False alarm reduction Designed specifically for correctional facilities and mental health settings with an anti-ligature casing, the camera is one of the latest in Hanwha Vision’s expansion of AI cameras. At the same time, we are reaching out to the political landscape to discuss how we balance regulation without hindering innovation. Video technology used ethically We are a global company with worldwide operations, and we are having dialogues about how video technology is being used and how we can have meaningful talks about what regulation and legislation should look like. However, we don’t necessarily want to limit access to the technology itself. Facial recognition We encourage the policymakers to engage with us in the industry so that together we can strike the fine line Facial recognition is a great example of this. The EU is considering making live facial recognition illegal. That would be a huge inhibitor of proactive terrorism prevention. For example, if a well-known terrorist is walking down the street and is being mapped out against Interpol’s most wanted list, the authorities should be able to react. However, if a person walking down the street but is not mapped out or does not have any priors then the city should not be allowed to store the data of that individual’s whereabouts at that point in time. This potential legislation is concerning to me as a citizen of Europe. Instead, we encourage the policymakers to engage with us in the industry so that together we can strike the fine line for the better good of all of us. Maintaining high ethical standards We have a firm understanding and expectation that ethical standards are a huge driver in the security business. Citizens are not in favor of technology companies abusing data about them and monetizing from things that they have not opted in to do. Soon, I think we will see many more companies and governments leaning toward suppliers that do have a responsible mindset and high ethical standards for partnerships. Ethical practices Our journey toward Responsible Technology is an ongoing process, and we must remain steadfast in our commitment to ethical practices and the protection of human rights. We recognize that the rapidly changing technological landscape continually presents new challenges and opportunities. For this reason, we continuously look into how we can improve, for example, our end-user license agreements to avoid potential human rights abuses. The security industry is going increasingly digital these days, with more small- and medium-sized businesses joining their global brethren by moving their data to the cloud, leveraging the benefits of artificial intelligence, and embracing more open solutions. Innovation is expected to continue at a rapid pace, thanks in part to the residual effects of the pandemic which has driven changes that might have otherwise taken five years or a decade or more to get into customers’ hands on a global scale. Let’s take a look at the trends that will dominate ISC West 2023. Improved analytics Analytics is about expedience, and in the surveillance world, it makes it possible to identify and search for the “who did it?” clip you need. For analytics, along with the cloud, it comes back to the core themes of being able to do more with technology Analytics also provides more actionable intelligence than a simple surveillance camera may provide, from identifying high-traffic areas during select times of the day and alerting staff to pay greater attention to these areas, to business intelligence that can enable a company to staff a store with more employees. Interoperability vs. proprietary Related to the debate of open vs. closed solutions is how much the surveillance market prefers a turnkey solution compared to a more custom best-of-breed and tailored solution. Smaller and mid-market companies will be more interested in the turnkey solutions provided by a single vendor, while enterprise-level companies traditionally gravitate toward investing in customized solutions that are more likely to address their unique security challenges. One other related trend to keep an eye on is the role of the integrator as part of the rise of cloud and Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS) offerings.

As much as we seek to apply the powers of technology to security, there is also a criminal element that stands ready to use them with evil intent. Such is the case with drones. We have previously mentioned the possibilities of using drones for security applications. Now comes news that the criminal element has already been applying the technology of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to smuggle contraband into prisons. A drone crashed outside a prison in Bishopville, S.C. recently after failing to carry contraband over the 12-foot razor wire fence surrounding Lee Correctional Institution. The drone was being used to smuggle marijuana, tobacco and cell phones, all contraband inside the prison system. A cell phone sells for about $2,500 inside a prison, for example, and prison officials say cell phones are a security risk. Case in point: A cell phone was used to order a “hit” on a prison official in South Carolina in 2010. Capt. Robert Johnson, who was shot six times, survived the attack and has since retired. Drones were used in a similar smuggling scheme at a state prison in Calhoun, Ga., in my home state. Four people were arrested and charged with using remote-control helicopters to carry contraband over prison walls. As drones become more sophisticated, and if they were to become widely available as commercial products, such security risks would escalate, presenting new challenges of perimeter security at prisons. Such threats could also extend to other possible targets such as utility and chemical plants, critical infrastructure facilities, transportation hubs, etc.  Historically, security devices and sensors for perimeter applications have tended to be ground-based and/or mounted on fences and walls. The need to protect the airspace around a prison or chemical plant is a fairly new consideration. Systems to deal with such threats could include technologies like radar and thermal cameras. Addressing false alarms would also be a priority. Sensors would need to be tied to a dependable alarm system to alert overworked guards and/or security personnel only in the event of an actual threat. Wonder what technologies could prevent an “air attack” by drones?

One of the UK’s major jails is enhancing surveillance with the help of video wall experts Ultimate Visual Solutions (UVS), who specialize in control room installations at prisons and other high-security establishments. Courts have been shifting to virtual court proceedings using video teleconferencing for a variety of reasons including cost and safety. The COVID pandemic forced more courts to adapt. The Ningbo City Bus mobile surveillance project, one of the largest transportation installations in China, covers more than 3,600 buses belonging to 14 transportation companies in Ningbo city. Challenge  The Ningbo Transportation Department faced many of the common problems with security on their buses. They needed to protect their assets and provide for the safety and security of passengers and drivers. Their security system needed to provide evidence in the event of theft or injury, help to settle disputes between passengers and staff. The surveillance system had to support high-quality video playback and store video data going back 2 weeks. Anti-shock technology would be adopted as well to ensure the normal function of the mobile surveillance system when the bus is in motion. Mobile solution with color dome cameras  Hikvision created a high-quality mobile solution that consisted of the DS-8004HMF-B mobile DVR, the DS-1002HM-S mobile DVR backup device, and the DS-2CC512P color dome camera to meet these requirements. In addition, if there are complaints about drivers from the passengers or disputes between passengers, the related video footage can be retrieved and viewed for reference. Video backup device  To realize high-capability local storage, the Ningbo transportation department chose hard disk drives with the capability of up to 750GB each, which can store video data for at least 15 days. The Hikvision DS-1002HMI-S mobile DVR backup device was also used in this project for video data backup. With an e-SATA interface, the DS-1002HMI-S can be connected to the mobile DVR for high-speed video data backup in any specified time frame. Rich interfaces for system expanding Though this project didn't utilize real-time monitoring, the transportation department knows it may decide to upgrade that system at a future time. For this reason, the reserved network interfaces in the system will allow for wireless network video transmission to deliver real-time video/audio and alerting signals to the monitoring centers if required. As well, other interfaces are also set up on mobile DVRs for people counting, GPS positioning, and more for easy expansion. Video monitoring solution The video monitoring system improved the security level and decreased the rate of crime or illegal action" "To date, this project has covered most of the public bus routes in Ningbo City," said Jin. "After evaluation of the products' utility, stability and reliability by actual use, Hikvision's products have proven to be superior to the surveillance products that have been used in the buses of other cities in China." The general manager of Ningbo city public transportation head office, Dezhi Zhu said, "The video monitoring system created by Hikvision has obviously improved the security level of Ningbo bus transportation routes and dramatically decreased the rate of crime or illegal action on our buses."
