Quantum Corporation has announced new software with advanced features and capabilities for DXi backup appliances to significantly improve backup and restore system performance, as well as monitor systems remotely utilizing cloud-based analytics. The new DXi 4.1 software also integrates with Veeam Backup & Replication v10 and the new Fast Clone feature, to enable ultra-fast synthetic full backups in Veeam environments for more efficient use of resources for large enterprises. Improved synthetic full backup performance The combination of Quantum DXi software and Veeam Fast Clone can cut the time to create a synthetic full backup Employing an incremental backup strategy is increasingly common. However, creating synthetic full backups on a backup appliance can be taxing on the system performance and on the network. To address this issue Quantum DXi 4.1 software leverages Veeam Backup & Replication v10 Fast Clone technology to accelerate synthetic full backup performance. Fast Clone references existing data blocks on volumes instead of copying data blocks between files, copying those blocks only when files are modified. The result is faster creation of synthetic full backups, reduced disk space requirements, and a reduced load on storage devices. Based on results from Quantum testing and early customer deployments, the combination of Quantum DXi software and Veeam Fast Clone can cut the time to create a synthetic full backup for a large VM from hours to just minutes. Remotely monitor DXi system health Quantum DXi systems can now connect to Quantum’s Cloud-Based Analytics (CBA) software, a cloud-based services tool that enables end-to-end integrated communication between Quantum systems and Quantum product and service experts. CBA software allows administrators to monitor system health remotely via a secure cloud-based portal. When Quantum CBA agents are enabled on DXi backup systems, those systems send telemetry and log data to the Quantum CBA software, providing administrators with a central portal they can use to monitor and track system and environment health and statistics, providing a proactive view into backup environments. Other DXi software enhancements DXi 4.1 software includes other new software enhancements: Support for Veritas NetBackup Targeted Automatic Image Replication (AIR) with a new OST Targeted AIR Plug-In Improved replication fan-in capabilities – up to 50:1 fan in for DXi9000 systems, and up to 30:1 fan-in for DXi4800 systems DXi Accent path optimization to reduce network loads More flexible system memory configurations Support for additional virtual tape drives (VTDs) for VTL DXi4800 Availability DXi 4.1 software is available in the market as a no-charge upgrade for any DXi4800 and DXi9000 backup appliance DXi 4.1 software is available in the market as a no-charge upgrade for any DXi4800 and DXi9000 backup appliance. Phil Goodwin, Research Director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group, IDC said, “Traditional backup and recovery software remains strong, even as organizations add cloud-based backup to their data protection strategies. The combination of a Quantum DXi appliance and Veeam V10 shows great potential for enterprises seeking to protect their vital hybrid-cloud environments. Faster synthetic full backups enabled by this release means that organizations can backup more often, thereby reducing the risk of data loss and delivering a better RPO.” Protecting vital Enterprise data David Harvey, Vice President of Strategic Alliances, Veeam said, “Quantum DXi continues to develop as a valued tool for protecting vital Enterprise data. The combination of Veeam Backup & Replication v10 and Quantum DXi 4.1 software really moves data protection a step forward with a simple, flexible, and reliable solution for hybrid-cloud environments.” Bruno Hald, General Manager, Secondary Storage, Quantum Corporation said, “Backup efficiency continues to be a vital priority for Enterprises seeking to make the most of their datacenter resources while protecting increasingly distributed environments. These significant new software feature enhancements optimize performance with bandwidth and interface improvements, enabling DXi appliances to integrate much more tightly with backup applications.”
Quantum Corp. has announced a reorganization of its engineering division, establishing two general manager positions with P&L responsibility to lead the company’s primary and secondary storage product lines, and adding a key executive role. The positions will enable Quantum to expand its leadership in storing video and other unstructured data, as well as build on its strengths in archive and data protection. Strategic expansion The reorganisation supports Quantum’s goals to grow both organically and via strategic acquisitions The reorganization supports Quantum’s goals to grow both organically and via strategic acquisitions, and to extend its business model with recurring revenue streams as organizations shift to options such as storage-as-a-service. Vice President and General Manager, Primary Storage team at Quantam Corp. – Ed Fiore - Ed Fiore previously served as co-founder and CEO of Atavium, a private data storage software company focused on bringing business intelligence to storage. Atavium’s metadata-rich file system combines real-time search and analytics with a data orchestration engine to provide workflow automation, hybrid multi-cloud collaboration, and policy-based data placement. Hybrid multi-cloud and data solutions As GM of Primary Storage, Fiore will continue to develop source code and intellectual property that Quantum acquired from Atavium, advancing StorNext developments to address customer needs for media library software, real-time search and analytics, a hybrid multi-cloud experience, and ease of use. Prior to Atavium, Fiore served as vice president of Storage Engineering for Dell where he was responsible for the Compellent, EqualLogic, and FluidFS engineering teams. Also joining Quantum as a Technical Director on the Primary Storage team is Mark Bakke, an industry veteran who was one of the co-founders of Atavium. Bakke is widely respected for his contributions to next-generation, high-speed storage networking innovation - including the market’s first virtual switch and first iSCSI products - and will drive efforts developing enterprise-wide networking capabilities that are essential for emerging cloud solutions. Data protection and security Vice President and General Manager, Secondary Storage team at Quantam Corp. – Bruno Hald - Bruno Hald is a seasoned engineering leader who has been with Quantum for over 25 years and currently leads the engineering teams for the archive and data protection product portfolio. Throughout his career, Hald has helped develop and launch many successful storage platforms that generated significant revenues for Quantum. In this new role he will leverage his extensive experience with hyper-scale customers, large enterprises and big OEM accounts to help customers address their needs in the secondary storage space. Storage-as-a-service offerings With the new corporate structure in place, Quantum can better help our customers seeking agile partners" “With our new corporate structure in place, Quantum is better able to help our customers who are seeking agile partners and more flexible solutions such as storage-as-a-service offerings that can enable them to weather today’s rapidly-shifting business climate,” said Jamie Lerner, President and CEO of Quantum Corp. Jamie adds, “It’s noteworthy that with the work we’ve done to rationalize our cost structure, we’re able to elevate our talent while decreasing operational expenses. Ed Fiore and Mark Bakke provide the startup caliber talent that is essential to our primary storage portfolio as we transition to delivering more software-defined solutions. I’m also thrilled to promote Bruno Hald to a new role that will enable us to focus on the unique requirements of archive and data protection customers who depend on Quantum.” Industrial IoT and enterprise solutions expert Quantum technology and services help customers capture, create and share digital content, while preserve and protect it for decades.
