Protecting assets and people has always been a top priority for Kirkland’s, a global home décor retailer. With over 400 stores in 37 states, Kirkland’s is a go-to spot for a broad selection of distinctive merchandise: art, mirrors, candles, lamps, frames, accent rugs, furniture and more. When they evaluated their security solutions in 2016, they determined they needed to upgrade the analog video surveillance systems in use at their existing locations and plan for new stores. Analog video surveillance cameras Management wanted a camera that provided a clear picture, while minimizing bandwidth usage Saraya Charlton, Kirkland’s Loss Prevention Investigator, said the analog video surveillance cameras they had in place were acceptable, but they desired cameras with wider coverage and better resolution. The department was also frustrated with the amount of time it took to investigate incidents for loss prevention and personal injury claims. Each time they were called to investigate an incident – vandalism, theft, employee misconduct, a slip and fall, or a cut from broken merchandise – each individual store had to extract the footage from the analog DVR at that location and send it to loss prevention at Kirkland’s headquarters. Charlton said Kirkland’s sought an IP-based solution that could be accessed remotely, that would make the loss prevention investigation process more efficient and would provide additional benefits. Management wanted a camera that provided a clear picture, while minimizing bandwidth usage and had analytics capability. IP video surveillance solution Working with several systems integrators, Kirkland’s chose to deploy an IP video surveillance solution consisting of Hanwha video surveillance cameras managed by Salient enterprise Video Management Software (VMS). The first phase of the security upgrade has included the deployment of 1,800 Hanwha Wisenet X series XNV-6011 2 megapixel HD dome cameras and Wisenet Lite vandal-resistant dome cameras at 200 Kirkland’s locations, as well as the distribution center and the e-commerce building. As new stores are built by this growing retailer, they will also include the Hanwha-Salient security solution. They expect to have a full migration to IP at all locations by 2021. Charlton said Hanwha’s cameras provide the most comprehensive view of the store possible. “The wide-angle capability – as well as the quality of the camera – is really what sold us on Hanwha,” said Charlton. “We are getting the best views possible and they are allowing us to see the entire sales floor which is exactly what we wanted and needed.” Hanwha’s Wisenet X series of cameras is a perfect fit for the retail environment. The wide-angle 2.8 mm lens captures a 112-degree horizontal field of view, for a retailer that means doing more with less. Pulling recorded video Charlton said the Hanwha cameras are particularly useful at store entrances because, thanks to the WDR feature, video images are not affected by the bright sunlight that often shines through the windows and they can still see faces clearly. And because many of Hanwha’s cameras offer license free analytics, Kirkland’s will begin exploring that capability in the future to gain information on people counting, heat mapping and dwell time. They also appreciate being able to use Hanwha’s Device Manager to troubleshoot The Hanwha-Salient solution has improved Kirkland’s loss prevention investigation efficiency since the team is able to pull recorded video from any camera via the Salient VMS rather than wait for information to be extracted from an analog DVR. They also appreciate being able to use Hanwha’s Device Manager to troubleshoot and resolve any camera issues remotely first rather than unnecessarily sending out a service technician. Video surveillance and security bandwidth In addition to offering quality images, improved field of view and more efficient operations, the Hanwha solution has also helped Kirkland’s conserve valuable bandwidth with Hanwha WiseStream II compression technology, said Charlton. WiseStream II dynamically controls encoding, balancing quality and compression according to movement of the image. Combined with H.265 compression, bandwidth efficiency can be improved by up to 75 percent compared to current H.264 technology. “We share our video surveillance and security bandwidth with our Point of Sale system and we don’t ever want to take away from the bandwidth of POS transactions or impact the speed at which they go through,” said Charlton. “Hanwha’s Wisestream compression technology fits our business model and along with Salient helps preserve and efficiently manage bandwidth. It’s really helpful to have a camera that’s smart enough to be able to tweak and regulate itself.”

Wisenet X series IR PTZ cameras have been installed along the building exteriors, providing periphery monitoring 24/7 and auto tracking that enables precise monitoring across long distances, while IR illumination provides visibility even at night. Inside the buildings, around 1,400 Hanwha Techwin’s Wisenet Q series cameras were installed on the terminal’s ceilings and walls. The cameras are able to help detect any problems occurring to the automated conveyor systems which have a constant flow of parcels on them. They also oversee the movement of over 1,500 vehicles in and around the terminal and help create a safe working environment. Highly accurate recognition Wisenet X series bullet cameras, running license plate recognition (ANPR) software onboard, have been installed at the main gate of the terminal to enhance security at the entrances and exits, providing highly accurate recognition of license plates. These cameras enable effective vehicle monitoring within the terminal where cargo moves in and out around the clock, and are particularly useful in monitoring the main entrance. Both camera types are equipped with 12x optical zoom and 150dB WDR Wisenet X series bullet and PTZ cameras have been installed at indoor staircases and corridors of the office building. Intelligent video analytics As part of the Wisenet X series, these cameras feature intelligent video analytics and offer movement, loitering and intrusion detection. They are also equipped with audio analysis functionality which recognizes critical sounds such as gunshots, explosions, screams and broken glass. “Thanks to the Hanwha Techwin’s Wisenet security solution, we were able to build a safe video surveillance system that can match the size and the cutting edge facilities of Asia’s largest logistics terminal,” said an official at CJ Logistics. “Now we can safeguard every corner of our terminal including vehicles, parcels, and personnel, not to mention indoor and outdoor spaces.”
Two of the most important priorities in a manufacturing environment are safety and productivity. Failure to follow safe work practices around machinery on a factory floor can result in serious injury, while poor productivity can erode profits and ultimately threaten the viability of the business. At WCCO Belting, a Wahpeton, North Dakota-based manufacturer of custom rubber products for agriculture and light-industrial conveyor equipment, a March Networks® video surveillance solution plays a key role in enhancing both safety and productivity. WCCO engineers use the video to monitor work processes and then tweak them to speed production, while ensuring optimum quality. Security System Integrator The company selected Marco Technologies as its security system integrator in 2015, and acquired March Networks 8000 Series Hybrid NVRs shortly thereafter. Two years later, when WCCO Belting decided to also equip a second production facility in Arlington, Texas, it upgraded to a March Networks Command™ Recording Software (CRS) solution in North Dakota and moved the 8000 Series Hybrid NVRs to its Texas facility. At the same time, the company deployed March Networks Command Enterprise Software to tie all the video from its geographically-dispersed facilities together, said Marsh. The software enables WCCO Belting “to oversee everything and manage the entire system from a single point of entry.” In addition, approximately 50 March Networks IP cameras — including indoor domes with wide dynamic range and outdoor IR bullet cameras — provide crystal-clear video of activity on the company’s factory floors, loading docks and parking lots. Remote Configuration Marsh cites ease of use and outstanding support as the main reasons for selecting the video solution. “The technology is easy to implement, easy to use and easy to navigate. Support has also been great. When we ran into some early issues, they responded quickly to help resolve the problem.” We didn’t have to uproot a lot of the architecture already in place" “More recently, when we decided to expand the system to include our second location, it was Marco that recommended the CRS solution and the redeployment of our NVRs to Texas. It was really plug and play. That was the winning piece for us. We didn’t have to uproot a lot of the architecture already in place.” A system that was easy to rollout was important because WCCO Belting’s IT department does the physical camera install themselves, while partnering with Marco Technologies for remote configuration. Command Mobile App “It’s one of the reasons we like March Networks, because we’re a hands-on IT department,” explained Marsh. “We like to make sure we’re always on top of things and that we understand the equipment we’re working with. If we can’t install it ourselves and need someone to come in and do it for us, it just creates future costs.” Aside from the IT department, which has administrative access to the system, authorized supervisors and managers at WCCO Belting are able to audit video for safety and security purposes. Temporary access is also provided to engineering staff for time studies. Marsh and several supervisors also have access to video through the Command Mobile app on their smartphones. Available as a free download from the Apple Store and Google Play, Command Mobile runs on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Track Offending Vehicle Remote, after-hours access to video proved valuable during the previously mentioned safety incident, for example, “by allowing managers to pull up video from home and use it to make decisions quickly,” said Marsh. The video solution has also proven useful to local law enforcement, as some of the bullet cameras covering the employee parking lot at the North Dakota facility also have a clear view of North 9th St., a busy artery in the town of 8,000. The video resolution was so good that we were able to quickly track the offending vehicle" “One day, I was called to the front desk and met by two police officers and three sheriffs,” recalled Marsh. “They wanted to come to my office but didn’t say why. I was never so nervous in my life. Once in my office, they explained that they wanted to see if we had any recorded video to help them solve a hit and run a block and a half down the road. We did, and the video resolution was so good that we were able to quickly track the offending vehicle.” Rubber Belting Solutions “We’ve had two law enforcement visits since then, so now when they show up, I know I’m not in trouble,” joked Marsh. A 300-key Traka system was installed on the main site and a 100-key system was installed at a neighbouring site Imperial War Museum (IWM) London has enlisted the help of Traka to implement an automated key management system. IWM exhibits various collections, covering conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth from the First World War to the present day. The London site is home to the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses, as well as other historically important items. As part of an ongoing refurbishment project, that is due to be completed in July, IWM decided to implement an automated key management system. Previously, the administration of 400 keys across two sites was managed manually, a time-intensive task that created inherent security risks. An automated process was needed to better protect the collections, and also to secure access to other parts of the museum. A 300-key Traka system was installed on the main site and a 100-key system was installed at a neighboring site. The solution ensures that only authorized staff are allowed access to the key cabinet, and within it they can only access designated keys. The system automatically records who has taken which key and when, meaning there is complete accountability of who is responsible for which key, 24 hours a day. Thanks to the partnership between Traka distributor, Secure Technology Solutions Ltd and security integrator, Pointer Ltd the system can be used in conjunction with Lenel OnGuard access control, so that staff can access keys through their existing security badges. This creates seamless integration with the existing security management, and allows the reporting and subsequent audit trail of who has accessed which key to be fed through to the central database and reports whether the keys have been returned. Tim Strofton from the Imperial War Museum said, “Before the Traka key management system was installed we were accounting for all the keys manually, which was a very time-intensive task. Changing to an automated system improved our operational efficiency significantly and gave us greater piece of mind.”
