes the X-Panel 43108a and the recently launched X-Panel 4386a detector solutions. Depending on configuration, the detectors support X-ray tube applications up to 750 kVp and linear accelerator applications up to 16 MV. Combined with high-speed 10G Ethernet connectivity, multiple scintillator options, and frame rates of up to 90 fps, the series supports demanding industrial computed tomography (CT) and digital radiography (DR) applications where throughput, image quality, and reliability are critical. Efficient system integration The X-Panel XL series complies with applicable international industry, safety, and environmental standards, supporting efficient system integration and certification processes. EU-origin deliveries of the X-Panel XL series are planned to begin during the second half of 2026. Detection Technology is showcasing the X-Panel XL series and Fraunhofer IIS's PolyCT system concept at ECNDT 2026, the European Conference on Non-Destructive Testing, taking place in Verona, Italy, on 15–19 June 2026. Visitors can meet Detection Technology at stand 140–141.
Detection Technology, a global pioneer in X-ray detector solutions, announces the launch of the X-Panel 4386a FPI, the latest addition to its X-Panel XL series of large-area thin-film transistor (TFT) flat panel detectors. Building on the strong market response to the single-glass X-Panel XL platform, the new detector extends the product family with industry-leading speed and an optimized large-area form factor featuring a 430 × 860 mm active area for high-speed industrial computed tomography (CT) imaging applications. The X-Panel XL series, originally launched with X-Panel 43108 variants, addresses the growing demand for high-throughput inspection of large objects in industrial imaging. Developed in close collaboration with customers, the X-Panel 4386a FPI expands the product family with a 430 x 860 mm active area detector for demanding dynamic imaging applications. Imaging system designs “The launch of the X-Panel 4386 as a successor to the X-Panel 43108 demonstrates our commitment to continuously expanding the capabilities of the X-Panel XL series,” said Tuomas Holma, Product Director at Detection Technology. “Customers have shown tremendous interest in large-area dynamic detectors that improve throughput and imaging quality while enabling entirely new system concepts. The X-Panel 4386 enables faster and more flexible industrial imaging system designs.” The X-Panel 4386a FPI features dual-side readout architecture that enables frame rates of up to 15 fps in full-resolution mode, 45 fps in 3x3 binning mode, and 90 fps in 6x6 binning mode. This makes the detector more than five times faster than many competing large-area detector solutions currently available on the market. High acquisition speed The detector is based on a-Si TFT technology with a 140 µm pixel size and a pixel matrix of 3072 x 6144. It provides an active imaging area of 430 x 860 mm and supports 10G BASE-T connectivity for high-speed data transfer. The detector is optimized for high-energy X-ray tube imaging applications, with scintillator options including DRZ-Plus and Cesium Iodide (CsI). The X-Panel 4386a FPI has been specifically designed for applications requiring large-area imaging combined with high acquisition speed. These include: Industrial CT and digital radiography (DR) systems Automotive inspection of large assemblies and battery systems Aerospace inspection of composite structures such as fuselage and wing sections Inspection of heavy castings and large industrial components Defense and ammunition inspection Conveyor-based manufacturing inspection systems Several important advantages Compared to conventional large-area dynamic detectors, the single-glass X-Panel XL series provides several important advantages. Its large active area allows imaging of large objects with fewer scans, improving productivity while reducing stitching artifacts. The series’ high frame rate enables significantly faster CT acquisition, reducing inspection time and increasing system throughput. The compact form factor also enables more flexible cabinet X-ray and system designs. The series has been engineered for robust operation in industrial environments. It is compliant with applicable international EMC, safety, environmental, and industry standards, supporting smooth system integration and certification processes for OEM customers. Flexible supply capabilities The series is globally available with both EU-origin and China-origin manufacturing options, supporting customers worldwide with flexible supply capabilities and local support. Demo units and technical support are available for application testing and system integration. Customer deliveries for the X-Panel 43108 have already started, while deliveries for the X-Panel 4386 are planned to begin at the end of 2026. Detection Technology will showcase the X-Panel XL series and its comprehensive product line of flat panel and line scan X-ray detectors at ECNDT 2026, the European Conference on Non-Destructive Testing.
