The sailings may take as little as 22 minutes, but carrying almost 4.5 million holidaymakers and Islanders to and from the Isle of Wight every year is a huge challenge. It is perhaps not surprising therefore to discover that Wightlink has invested in the latest video security technology to help them do so safely and efficiently. The team at award-winning ferry operator Wightlink knows more than a thing or two about giving Islanders a frequent and punctual service to mainland Hampshire, as well as offering visitors an easy way to enjoy a taste of Island life. Providing ferry services Through its forerunners, Wightlink has been providing ferry services to and from the Isle of Wight for more than 160 years. As the cross-Solent ferry operator, Wightlink in a normal year would complete approximately 45,000 sailings over three routes with the help of a fleet of ships which includes six vehicle and passenger ferries and two passenger-only FastCats. Hanwha Techwin Europe’s Managing Director Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., recently traveled to Portsmouth to see first-hand how Wisenet cameras are being used to assist Wightlink in almost every aspect of their day-to-day operations. Bob was accompanied by Jeff (Chae Won) Lee, the company’s Sales Director and Senior Strategic Sales Manager, Jon Hill. High definition images Wightlink’s crew are also making good use of the high definition images captured by the weather-proof cameras Over 260 Wisenet cameras have already been installed around Wightlink’s Portsmouth and Lymington facilities, as well as on three of the company’s ships. With safety of paramount importance, some of the cameras are being used to help verify any health & safety incidents which might occur in one of the terminals or onboard the ships. On the bridge, Wightlink’s crew are also making good use of the high definition images captured by the weather-proof cameras mounted at the bow and stern of the ships, which are assisting them with great precision to dock safely and efficiently. In addition, cameras supporting ANPR have also been deployed at various locations to ensure the smooth flow, identification and tracking of vehicles through every stage of their journey. IP network video surveillance The day was organized by Jim Kernahan, Managing Director of Trellisworks, a system integrator with extensive experience of designing, installing and maintaining IP network video surveillance, wireless and mobile network solutions. “The visit provided an excellent opportunity for Bob (H.Y.) Hwang and his colleagues to see how the Wisenet cameras were being put to good use,” said Jim. “However, our prime objective was to meet with members of the Wightlink team to explore how Trellisworks and Hanwha Techwin can continue to work in partnership to assist them in capitalizing on the latest advances in technology.” Hybrid energy ferry Stuart James, Wightlink’s Marketing and Innovation Director, who has the task of devising and driving the company’s strategy of continual improvement by wisely investing in new technologies and systems, provided a guided tour of the company’s Portsmouth harbor facilities and its newest and environmentally-friendly hybrid energy ferry, Victoria of Wight. We were able to generate a number of good ideas on how we can build on the success of the existing cameras" “I was pleased to host the visit and take the opportunity to express our appreciation and satisfaction with how well Trellisworks and Hanwha Techwin have been working together for our benefit,” said Stuart. “Most importantly, we were able to generate a number of good ideas on how we can build on the success of the existing cameras.” The discussions which followed on from the tour focused on how the latest technology might assist Wightlink to further enhance safety and security by supporting on shore staff and the ships’ crews, as well as ensuring every passenger has the best possible customer experience. Video security solutions Among the options considered were specialist video applications, such as passenger counting and queue management which can be run on-board Wisenet cameras and AI Deep Learning solutions. Commenting on the visit, Bob (H.Y.) Hwang said: “We are very grateful to Stuart for providing us with a great insight into Wightlink operational requirements and also to the company’s CEO, Keith Greenfield, who kindly took the time to greet us.” “We are understandably delighted that a prestigious and superbly well-run company such as Wightlink has placed its trust in Hanwha Techwin to provide effective and future proof video security solutions. We are looking forward to working ever more closely with Trellisworks, which is a member of our STEP partnership program, to ensure together we are always able to exceed Wightlink’s expectations.”

Highest Level Of Pre- And Post-Sales Support “To have a brand name which is trusted, it is of course not sufficient just to have products which are better than our competitors’ or for them to be more affordable,” said Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D. “We also need to demonstrate a long-term commitment to provide customers with the highest levels of pre- and post-sales support. “In this respect, our ‘WE MOVE with trust’ message encompasses respect for our distribution and solution partners, our passion for quality & service and an extended 5-year warranty support which we offer to our STEP partners as part of a package of benefits to reward their loyalty and give them a competitive edge.” Testing Cyber Security Risks Hanwha Techwin has declared its intention to continually monitor and test cyber security risks using third party security agenciesDetermined not to be complacent, Hanwha Techwin has declared its intention to continually monitor and test cyber security risks using third party security agencies and a dedicated cyber security team. When necessary, it will release in quick time new firmware to counter the latest threats. Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D. is predicting that 2019 will be another year of substantial growth for Hanwha Techwin. “This is an exciting time for our security business. The year has already begun well with the recent announcement that our new manufacturing facility in Vietnam is fully operational. This is just one of many reasons why I am confident we will continue to succeed and be competitive in a market that continues to grow. At Hanwha Techwin, we continue to ‘MOVE with trust’.”
Hanwha Techwin has announced that its new 54,543 sq. meters manufacturing facility at the Que Vo Industrial Park in the Bacninh Province of Vietnam is now fully operational. Increase Manufacturing Output The strategic decision made in April 2017 to continue the expansion of Hanwha Techwin’s global security business by way of US$ 100 million investment in the new Vietnam-based facility, has been supported by the Vietnam government’s ‘Friendly Policy’ and the securing of various logistics channels for import and export through land and neighboring ports. The new facility offers Hanwha Techwin the opportunity to considerably increase manufacturing output and reduce costs. Logistics will also be greatly improved, ensuring that orders from the company’s distribution partners are fulfilled more efficiently and on time. Wisenet Video Surveillance Products “I am pleased to report that a significant percentage of Wisenet video surveillance products will be shipped from Vietnam from the beginning of January 2019.” said Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., Managing Director of Hanwha Techwin Europe. “This is a very exciting time for Hanwha Techwin’s security business. Our new manufacturing facility and all our new colleagues who work there, will significantly contribute towards our ongoing success and our ability to be competitive in a market which continues to grow. With confidence, we continue to ‘MOVE with trust’.”
Despite having a global presence with regional and local support offices in the Americas, Asia, Middle East and across Europe, Hanwha Techwin is very much defined by its Korean heritage. As a global manufacturer of professional video surveillance solutions whose headquarters are in Korea, Hanwha Techwin is proud of the contribution it is making to its country’s reputation for designing, developing and producing quality, innovative products which make a real difference to people’s lives. Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., Managing Director of Hanwha Techwin Europe, believes the company’s Korean heritage and its core values of Challenge, Loyalty and Integrity, which are at the heart of its ‘WE MOVE with trust’ central marketing theme, have equipped the company to stand out from the crowd. In this interview, we asked Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., to provide an update on the steps the company is taking to ensure it continues to succeed in a highly competitive market, but first we asked Bob if the ‘WE MOVE with trust’ campaign has helped sales. Q 1: Is 2018 proving to be a good year for Hanwha Techwin? Bob: Yes, I am pleased to report we are enjoying what looks to be another record-breaking year. The quantity of products shipped each month has never been higher and it is possible our success will exceed that achieved in 2017 when we saw a 40% growth in the number of products sold. Q 2: Do you think the ‘WE MOVE with trust’ campaign has contributed to this success? Bob: There is no doubt that our efforts to build trust with all parties involved in the supply chain is understood and appreciated by our customers. We continue to ensure our products are designed to combat the activities of hackers and that customers’ confidential data is kept safe" Q 3: Can you give some examples of what this means in practical terms? Bob: We continue to ensure our products are designed to combat the activities of hackers and that customers’ confidential data is kept safe. This is just as important to the many thousands of small businesses that entrust our video surveillance solutions to protect their assets, people and property, as it is for our high security and mission critical end-user clients which include local authorities, government, military and emergency services. Cyber Security Cyber security has been at the top of our list of priorities for some time. We believe our cameras and recorders incorporate all reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access to images and data. We do not have a ‘back-door’ and we have introduced sensible password protocols. We consider it essential that a secure password is set up during the initial installation process, which is why we prohibit the consecutive use of the same letter or number and we encourage the use of special characters as well as a combination of letters and numbers. It is important not to be complacent and we are constantly monitoring and testing the latest methods of hacking using third party security agencies. When necessary, we release new firmware to counter the latest threats. Our 'WE MOVE with trust’ message also embraces our relationship with distribution and solution partners, our quality & service and extended 5-year Warranty support which we offer to our STEP partners as part of a package of benefits to reward their loyalty and give them a competitive edge. Wisenet Biometrics And A.I Tech Video Analytics A.I Tech’s video analytics technology was the winner of the Business Intelligence category in the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2018 In particular, we appreciate our customers do not measure products and solutions just by their features and this is why Hanwha Techwin believes in taking responsibility for the solutions developed with our technology partners. The good news is that our strategy of working in close partnership with specialist application developers in order to deliver new, innovative solutions which make good use of our high performance Wisenet open platform cameras, has been further justified by an award recently won by our technology partner, A.I.Tech. A.I Tech’s video analytics technology, which is utilized by our Wisenet Biometrics and Retail solutions, was selected as the winner of the Business Intelligence category in the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2018. The awards, which are run by Benchmark Magazine, the UK’s monthly publication which is widely regarded as the “Which” magazine for the electronic security industry, are designed to recognize and reward innovative thinking and the delivery of benefits through advanced security solutions. Q 4: Can we expect to see new technology partnership announcements in the near future? Q 5: Have you taken any action to help customers comply with GDPR? At Hanwha Techwin, we believe it is important for end-users and system integrators to work closely together to negate the risk of data misuse" Bob: At Hanwha Techwin, we believe it is important for end-users, system integrators and manufacturers to work closely together to negate the risk of data misuse. In this respect, we have placed maximum importance on providing privacy-friendly products which assist end-users to comply with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR Compliance And White Paper Although not wishing to be alarmist, a serious violation of GDPR could be subject to a fine of up to 4% of a company’s annual revenue or EUR 20 million, whichever is higher. In addition, non-compliance with GDPR violation could result in a class action or civil law suits against individuals. With this in mind, Hanwha Techwin has published a White Paper which sets out the impact on video surveillance systems of the new GDPR which came into force in May 2018. The White Paper addresses in detail the responsibilities of those who are in control of video surveillance systems. It also explains what steps Hanwha Techwin has taken to ensure the features and functions of its Wisenet cameras, recording devices and video management software (VMS), are able to assist operators in complying with GDPR. Alternatively, an Executive Summary is available which highlights the key aspects of the White Paper. Q 6: How would you summarize Hanwha Techwin’s aspirations for the future? Bob: We intend to drive forward our plans to further enhance the value of our Wisenet brand by capitalizing on the expertise of our talented design and development engineering teams and the ingenuity of our technology partners. We will be able to do this as a result of the encouragement we receive from our parent company in Korea who have supported our decision to continue to recruit sales and technical colleagues of the highest calibre to ensure our Wisenet brand is backed by unbeatable pre and post-sales support. Most importantly, we are determined to build on our reputation for operating with integrity and for striving to excel in everything we do.

Hanwha Techwin Europe has recruited Uri Guterman to take on the newly created role of Head of Product & Marketing. Uri will be working closely with Hanwha Techwin Europe’s Country Managers and other key stakeholders to drive the implementation of the company’s B2B channel program. He will also be responsible for developing strategies and driving programmes to help win additional new business across Europe. Merged Product And Marketing Departments “We are delighted to have been able to recruit someone of Uri’s calibre to this very important role,” said Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., Managing Director of Hanwha Techwin Europe. “With Justin Hollis, our previous Head of Marketing moving on to a new challenge, we have taken the opportunity to review our organization’s structure and in order to align our strategic goals, we have merged our Product and Marketing departments.” Uri brings to Hanwha Techwin a wealth of product management expertise accrued over 20 years at a European level and 10 years experience of the video surveillance industry. With a proven track record of being a high energy team player and with the ability to lead and simultaneously manage multiple projects, Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D. believes Uri could not be joining the company at a better time. “We will be able to put Uri’s talents to good use as we look to focus on future growth opportunities made possible by our investment in outstanding new products and technology partnership based solutions, which incorporate cutting edge technologies.” Focus On Future “We appreciate product and solution partnerships are not measured by features and functions alone. We believe in taking responsibility for solutions with partners who add value for customers, which is why Uri will have the responsibility of ensuring our ‘WE MOVE with trust’ message, which embraces our distribution and solution partners, cyber security, quality & service and our extended 5 year warranty, continues to be highlighted across Europe.”
The latest addition to the Wisenet P premium camera series manufactured by Hanwha Techwin has the capability of two video surveillance cameras in a single housing. The PNM-7000VD is able to capture Full HD 2MP images of adjacent areas with the help of two separate lenses. Depending on the required field of view, system integrators can also choose to fit 2.8, 3.6 or 6mm lenses. PNM-7000VD Multi-Directional Camera End-users are understandably looking for maximum value from their video surveillance system" “End-users are understandably looking for maximum value from their video surveillance system. Our new two channel multi-directional camera significantly reduces the costs which would normally be associated with installing two separate cameras, perhaps either side of a building or site, without any compromise on quality,” said Bob (H.Y.) Hwang Ph.D., Managing Director of Hanwha Techwin. “It is an excellent example of how ‘We MOVE with trust’ by introducing innovative solutions which offer real-life practical benefits.” The PNM-7000VD is equipped with the world’s best 150dB Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), Lens Distortion Correction and Digital Image Stabilisation technology to deliver optimized images in every situation. It also has a long list of other useful features including privacy masking and direction, face, fog, virtual line, appear/disappear, loitering and camera tampering detection. Two SD/SDHC/SDXC memory slots enable video to be automatically recorded in the event of network disruption. WiseStream II Technology The PNM-7000VD supports H.264 and MJPEG compression, but bandwidth efficiency is improved by up to 99% compared to current H.264 technology when H.265 is utilised with WiseStream II, a complementary compression technology which dynamically controls encoding, balancing quality and compression according to movement in the image.
One of the UK’s largest video surveillance projects in recent years involving the deployment of 845 Wisenet cameras manufactured by Hanwha Techwin, is nearing completion. The video surveillance system, which is designed to play an important role in helping ensure the safe and reliable delivery of public transport across the West Midlands, is being used to monitor activity at over 50 railway stations, 11 bus stations, 3 Midland Metro park and ride sites, as well as the main Number 11 bus route around the City of Birmingham. Live and recorded images from all cameras are being monitored at an advanced control room, located in central Birmingham Wisenet HD IP camera integration The project which is targeted for completion in July 2018 has so far seen approximately 845 Wisenet cameras installed by Total Integrated Solutions Ltd. (TIS) on behalf of Transport for West Midlands which was set up by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to co-ordinate investment needed to improve the region’s transport infrastructure. The remaining work includes the deployment of the latest generation of Wisenet high definition IP cameras at a number of car parks, together with significant camera upgrades in Walsall and Solihull, two of four Local Authority public space CCTV systems are already monitored by WMCA. Live and recorded images from all the cameras are being monitored at a £1.2M state-of-the-art control room located in central Birmingham. “Our approach to this very large, complex project was not simply one of agreeing to meet exacting KPI’s from a performance perspective,” said Eamonn Murphy, Coleshill based TIS’s key account manager. “We felt the route to success would be to adopt a more partnership type approach, where we were not only the provider of technical solutions but were also involved at a strategic level in identifying with Transport for West Midlands a pathway of system upgrade, improved efficiency, cost reduction, innovation and utilising latest technology such as video analytics to the best advantage.” TIS is assured seamless integration between Wisenet cameras and Veracity Coldstore ‘direct to storage’ solution Wisenet cameras & Veracity Coldstore solutions Transport for West Midlands evaluated cameras available from 9 different manufacturers. The subsequent decision to source all the cameras from Hanwha Techwin, (previously known as Samsung Techwin), was partly due to the price/performance ratio of its cameras, but there were two other important factors which were taken into consideration. Firstly, Hanwha Techwin has a close working relationship with its technology partner, Veracity. This meant TIS could be assured that there would be seamless integration between Wisenet cameras and the Veracity Coldstore ‘direct to storage’ solution. This negates the need for Network Video Recorders (NVRs) and thereby substantially reduces capital costs, as well as minimising setup and maintenance requirements. Open Platform cameras The Veracity Coldstore recording solution is unique in the linear way that data is written to the hard drives. Only 2 hard drives are spinning at any one time, meaning a significant reduction in power consumption, lower heat generation and greater longevity of the hard drives, reducing the overall cost of ownership. When drive failures do occur, the faulty drive can be swapped with a new drive allowing uninterrupted use. The second important factor was the capability of the Wisenet open platform cameras to accommodate a variety of edge-based analytics such as ANPR and heat mapping, should Transport for West Midlands wish to deploy these at some point in the future. Trials of the Wisenet People Counting application are currently being carried out. This utilises the analytics software developed by Facit Data Systems, another Hanwha Techwin technology partner. Wisenet SNP-6320H cameras are configured for the transmission of 25 images per second (ips) at 1080p resolution Intelligent Day/Night cameras A large percentage of the cameras installed are Wisenet SNP-6320H 2 Megapixel Full HD network PTZ dome cameras. In addition to being a true Day/Night camera which is able to capture high quality images in low light, the SNP-6320H’s powerful 32 x zoom capability enables operators to observe the close-up detail of any activity. Trials were conducted where the cameras were capped at 2 Mbps and configured for the transmission of 25 images per second (ips) at 1080p resolution. The performance at this low bandwidth level was impressive and further contributed to the selection of the Wisenet SNP-6320H, which are also equipped with intelligent auto-tracking capability to ensure a greater level of detail can be captured when no operator is present. Other Wisenet cameras deployed as part of the project include the SNV-6084R vandal-resistant IR dome and the SNB-6004 fixed camera, both of which are able to capture Full HD 2 Megapixel images. Video Surveillance Technology “Working on rail, Metro and bus station sites spread across the wider West Midlands area is a complex and challenging operation and the TIS team deserve recognition for its expertise and diligence,” said Mark Babington, Safety & Security Manager for Transport for West Midlands. Suppliers such as Hanwha Techwin and Veracity have also worked extremely well in partnership with us to ensure we could achieve maximum benefit from this substantial investment" “TIS’s engineers were qualified to the highest degree to support the latest video surveillance technology, as well as being experienced to cope with older legacy systems.
