CDS Integrated Security Systems have replaced five existing CCTV cameras and installed six new ones to provide expanded surveillance coverage in Slough High Street. Slough Borough Council took the opportunity to replace existing end-to-end fiber-optic links between each camera and the control room, with an extension to a single fiber ‘backbone', and in-conjunction with NVT Hybrid Video™ UTP Transmission Technology.

Each relocated camera now features a NVT Single Channel Video Transceiver located in the base of the camera pole. From there, images are transmitted via a 20-pair UTP backbone cable to a street-side communications cabinet containing multiple NVT Video Transceivers. The video signals are then transferred to the fiber ‘backbone' for transmission back to the control room.

The cost of leasing multiple individual fiber links between each camera and the control room was proving expensive year-on-year, so consolidating the system into their own, newly installed CCTV sub-surface duct network back to the fiber backbone, and NVT UTP to each of the new and relocated cameras has proved to be a great solution; in terms of both image quality and reduced overall costs. Peter Webster, Slough's CCTV Control Room Manager explains: "By utilising NVT's UTP Hybrid Video™ technology to connect each camera in the system, we are enjoying an economical solution that combines stunning camera images with highly competitive cost reduction benefits."

Connecting each camera via a 20-pair UTP backbone also meant a smoother and less cumbersome installation process versus that required by a traditional RG59/RG11 coax system, due to UTP's significantly reduced dimensions. This proved critical during the installation period, when the reduction of civil works on Slough's busy streets was a top priority.

Additionally, NVT Hybrid Video™ UTP products also feature Ground Loop Isolation and Interference Immunity as standard; delivering crystal-clear images in the control room, even among the challenging environment of a modern town centerthat

features telecom, mains power lines, street lighting, traffic control systems, and a raft of other airborne interference sources that would leave inferior systems struggling to provide consistent images.

By installing a 20-pair NVT Hybrid Video™ UTP network to the fiber link, CDS Integrated Security Systems have also supplied the council with a future-proof and easily expandable network, allowing any additional cameras needed to be simply added, using the multiple spare UTP pairs. This inherent expandability can also be harnessed to further relieve the financial constraints of the existing end-to-end leased fiber links, by converting more of the existing cameras to connect to the new
central fiber ‘backbone' via NVT UTP Hybrid Video™, a strategy under strong consideration for the future.

CDS Integrated Security Systems are using NVT UTP Hybrid Video™ transmission on existing and forthcoming projects, from town centers like Slough, to high-profile single sites/multi-camera projects such as the Welsh Assembly.
