The concept of how security systems can contribute to the broader business goals of a company is not new. It seems we have been talking about benefits of security systems beyond “just” security for more than a decade. Given the expanding role of technologies in the market, including video and access control, at what point is the term “security” too restrictive to accurately describe what our industry does? We asked the Expert Panel Roundtable for their responses to this premise: Is the description “security technology” too narrow given the broader application possibilities of today’s systems? Why?
Terrorism is in the headlines all over the world. After any such incident, many of us in the physical security market find ourselves asking: What could we have done to prevent it? Assessing risk and preventing catastrophes before the fact are part of our market’s DNA; and yet, too often the random nature of terrorist attacks and their targeting of public places leave us unsure of anything anyone could have done. How can we translate the benefits of our industry’s products into real-world solutions that can prevent terrorist attacks? We presented the question to this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable, and received a variety of interesting responses. Specifically, we asked: How is the recent rise in terrorism impacting the physical security market (e.g., higher demand, different mix of products, etc.)? How should the physical security market respond? What solutions are needed?
Historically, biometrics applications have often been thought of as specialized, high-tech and used predominantly in governmental markets. Everyday systems have tended toward card readers and keypads, while biometrics have been associated with high-security applications. Today, however, biometrics are much more mainstream. Fingerprint readers, in particular, are as near as our smart phones. Many other biometric applications are also becoming more common in a wide variety of markets. We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: What non-governmental markets are likely to embrace biometrics? Which technologies will be most popular?

Time and attendance has proven to be a successful use of biometric technology traditionally used for controlling access to highly sensitive areas Security technology is increasingly being used to help organizations tackle challenges going far beyond controlling access to office buildings and monitoring parking lot activity. Video, in particular, has become the darling of many markets. Retailers use live and recorded video to assess promotional sales efforts. Manufacturers confirm employees are following mandated safety regulations. Transit officials debunk false liability claims with a review of recorded mobile video. But here’s a relatively new one – biometrics. Long thought perfect for controlling access to highly sensitive public and private research and military facilities, they are showing up in offices, hotels — even in remote fruit fields and sugar processing plants — for employee time and attendance. It’s proven to be a successful use of the broad technology. Risks Of Mechanical And Electronic Clocks The process of keeping track of employees’ hours has long been open to fraud and other issues. Mechanical time clocks — in use since the 1800s — and even more modern electronic clocks using magnetic stripe or proximity cards are open to a process known as ‘buddy punching.’ That’s a scheme in which an employee clocks in and/or out for a friend who may be late or not even at work. Mechanical systems are also slow, potentially leading to long queues during shift changes resulting in wasted time and lost productivity. Mechanical cards also need to be keystroked into the payroll system, requiring significant back office time for data entry. Electronic cards can be shared. They may also be lost or stolen, costing additional time and money in back office expense. Even small errors in collecting and processing employee time and attendance can add substantially to the cost of payroll, already a major expense for any organization. Studies by a leading international human resources consulting firm have shown even small payroll errors and fraud can boost operating costs by up to 10 percent. Biometric Time And Attendance Solution But fraud, delays and lost credentials can be largely eliminated by a biometric solution. Common biometric systems involve hand or fingerprint readers, facial identification or iris recognition. Each technology records and then compares physical characteristics unique to every individual. However, changes in weight, hairstyle, finger or hand size, cuts or even the effects of manual labor can trigger the need for re-enrollment – in all except iris-based solutions. Fraud, delays and lost credentials can be largely eliminated by a biometric solution Iris Recognition Advantages The structural formation of the human iris (the visible coloured ring around the pupil), is fixed from the first year of life and remains constant. And few people can’t use the technology, as most individuals have at least one eye. Even blind people have successfully used iris recognition. At employee enrollment, iris systems utilize an industry-standard camera to capture an image of the iris. Software converts that to a small template stored in a terminal database. Authentication requires employees to stand roughly 18 inches from an iris reader and the process takes about two seconds. With multiple readers installed, long lines are eliminated. Also eliminated is fraud. Since every user’s iris is unique and required to be present at the reader, time fraud schemes are virtually impossible. The system can also prevent another type of back-office time fraud known as “ghost employees” – non-existent people added to the payroll. Security is also enhanced. The digital templates can’t be used to produce any sort of visual image, affording a high-level of defense against employee identity theft. An iris recognition system can also grant facility access as employee’s clock in for work. Iris Recognition Case Study Here’s an example of how an iris recognition system has benefitted a major Turkish fruit and vegetable grower and one of Europe’s largest providers of juice. The nature of the local work force created a major time-and-attendance challenge. "Fingerprint and facial recognition systems were tried briefly. Facial recognition suffered from workers’ changes in hairstyle, facial hair, glasses and protective gear" New labourers arrive daily seeking work. Once hired, they might work a few days and then leave before returning a week later. Unreliable schedules made standard time cards virtually impossible to manage. The company’s security integrator suggested smart cards as an option. But that wasn’t much of an improvement as authorizing, printing, distributing and tracking cards for thousands of on-and-off workers continued the human resources nightmare. Also, improper use of the cards threatened to cut into the company’s profits. Both fingerprint and facial recognition systems were tried briefly. The constant cuts and scars workers get from the manual labor impaired the accuracy of readers. Facial recognition suffered from workers’ changes in hairstyle, facial hair, glasses and protective gear. Daily payroll reports are transmitted to the company’s Istanbul headquarters using wide area networks in the fields and satellite communication. Software links the received data to a payroll module which automatically calculates employee hours and produces paychecks. The system currently has more than 10,000 enrolled workers. More are being added on an almost daily basis. Once a worker is in the system, it doesn’t matter how often he may leave. When he returns, the iris system immediately recognizes him. Also, the contactless iris-based technology inhibits the transfer of virus or bacteria as there is no direct employee contact with the biometric readers. If these systems can work in remote areas of Turkey, they can certainly work in downtown Boston. And they do. There, a boutique hotel uses iris-based identity authentication to keep the hours of its employees. The same system also allows VIP guests to enter their suites without a key card. Reductions In Cost Recent reductions in both product and deployment costs have made using biometrics, including iris recognition, a practical time and attendance investment for organizations of almost any size and in any location. Of course, biometrics still remains the go-to choice for protecting sensitive locations and international borders, as well as national identity and voter registration programmes.
Asian Banker magazine recently selected Qatar National Bank for having the “Best Biometrics Initiative, Application or Program in Qatar” for its use of iris recognition systems from Iris ID in some QNB branch ATMs. The bank is the one of the largest financial institution in the Middle East and Africa, with branches, subsidiaries and associate companies in 31 countries on three continents. Biometric Eyes (IRIS) Scan ATM program The deployment of QNB’s Biometric Eyes (IRIS) Scan ATM program, a first-of-its-type in Qatar, is part of the bank’s commitment to innovative solutions to deliver premium services to customers in a safe, fast and convenient way. To use the Iris ID solution the bank’s customers, participate in a one-time registration at a QNB branch office. The two-minute process involves taking a digital photo of the iris, which is converted into a small template stored in a secure database. At the ATM, customers need only a second to look into a built-in reader and have their iris pattern confirmed. In addition to the QNB deployment, Iris ID authentication systems are currently used worldwide for access control, time and attendance, national ID programs, border crossings, voter registration and many other applications.

The recently mandatory BIS certification attests to the safety, quality and reliability of electronic, medical, construction and other many other commercial and consumer products. Registrations, known as Aadhaar numbers, are used for Indians to apply for a passport, obtain a driver’s license, receive social services and many other daily activities. Bluffton Self Help, a non-profit organization providing food, clothing and financial assistance to low-income residents of Bluffton, S.C., has gone high tech with an Iris ID iris recognition system tracking the hours of paid staff and volunteers. An Iris ID iCAM R100 camera replaces mag stripe cards, said Tony O’Brien, president of Sourcecode LLC, a South Carolina-based software development firm. He designed the iris system, as well as a computer network and telephone system for Bluffton Self Help. Saving The Cost Of Purchasing ID Cards “When I started working with the group it was still using sign-in sheets for its patrons to receive benefits,” he said. “I helped move them to a swipe card system about seven years ago. Then last summer I suggested to the executive director we could use iris identification to eliminate the cards.” The iris-based system saved Bluffton Self Help from purchasing and printing new and replacement ID cardsAccording to O’Brien, the iris-based system saved Bluffton Self Help from purchasing and printing new and replacement ID cards for the five paid staff members and more than 250 volunteers who regularly use the system. The Iris ID system paid for itself in about five months, O’Brien said. After staff inputs a new volunteer’s data, it takes seconds to enroll the person in the system. The person stands in front of a camera which takes a picture of both eyes (irises). Software turns the photo into a digital template stored on the organization’s computers network. The same camera is later used to identify volunteers arrive and leave in a process that takes less than two seconds. Monitoring Volunteers’ Working Hours Kimberly Hall, executive director, Bluffton Self Help, said the volunteers, many of them senior citizens, tell her the system is easy and fun to use. “Our volunteers love it,” she said. “And with the touch of a button on our computer we can see how many hours our volunteers have worked.” With the touch of a button on our computer we can see how many hours our volunteers have worked"Hall estimated volunteers annually provide about $1.2 million worth of services. That’s important to know when the privately funded group seeks contributions from donors who often want to make sure the organization has the manpower to ensure those in need are receiving services. Hall said patrons still use the swipe card system as many are undocumented residents and fearful of new technologies. She hopes education will change that as Iris ID’s stored digital templates cannot be reconstructed to identify a person. Boon Edam Inc., a manufacturer of security entrances and architectural revolving doors, has announced that Georgia Southern University’s state-of-the-art Recreation Activity Center (RAC) has deployed an integrated pedestrian access solution so only members can access the facility. A Boon Edam Trilock 60 tripod turnstile is integrated with Iris ID IrisAccess solution to enable swift user verification and access with a minimum of effort for students, faculty and staff. Center Of Campus Life The RAC at Georgia Southern serves as the center of campus life, welcoming over 5,000 students each day. Originally opened in 1998 with 80,000 square feet, the facility was expanded in 2006 to its present size of 215,000 square feet. The expansion achieved LEED certification, the first building to do so at Georgia Southern, which reflected the university’s culture of sustainability. Iris Recognition-Based Access Control The newly renovated RAC deployed Boon Edam waist-high turnstiles and gates as a means to control access for the increased number of visitors each day under staff supervision. But in 2014, when the Iris ID IrisAccess solution was paired with tripod turnstiles at two dining centers on campus, the RAC facility managers decided to investigate integrating an eye scanner with their current access control software. “With each passing year, the size of the database would grow, leading to an increase in the time it would take to verify each member. The process slowed, taking five to 12 seconds to grant access, causing unwanted delays for our users,” said Jason Schmidt, facility coordinator at the RAC. “When students used the iris scanners in the dining halls, it took no more than 2 seconds to process their entry. Boon Edam Trilock Side Gates are used on the other side of the main desk for dedicated egress. “The arrangement of a turnstile paired with the iris scanner technology is extremely fast and we’re encouraging our members to use it,” said Schmidt. “Once they purchase a membership and are entered into our database, the system grants them access to the facility and it is pretty seamless.” The RAC is planning to renovate in the near future to have a total of 4 turnstiles integrated with the Iris ID IrisAccess solution. The recently completed presidential election in Somaliland was the world’s first to use iris recognition to create a voter registration list and remove duplicate names from the rolls. The iris-based biometric technology, from Iris ID, helped ensure a free and fair election, so important for the autonomous state to gain the international recognition it seeks. A 60-member team of international observers, representing 27 countries, certified the November election as free and fair – a change from previous elections in which duplicate registrations led to questions about the legitimacy of the results. Somaliland, located on the Horn of Africa, declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. “In a world-first, these elections employed pioneering iris-recognition technology to register and identify voters, which is a testament to Somaliland’s commitment to its resources in democratic institutions and the rule of law,” said the new president, Muse Bihi Abdi, in a column for the Financial Times. NEC Uses Biometric Technology Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission reported an 80 percent turnout for the election. The NEC spent several years preparing for the vote, including the process of choosing a biometric technology to register citizens. Commission members wanted a system capable of noting those registering more than once. Both fingerprint facial recognition systems failed to recognize many duplicate registrations in the program’s early stages. At the recommendation of international election consultants, the commission tried an iris-based system. In a trial project, the Iris ID technology was able to accurately recognize all 457 instances of duplicates seeded into a base of 1,062 registrations. Experts estimate as many as 30,000 duplicates were identified during the countrywide registration. De-duplication was possible using Iris ID software which compared the high-quality biometric data from the iris scans. Enrollment Speed Works In Iris ID’s Favor Enrollment speed also worked in Iris ID’s favor. Roy Dalle Vedove, a prominent international elections specialist and NEC consultant, said the iris-based system was not only more accurate than fingerprint technology, but also cut the time needed to register a voter in half. “The fingerprint technology slowed the process, resulting in long lines of people wanting to resister,” he said. “As a result, registration officials were inclined to circumvent controls to speed the process.” After selecting the Iris ID technology, the NEC and purchased 350 portable registration kits consisting of a laptop computer, handheld iris scanner, webcam for facial photos, a flash and tripod. Registration stations were set up across the country – many in remote rural areas. Once approved, citizens received a temporary certificate until their national voter card was processed. Biometric technology from Iris ID is helping passengers at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport to pass through self-service security e-gates in as little as 10 seconds. More than 865,000 passengers used the gates in 2017’s first quarter. Two-Step Process The two-step process is available to all Qatar residents free of charge. Passengers place their ID cards or passports on a reader which opens a gate to a second portal. Iris scans or fingerprint readers are used to authenticate identify before opening the last barrier before the boarding gates. The process is repeated for passengers returning from trips outside Qatar. Maintaining Audit Trail “The high value we place on the security of our people, our work and our facilities demands tight security.” Ninin said. “The Iris ID system has been up to the task at 100 meters below ground.” He said extra precautions are designed to prevent “piggybacking,” a process in which one or more people enter along with an approved person. CERN staff members enter an airlock to access restricted areas. Inside, infrared beams note movements inconsistent with a single person. A floor pad sounds an alarm if it detects abnormal weight variations. Also, the compartment is small, making it difficult to fit a second person. The Iris ID reader takes less than one second to identify a person. If there is a match with a registered iris, a second door opens into the restricted area. Employees are only allowed access to those areas required for them to complete their work. The Iris ID system maintains an audit trail allowing CERN administrators to check who has entered certain areas and when. Ninin said about 20 more Iris ID readers will be installed at another CERN accelerator currently being refurbished and due to open again in 2019.
