OneWeb, a satellite communications company operating in low Earth orbit (LEO), has introduced its latest innovation, a compact user terminal, aimed at delivering high-speed internet access to businesses, governments, and communities worldwide, including remote areas. This new device, created in collaboration with Intellian Technologies, Inc. and Collins Aerospace, is the Compact-Electronically Steered Antenna OW1 user terminal, reflecting OneWeb’s commitment to providing reliable and affordable connectivity in under-connected regions and various industrial sectors.
OneWeb's Satellite Broadband Solution
The OW1 terminal is designed to deliver optimal performance, flexibility, and a slim profile, making it a suitable choice for OneWeb-powered satellite broadband deployment across diverse environments. The unit’s core is a flat-panel antenna, which can be installed with basic mounting and wiring skills. Measuring 50x43x10 cm and weighing approximately 10 kg, the device is compact—about the size of a briefcase.
Advancing Global Connectivity
Michele Franci, Chief of Delivery at OneWeb, emphasizes the terminal's significance: “We are so excited to bring this user terminal to market, and we thank Intellian and Collins for their invaluable partnership in making it a reality. OneWeb’s vision of connecting the world requires the hardware to do it, and we are pleased to be able to offer an affordable, compact and easy-to-install user terminal." This innovation will support applications like community Wi-Fi in secluded regions, rural retail systems, agricultural IoT functions, and internet access in remote hotels, health clinics, and research stations, areas that have traditionally lacked connectivity.
Seamless Integration and Deployment
The antenna is designed to integrate with a OneWeb satellite modem housed in a weather-sealed outdoor unit. Installation is facilitated by an optional stabilized J-mount, and connectivity is achieved through a single combined power and data cable linking to an indoor unit that extends internet access to end-user devices like laptops and routers. This introduction follows the successful completion of OneWeb’s 'Five to 50' launch program, which enabled satellite service delivery to regions including Canada, the UK, and Northern Europe, with full satellite fleet deployment targeted by 2022.
Exploring New Markets with High Bandwidth
Eric Sung, President and CEO of Intellian Technologies Inc., notes the significance of this development: "This agreement marks another exciting milestone in our great partnership with OneWeb, delivering another unique Intellian user terminal to address new markets and requirements with a high bandwidth and low latency user experience." The OW1 is Intellian's pioneering flat-panel antenna following substantial R&D investments, extending their OneWeb portfolio by empowering connectivity in remote environments with cost-effective and enhanced internet access. This terminal, alongside OneWeb’s LEO service, promises to foster business growth, facilitate education, and bolster critical service delivery globally.

The new device follows the successful completion of OneWeb’s ‘Five to 50’ launch program that has delivered the satellites required to bring OneWeb services to Canada, the UK and Northern Europe later this year. OneWeb is on track to deploy its full fleet of satellites by 2022.
New markets and requirements with a high bandwidth
"This agreement marks another exciting milestone in our great partnership with OneWeb, delivering another unique Intellian user terminal to address new markets and requirements with a high bandwidth and low latency user experience," says Eric Sung, President and CEO, Intellian Technologies Inc.
"The OW1 is our first flat-panel antenna, following years of investment in R&D, expanding our comprehensive OneWeb portfolio. This user terminal is a continuation of our ongoing mission of ‘Empowering Connectivity’, allowing customers in remote and challenging environments to access a cost-effective and enhanced user experience otherwise inaccessible to them. The OW1 from Intellian along with OneWeb’s LEO service, can enable business growth, empower education and support the delivery of critical services in communities on a global scale.”
