Gunnebo Safe Storage has taken a significant step in its sustainability journey by joining SteelZero, a global initiative under Climate Group that unites organizations aiming for a net-zero steel industry. SteelZero members are committed to ensuring that half of their steel is low-emission by 2030 and achieving complete net-zero steel usage by 2050. This collaboration marks an integral part of Gunnebo Safe Storage's strategy to minimize its environmental impact.
Importance of Steel in Gunnebo Products
Steel forms a substantial component of Gunnebo Safe Storage's offerings, such as safes, vaults, and strongrooms, accounting for approximately 40% of the company's total carbon emissions. Myriam Bevillon, Head of Research and Development, Quality, and Sustainability at Gunnebo Safe Storage, emphasized the dual role of steel in their products: "Steel underpins the security and resilience of our products, but it also carries a high environmental cost. By joining SteelZero we can take practical steps to reduce this impact."
The partnership is viewed as a means to access vital expertise and work collaboratively towards reducing carbon impact in both company operations and the broader industry.
Focus on Low-Emission Steel Transition
Gunnebo Safe Storage identifies reinforced steel as a critical factor in its carbon footprint
In pursuit of its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, Gunnebo Safe Storage identifies reinforced steel as a critical factor in its carbon footprint. Transitioning to low-emission and near-zero emission steel is essential for this objective.
The company now joins over 40 other SteelZero members, collectively representing a demand for more than 10 million tons of steel annually. These members are collectively fostering the necessary conditions for transformative change in the steel sector, promoting innovations and scalable technologies to lower the carbon footprint.
Supporting Steel Decarbonization
Sameen Khan, Senior Manager at SteelZero, Climate Group, commented on Gunnebo Safe Storage's role in reducing industrial emissions, highlighting how their leadership could serve as an example across sectors. "Steel is one of the largest sources of industrial emissions, and Gunnebo Safe Storage is proving that leadership in steel decarbonization can come from any sector," Khan noted. The company’s focus on working with its supply chain and implementing low-emission steel showcases the importance of collaboration and best practices in advancing the industry's net-zero transition.
