Contactless and Biometric Solutions: 5 Minutes With Yves Portalier from IDEMIA

SourceSecurity.com (SSC): Tell us more about IDEMIA and its contribution to the security industry?

IDEMIA: IDEMIA was born in 2017 from the merger of two French technology leaders; Oberthur Technology and Morpho. Today we serve clients in more than 180 countries; we are a global leader in augmented identity and to do so, we protect what is most important, what is mission-critical today - your identity. We deliver today already, billions of ways to authenticate people when they want to pay, when they want to connect to a telecom network, when they want to act as a citizen to seek for health care services and also to access corporations in abuilding for example.

What we want to do is to build trust at a different level; it could be at a country level, at a regional level, within the corporation, and when you are using your smartphone to access digital services. And looking back to the corporate application, we are providing in that context biometric devices that are allowing people that are authorized to access into a secured area.

(SSC): How has the pandemic contributed to the need for enterprises to equip with contactless and biometric solutions?

IDEMIA: So the biggest benefit of biometrics is that only you, can be you. Today we have a large portfolio of biometric solutions that are used for different kinds of use cases. They are implementing the various biometric technologies that are face, iris or fingerprint. Regarding the products that we are serving to companies and corporations, we have a full range of contactless products that are already available. In fact, we started to invest in contactless years ago; our intent, our strategy here was to serve the companies when they want to allow people to enter into buildings in a very secure manner and on a very convenient and fast manner.

In fact, the big benefit of contactless (and we go beyond contactless) is by building what we call frictionless. It means that we are allowing people to go quickly in a very simple manner into companies, and this can be illustrated quite quickly and simply with one of the products we have, which is MorphoWave. With MorphoWave, you just wave your hands on top of the product; in a second or so you are recognized using all the information on the 3D image of your finger, and you can access into the building.

It means that approximately 50 people can enter per minute into a building, using this equipment, and of course, this is extremely fast and extremely secure.

(SSC): How would you say these technologies are adapting to the new needs of the pandemic?

So we have continued to work on what it means for our product roadmap, and what does it mean for us to support customers when they want to allow people to come back to the office in a very safe manner. We have launched recently a new product which is called Vision Pass, which is combining a 2D face and a 3D face; the purpose here is to provide a solution that is frictionless, not only contactless but frictionless. So this facial recognition product you can go up to it, you walk, you slow down a bit, you look at the product and the gate is open in less than two seconds. Your face is recognized and the gate is open to allow you to enter. We are here again, bringing another level of frictionless recognition through face recognition as a technology. Looking at the impact of the pandemic, we have implemented ways to detect if somebody is wearing a mask or not, because in some companies, wearing a mask is mandatory to enter the company.

We have already delivered improved algorithms that are recognizing people through the higher part of their face, as the rest is hidden by a mask, and we are also continuing supporting companies especially when they have contact-based products (I would say traditional products) by providing solutions that are allowing to clean the products when they have been used. As you see, our teams are really mobilized to deliver the best biometric technologies but beyond that, solutions that are adapted to the needs of access control and time maintenance.
